I'm calling the Leafs to make the playoffs next year. Remind me if I'm wrong (but I won't be).
People dismissing Toronto's "prospects" forget that Matthews is a potential generational player (its why you go concensus #1), Marner is a phenom and the rest of their prospects have been marinating a couple years with the Marlies (Hunter doesn't like to bring up kids and run them early - although I expect Matthews up day 1).

The Wings aren't even close to the kind of iconic deal that the Leafs have going on. To put it in perspective, when you travel to Tampla and the Leafs are playing there are at least as many Leaf fans as Tampa fans, same in Arizona, Vancouver, Calgary etc. Hell, even Ottawa it's 1/3 Leaf fans. Their presence is exponentially bigger than the Wings (championships or not, sorry) and the tv deals that Bettman negotiated in Canada (gigantic over multiple networks) vs. the US (tiny and hardly relevant) illustrate that. Toronto has more than 20 000 people waiting just to get fleeced on season tickets (and believe me Toronto pricing is silly). Regardless of the quality of the team they sell out nightly. Compare that to the Wings where I got game day tickets (and good ones) easily three times last year or where they run ticket packs and deals.
Detroit has a good thing going in the US context but Canada and the GTA are entirely off the charts in terms of fan interest/intensity. It's not even and never will be close.
|11 hours 9 min ago||Do you watch hockey?||
That team is not several years away from playoff contention. That's delusional.
Two years ago Mike Babcock is a great coach not going anywhere and now he's years away from playoff contention? Now players don't want to play for him? Wings colored glasses.
Leafs just picked up a solid goaltender, Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Kapanen are all tier one prospects (three of them will be in the league next year). Every opportunity to make the playoffs next year.
Book it. (Remind me next year if this does not come to fruition...except it will).
|11 hours 15 min ago||I could write an opinion on the "why"||
But basically Harold Ballard followed by a bunch of lackey owners (Steve Stavros I'm looking at you) then corporate ownership and finally they more or less seem to have lucked into Shanahan (who I'm not really cool with), Lamoriello (who is proven) and Hunter/Kyle Dubas (solid).
|11 hours 18 min ago||Your logic is classic||
Please adjust your Wings colored glasses.
|11 hours 46 min ago||Anything is possible but Detroit an unlikely destination.||
Bottom line he's looking at millions in endorsements in Toronto. Detroit cannot come anywhere close to that secondary income.
A second point that would not make sense to Wings fans. If a player or coach were to come to the Leafs and win a cup they'd name public schools after them. It's that relevant in Canada.
Stamkos, aside from the money and endorsements, surely knows this.
(As an aside, I see him going FA after kicking the tires then re-signing in Tampa if he doesn't go to Toronto)
|11 hours 50 min ago||Key player in that front office||
If you follow Junior hockey at all in Canada you know his capacity in assessing talent among the juniors and bringing them to London. At a talent evaluation level, Hunter is legit (a quick look at London Knights draft picks since he's owned that team is pretty compelling). This should translate to the next level.
Lamoriello is the real deal and has the rings to prove it. Shanahan, to me, is actually more of the wild card in that whole mix. Where Hunter is proven in Juniors and Lamoriello is proven in the league Shanahan was just a very solid player (not much of a character guy according to Craig Janney...)
|12 hours 40 min ago||Nice.||
Do you really think it's static with Shanahan/Lamoriello/Hunter running the deal going forward?
It's not unlike the scenario when Michigan got Hackett (and made Brandon leave, for which, as a season ticket holder I am eternally grateful). Competence replaced incompetence.
You do win for effective smart remark. So well played on that.
|12 hours 47 min ago||So salty. But he's still not going to Detroit.||
My name is clarkiefromcanada
I am sorry I don't have your Detroit myopia when it comes to Stamkos or all things hockey. I just don't see it happening. Family is from Toronto, Leafs can figure it cap wise, he's a fit with Matthews coming in and the endorsement money in Toronto would far exceed anything he could make in any other market. Connect the dots.
It's not difficult to see him in Toronto if (and this is a big if even he goes FA) he just doesn't just ultimately renew for a boatload of money in Tampa.
Remember when your former coach wasn't ever going to Toronto either? I read a year of posts about that. Of course, your team is way better with the new guy, right?
This Shanahan/Lamoriello/Hunter regime is not the old Leafs and I would not discount them.

I just stopped laughing about the Stamkos concept to Detroit.
That's not happening.
|2 days 2 hours ago||A reasonable narrative||
People tend to forget that Dantonio also lucked into the RichRod/Hoke eras at Michigan. I'll be interested to see how things look after a decade of Harbaugh re: in-state recruiting, B1G etc.
|2 days 11 hours ago||Well...||
His Michigan teams have scored as many points in College Football Playoff games as Dantonio's so it's kind of a wash.
|5 days 11 hours ago||Agreed.||
In the same way that Philly is a pro sports town Cleveland is a pro sports town. Nobody I know in Cleveland likes anything about Columbus sports (though they generally support tOSU because it's the only game in town).
|5 days 11 hours ago||Three words||
Hand Check Era
|5 days 12 hours ago||I will say this...||
Amazingly (shockingly) I think Kerr was outcoached by T. Lue in the last few minutes. I don't know what alternative universe allowed this to happen. Kerr twice didn't call timeouts to set plays when he had the chance in the last minute and a half. Cost him.
Don't know what's going on with Stephen Curry but he was legit bricking shots tonight. It seemed as if the pressure may have been too great (wife tweeting, two losses heading home etc). Klay Thompson scored but seemed invisible.
Golden State minus Bogut is a different team. A way more beatable team. Cleveland controlled the paint in the last three games and this is what matters in playoff basketball, it seems. Lue's use of post concussion Love made sense on the road in this application (despite my initial freak out).
LeBron James is plainly the best player in the NBA at present. It's not particularly close, either. Stephen Curry folded in the most pressure filled moments (3 point 4th quarter).
Golden State was a great regular season team and a front runner. Bogut, it seems, meant a lot more than anyone in SF thought. Green, despite his bravado, was not the difference. Kyrie Irving is the real deal.
Those are my thoughts.
|5 days 12 hours ago||Come on kid.||
We are all maize and blue fans here. Stop by the tailgate and I'd offer you a beer.
That said, don't write content that is whiny and I'll stop commenting factually upon it.
|5 days 13 hours ago||This.||
Totally different deal.
|5 days 13 hours ago||I don't think you get it.||
I'm a 35 year CLE fan and have spent a lot of time at Browns games, Cavs etc. (grew up getting their signals on antenna across the lake). CLE fans probably do support Ohio State but Cleveland is not, generally, a college town. Also, Cleveland is not Columbus and their fans see themselves as different.
A Cleveland championship (Cavs/Tribe/Browns) is the deal for Cleveland fans not tOSU. The ones I know are generally happy when tOSU wins but it's not like Browns/Cavs/Tribe. Not at all.
|5 days 13 hours ago||Means nothing.||
Nothing when you don't win the title. So no, I don't respect them at all. The most epic choke job of all time.
BTW, I am a 35 year suffering CLE fan so you can ease up on the bandwagon fella.
Your analysis reads sour. Srsly...the refs? Come on.
It's funny being called a troll by the noobs tho. Thx.
|5 days 13 hours ago||Um....||
Ohio State is in Columbus, OH.
|5 days 13 hours ago||"Not sour"...Sure.||
Your team, the alleged greatest of all time, 73 wins, up 3-1 just demonstrated the greatest choke of all time. People wouldn't resent GSW if they weren't a) the darlings of the NBA...I mean, listen to the commentary every game...brutal; b) silly whiners (take away Curry's wife's twitter or your ref analysis).
Curry scored 3 points in the 4th quarter. Paper MVP.
|5 days 13 hours ago||Well...||
I'm sure it was an NBA conspiracy...right?
|5 days 13 hours ago||Not even close to the greatest||
Any 90's Championship Bulls team would have crushed them.
Any pre-hand check championship team, similarly.
|5 days 14 hours ago||I am so happy.||
I hate Ohio State but grew up watching the Cavs over the lake.
Nice legacy for the 73 win warriors...
|1 week 1 day ago||Just wow.||
They were facing elimination against a team that had just beaten them (soundly) at home. If anything, GSW were playing with the cushion of a two game lead.
Then they lost Bogut (who is arguably far more important inside than Green to their success) and James can go to the rim at will while Thompson looks like an all-star.
A depleted GSW, minus Bogut, with half Iguodala, and a petulant Curry tap out in game 7.
|1 week 1 day ago||Tells you something about the NBA in the Post Hand Check Era||
...when your reigning MVP is "just a shooter"
|1 week 1 day ago||Klay Thompson leaves early...||
...Lebron et al pretty deep in Golden State's heads now
That collar has to be very tight now in Golden State
|1 week 1 day ago||You salty?||
Just a little?
|1 week 1 day ago||Yep.||
When compelled to play defense Curry struggles overall.
He's a front runner, it seems.
