OT: Urban Meyer issues

Submitted by MGoCooper on

As all the Urban Meyer speculation came down today, I couldn't help but actually worry about his physical health.  To step down from a job as good as Florida, he had to have realized that   his health wasn't great. When it comes to problems with the heart, things really don't change that much in a year. I'm no expert, but having watched my Father work for years to improve his heart health, I have seen the work it takes.

The stress the SEC can put on a coach is terrible, that's a certainty. While tsio is not in the SEC, their fan base is equally as demanding, and a great deal more vicious in dealing with a loss. The pressure on him will be the same as it was in Florida, and the added pressure of the sanctions certainly will weigh heavily on him. While it certainly appears that he will eventually take the job, one has to wonder if it's the right decision for him. As a football fan who respects his body of work, I would like to see him take more time off to get his heart right. That has absolutely nothing to do with my fear as a Michigan fan, for him taking the job at tsio. Truth be told, I don't think it would be the match made in heaven most buckeye fans anticipate it being. That being said, I think it would be a disaster, and the toll it would take on Urban wouldn't be worth anything they could offer him.

Don't do it, Urban, it's not worth it.

Everyone and their mother in the college football rumor world has said Urban left because he was having an affair with a grad asst in the athletics department and his wife gave him an ultimatum to quit or get a divorce. Makes ALOT more sense than the "I'm sick and leaving, but wait, I'm coming back but then a year later I'm leaving again" dog and pony show we've been sold.

Um, don't you think that they would find a way to have the 23 year old grad assistant leave instead of the National Championship winning head coach?

Hell, it would not even have to be anything sinister.  Have some booster give her a dream job that is too good to refuse.

It makes no sense, actually.

That's not the only girl in the country that Meyer can bang. I doubt his wife demanded that he quit that job specifically to get away from ONE girl and her magical poon. I'm sure if UF knew this one affair would cost them Meyer, the girl would have been flown out of town with daily postcards to show Mrs. Meyer she was on the opposite side of the world.

The idea that he had to leave Florida because of it but is now free to go somewhere else is beyond ludicrous.

It was ridiculous! Meyer kept going on and on for the entire next drive after the interception on the screen about how it was unnacceptable to throw that many interceptions, and that if he was the coach he would bench Denard. Meanwhile, Denard was busy driving down the field for a touchdown. Give me a break! Denard played a great game, IMHO.

I think he was making a point that revealed his coaching style - and nothing more. You make a mistake while playing for him, you sit.

By playing Denard, Hoke was showing his style, which seems to be to say, "We believe in you. Keep going, you'll be fine." Positive reinforcement.

I know which coach I'd rather play for.

I think this is the way to approach it if Meyer is indeed hired.  Michigan now has an elite coaching staff and I am confident that sooner rather than later they will be able to play with anyone in the country (Alabama and LSU included).  Plus Meyer would at least make OSU good enough so that The Game would be back to getting great national attention.  This would make the B1G and Michigan stronger.

I am at a complete loss for why Urban would retire from coaching at Florida (where things were going pretty well recruiting and on the field) to take a job at Ohio only a year later, with NCAA sanctions looming. It makes zero sense.

Florida went 8-5 last year.  They just beat the mighty Furman Whateverthefuckthey'recalleds (in a game that was 37-32 going into the 4th quarter) to improve to 6-5 this year.  It is quite possible Meyer realized he wasn't going to have anywhere close to the team he had in the Leak/Tebow years any time in the near future.

And sanctions aside, now wouldn't be a bad time to take the OSU job (less pressure following crappy season, buffer between you and Tressel, and sanctions/scandal as an excuse for any short term troubles).

I don't think it is going to happen, but it isn't the craziest move in the world.

"It is quite possible Meyer realized he wasn't going to have anywhere close to the team he had in the Leak/Tebow years any time in the near future."

Hm, I wonder why he would think that? Acording to Rivals, Florida had the #12 class for 2011, #2 class for 2010, #11 for 2009, #3 for 2008 , and #1 for 2007. Surely there are some studs in those crops to field a good team.

I dont care about the man and have no concern about his health either way.  I also think that he is just a football coach, and that is all.  I have no fear of Meyer going to the buckeyes.

I only fear that he and Spewman are allowed to call The Game next week....that will be another horrible and unbearable experience if they are.

I think Meyer left because he was afraid that the competition would tarnish his legacy. He wasn't going to beat LSU or Alabama with Florida's current roster, especially with Miles and Saban playing dirty. I think he is overrated as a coach.

I don't think there is any way he takes the job, with the burden of having to follow Jim Tressell, and the threat of serious NCAA sanctions.  Penn State would be a more attractive option, it would seem to me.

What gets me is the timing of this: why in the world was tOSU conducting meetings with Meyer, with two big games left on the schedule, and no real threat that Meyer is going anywhere else until after the season?  The only thing that makes sense is that Penn State may have been doing the same.

[Edit: ESPN article suggests Penn State is starting a search... http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7256032/penn-state-ad-fo… ]

use the practices to start installing his offense, and we can probably beat whichever MAC team we face in the toilet bowl even with a brand new playbook.  Hell, using an actual playbook would be a big step forward from what OSU is doing now; Bollman uses his flippers to throw walrus dung at a 360 controller and calls whatever play results.

He is happy with his family and has not spoke to OSU. Maybe he is LYING. Perfect for ohlio. Go red and silver!

Actually, he revealed that "health problems" were esophageal spasms.  It's a stress related condition that causes intense chest pain, but is completely benign.  There is no risk to returning to coaching other than dealing with the annoyance of having them.

Is the coaching job really worth dying over? If he really is in bad health and he's ignoring his families wishes by coaching, he might as well start filling out the divorce papers. But, if the whole health issue was b.s. in order to move on in coaching, then this guy really has some mental issues. No matter which way you look at it, Urban looks like a huge douche unless he sticks with NOT coaching. Now that I think about it no matter what he does he still looks like a huge douche.

Meyer coached at OSU, is from Ohio and has his Master's Degree in Sports Admin from OSU.

But I agree that following Tressel, upcoming sanctions and scholarship losses and a far more disagreeable fanbase than he's ever encountered at BSGU, Utah and Florida, I can see Meyer taking a miss on the whole damn thing. They're paying him big bucks to be on ESPN right now too. No pressure.

Meyer would make a nice fit at Ohio. So would Mike Leach.
