Where Do YOU Stand On... (your personal rating of Harbaugh, Howard, Manuel, etc.)

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on January 13th, 2023 at 8:46 AM

This seems like a terrible idea, but I'm going to try it anyway.

You can consider this sort of like "confidence ratings."

1-5 scale.

  • 1 = 0% confidence. Fire now.
  • 2 = Down on (this person). Not looking good, would gladly upgrade (provide names who would be an upgrade if you can).
  • 3 = Indifferent. There are positives, there are negatives.
  • 4 = Plenty of confidence in this person, glad they are a WOLVERINE!
  • 5 = 2005/2015 Carol Hutchins, 2017 John Beilein, or Dec. 28, 2014 Jim Hackett levels of confidence and job security.

...use decimals if you want...

Where do YOU stand on...

  1. Jim Harbaugh
  2. Juwan Howard
  3. Kim Barnes Airco
  4. Brandon Naurato
  5. Tracy Smith
  6. Warde Manuel
  7. Santa Ono
  8. Kevin Warren
  9. The coordinating abilities of Matt Weiss/Sherrone Moore/Jesse Minter/Steve Clinkscale (together)
  10. "The Current State of College Football"

When I was a kid growing up in Michigan, I used to get so confused when movies and TV shows would refer to it as the "DMV". I would think, "Why do they keep calling it 'DMV'? It's the Secretary of State." It wasn't until later that I realized that most states call it the DMV and that Michigan is the outlier.

Then, when I moved to California and mentioned to a friend that in Michigan, the DMV is called the Secretary of State, she said, "Why do you guys call it that? You got Condi Rice standing at the door handing out driver's licenses?"

What recent athletic issues? By all accounts the Athletic Department is in excellent shape. We are about to sign our Head Football Coach to a deal that makes him the highest paid coach in the conference in addition to having a buyout that protects the University's best interest.

Hey Warde, get off MGoBlog and go work on Jim's contract. I guess you're not busy since Santa had to step in and take care of it for you.

The contract could've been done before the CFP and never had to entertain the NFL rumors, apparently not wanting to give Harbaugh the $ he needs to keep his assistants, hockey currently has an interim coach because of the mismanagement of the Pearson report, lost our baseball coach, NIL is happening in spite of the AD not collaborating with it, how much better would the basketball team be with Terrence Shannon on it if Warde had been fighting the admin to change transfer rules...

How could it be done before when Jim won't discuss contract until the season is over?? It has been his practice forever.

How do you know Warde didn't fight for Shannon?

Baseball Coach?? HAHAHA he went to Clemson. I always chuckle in this state when it comes to baseball.

Agree on Pearson but Warde wanted to keep him and by all signs fought to keep him.

Michigan fans always need someone to blame other than the person they put on a high horse. Jim is as much to blame as anyone else right now.

Harbaugh didn't go seek out interviews on a whim. He did it because he was unhappy with how contract negotiations were going. Warde's trying to double down on low balling the coach who just had back to back playoff appearances and flipped the script on OSU. As if the Athletic Department doesn't have more money than God.

Agree on Pearson but Warde wanted to keep him and by all signs fought to keep him.

Lmao that's the problem. Pearson should've been fired months before he was (the report came out in May or early June), giving the university time to conduct a national coaching search. Instead Warde stuck by a guy who was absolutely fired for cause, publicly had a stand off with the president, and we had to panic hire an interim. It was handled literally as poorly as you could possibly handle it.

Why did Warde do this? Because he isn't good at his job.

I won't get into all the Bo stuff since Harbs and the rest of the university writ large are equally as culpable, but that's not great either.

This is a stupid take. Warde has presented a great contract with tons of money to Harbaugh Warde is doing what’s right for the university and trying to get some assurance he won’t leave which is a wise move   Harbaugh is the one who wants the ability to leave and is holding things up. Ono has come in I believe as a mediator to see if he can bridge the gap. Hey Jim show you want to be here and sign the very lucrative contract and stop holding the program hostage

So if this is true -- that Harbaugh wants the ability to leave when the urge strikes -- why would people complain about it after days of posts where people said Harbaugh needs to shit or get off the pot, and we can't do this year after year? People are giving Warde grief for wanting a contract that makes it harder for Harbaugh to do this year after year? I truly don't get it.

Completely understand your point...

My reason is that a LOT of smoke is blowing one way from insiders and reporters that have had legit access to the program for years.  And on the other side, we have the 'Warde does things in the background' camp.  There's a preponderance of evidence that I'm choosing to believe.  Sort of like a trial by jury.

We all wish there was more to go on...

You’re wrong.  Plain and simple. A contract was pretty much agreed to verbally right after OSU.  Then Warde found out about level 1 and tried to use it as leverage against harbaugh like he used the COVID year in getting the decrease betore.  Unfortunately for Warde the leverage was w Harbaugh as his stock has never been higher. He took this personally and was upset warde was fighting ncaa.   Harbaugh went directly to ono himself to get backing against ncaa.  That’s how Ono got involved.

Ward f’d up. And instead of saying “ sorry Jim I screwed up “ he doubled down.

6. 5 - who cares about administrators, really.

"Not caring about administrators" is how you end up with Dave Brandon. Plus, you should absolutely care about who the AD is. The AD is primarily responsible for allocating resources and hiring/firing. There's no single person more responsible for the success of ALL sports at the university than the AD.

Chuck,

I get what you are saying, and wholeheartedly disagree. Are you saying we should focus on the Director's cup? If so, Michigan hasn't done poorly historically. My disagreement is based on that standard.  I'm not here to cheer on Stanford.

Poor admin work makes for painful post-mortems. If that is your point. I take back this post.

I mean... I'm not stupid. I care WAY more about football and a few other sports than I do, say, the swimming team. As do most people on this board and most alums generally. But that doesn't mean I don't want the other sports to succeed. Having good sports is a point of pride, and pride feels good. Just like it feels good knowing that UM has a world class engineering school despite the fact that I was not an engineer.

Michigan should be able to credibly say they are trying their damndest to compete for national titles in basically every sport. They have the money for it. Certain sports (looking at you, baseball) I understand that we are at a geographic disadvantage, but Bakich proved it's possible to truly compete every couple years when the stars and talent align right. But something like volleyball or field hockey or soccer? There's no reason Michigan shouldn't have the best facilities, the highest paid coaches, all the resources in the world. We're the leaders and best, let's fucking act like it.

And to say the AD doesn't affect the revenue sports is laughable. I don't know if Harbaugh comes in 2011 under any circumstances, but I know there's a damn better chance that he comes without Dave Brandon here.

5s! ALL OF EM!! No I think we have a great staff across the board for the most part. I think what would make it better is everyone getting on the same page.

Jim Harbaugh - 4 - I would be a 5 if it wasn’t for the constant NFL flirtation / contract status likely taking a bite out of recruiting and momentum

Juwan Howard - this one hurts me to say bc I love Juwan, but 2  Nothinf about the team looks right; effort, fundamentals, player development, team chemistry, recruiting, etc is all trending negative

Warde Manuel - 3 - Nothing about the way that he has handled his role as athletic Director stands out as impressive. We are behind the curve on NIL, he isn’t handling the Harbaugh situation well and he just doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence.  But, at the same time, he hasn’t committed any egregious missteps and the whole nil  thing could be more of an issue with the former president and our board.

Santa Ono - can I give him a 10?  This guy is amazing, gets it, and is exactly the type of president we need from a sports perspective

Kevin Warren - 4 - I get some of the criticisms, but his job is to lead the conference and to churn out a shit ton of money for its members. By all accounts, he is doing that. While I personally don’t like the direction of mega conferences, locking down one of the premier programs in the country in US C will be viewed as a great move once all is said and done.

The coordinating abilities of Matt Weiss/Sherrone Moore/Jesse Minter/Steve Clinkscale (together) - 4 - I know that the last game left a bit of a negative taste in our mouth, but over the course of the entire season, other than the Illinois game in which we lost our star running back and we’re obviously playing to avoid injuries, we won every single game, including Ohio State, easily. The adjustments throughout the season, while not always flashy, have actually been very impressive.

"The Current State of College Football" - 3 - I only choose three as my answer because it is the average of one and five. On the one hand, college football gets a five because it is the most exciting, engaging sport. There are some great players, coaches, conference races and rivalries that make college football unlike anything else. At the same time, there are aspects that deserve a one because they are just so obviously messed up; N I L, the mass that the portal has become, teams playing by different rules, obvious referee bias and the useless NCAA.

I agree with your Juwan take. He was my favorite of the Fab Five. Would like to see him succeed anywhere.

Things do seem to be trending down, I suspect he's not going to work out here. But he's also new to head coaching, people do get better with experience, I wouldn't be surprised if he's much better coach five years from now than he is now. Hopefully Warde has better ability to project Juwan's long-term performance than I do.

Personally I think Juwan should be given next season to show improvement, otherwise I would be in favor of getting a new coach.

Juwan IS "a new coach". LOL A new coach who's won the B1G title in his first 3 years and never done worse than the Sweet16 in the tourney. A coach who lost his best player at the start of the tourney yet was an insane performance by ole boy at ucla from the final four anyway. A new coach who's gotten us to #1 ranking and a #1 seed in tourney for the first time since HE was on the team in 93.  LOL Coach Howard's been named conference COY and national COY already. Just for comparison sake, we didn't even make the tourney 3 of the first 4 years under our last coach. We've had the best recruiting classes in the country since he's been here.

We lost 5 starters from last year's team and had our starting pg injured in London yet beat the crap out of Maryland and played Iowa well enough to win without some insanely bad phantom fouls. And some want him fired?  Wow, just wow!

Finally, a forum for me to air my views on these matters.

1. Great but being a bit of a wanker atm. Hope he stays and accepts a giant buyout with lots of NIL thrown in

2. Need more data

3. #1 in my heart

4. Who the hell knows, let’s see how it goes

5. Embodiment of excellence, but why is my daughter’s second grade class parent on this list?

6. Fire him, but not just yet

7. Not a single criticism

8. Seemed fine doing the most important stuff ($$$), bye

9. Very good, but I’d like to try it without Weiss, just to see

10. I haven’t read it in a couple years

  1. Jim Harbaugh - 4.5 (recruiting and NFL flirtations only thing stopping a 5)
  2. Juwan Howard - 3 (covid season looking more and more like an outlier)
  3. Kim Barnes Airco - 5 (WBB seems fine, don't really pay attention to this)
  4. Brandon Naurato - 4 (seems good)
  5. Tracy Smith - 3 (0 games coached here, placeholder ranking for a tier 3 sport coach)
  6. Warde Manuel - 0 (fire him yesterday)
  7. Santa Ono - 5 (that dude)
  8. Kevin Warren - 3(I don't like what he did to college football, but he did his job very well per the job description)
  9. The coordinating abilities of Matt Weiss/Sherrone Moore/Jesse Minter/Steve Clinkscale (together) - 3.8 (would have been a 4.5 before the Fiesta Bowl meltdown)
  10. "The Current State of College Football" - 1 (This shit sucks)
