Xavier beats No. 1 'Nova

So No. 5 Xavier just beat No. 1 Villanova. This only helps Michigan: we lost to a team that is now gunning for a number 1 seed in the NCAA tourney. I realize that Michigan could have had a "harder" non-conference schedule, but cumong . . . if you are playing a number one seed in the non-conference part of the season, that's pretty significant.

Where this helps is in selection Sunday. When the committee is looking at teams on the bubble, everyone they played makes a difference. Personally, I think Michigan is in the tourney with one win in the Big 10 tournament. But yeah, I think this helps at least a sliver.

I disagree. Xavier was #6 in the RPI prior to tonight. A win moves them up but the overall impact on Michigan's non conference SOS (#176) will be minimal. Basically swap out a loss to the #6 team for a loss to the #2/#3 team. Michigan's record against the RPI top 50 remains the same (3-8).

I keep seeing that 3-8 stat. Almost think it would be better if two or three of our losses fell below 50. That seems counter intuitive. But then I could say: Look! Now we're 3-4 against the top 50! Obviously tourney team!

Yeah but that would mean we would have 4 losses against RPI 51-100 teams which looks worse on your resume

Maybe if we played them close it would matter, but at the surface we're just another team that got rolled by Xavier. You don't get brownie points for losing big to good teams

Yep, that was Yuge. For them, at least. But I don't see Wisconsin and Michigan as an either/or for the NCAA tourney. I think it will be both/and. We will have a minimum of 21 wins. And I don't think that Iowa is unwinnable.

Keep in mind that the selection committee doesn't have an allotted number of bids per conference, or anything like that. If Michigan and Wisconsin both have tournament-worthy résumés, both will get in.

You know, I didn't even get the chance to take VIllanova a weekend too far in a bracket yet and here they are losing to Xavier (it could have been anyone really) at the end of the regular season now. Perhaps that is their signal that they are ready to assume their normal position as the slightly overrated high seed in whichever bracket they fall into on Selection Sunday.
