What are our MBB portal needs this offseason?
Granted our insane admissions and poor NIL for now, what do you think we need most this offseason?
- I think we need a 7'0+ center for height depth to backup Reed.
- A tall point guard who brings good defense.
- Another 3pt sniper (similar to Duncan Robinson).
I think we also need a new coach, too.
A new AD and a new head coach.
Although it has been said many times, many ways, this comment is enough. The rest will take care of itself.
Exactly. To draw parallel's to a company/corporation - when you have ineptitude at the top, you could have the best employees in the world and eventually the company will fail.
Although it has been said many times, many ways,
that would be Merry Christmas, to me.
eh, not too worried about the portal. This shit works, after all
Can we get a Strength and Conditioning Coach from the portal?
Pretty sure our "portal needs" are unobtainable. It's clear there is going to be a rebuilding process that will, hopefully, be aided by a new coach. The good news is that rebuilding in MBB can happen relatively quickly. But, thinking the portal is going to solve these problems in irrational.
Many teams have gotten the right players using the portal. We potentially could've had Caleb Love and Terrence Shannon Jr. on this squad, maybe could've been a whole different outcome this year.
"You're Welcome" to Hubert & Brad

Plus, if you add those 2 guys, does Hunter Dickinson stay?
Given what I have seen from HC probably a squad even with those two guys is a bubble team at best.
Honestly, not sure how much difference Shannon and Love would make. Maybe 3-5 more wins. Crappy D is coaching not players.
The players I would like to see back are Will Tschetter, Reed, Washington, and sort of Dug The rest will need to be freshman or transfers.
Agreed
I’m the exact opposite. Dug is a must and the rest can be replaced.
I'd be surprised to see Dug stay and have to play school next year.
I don’t disagree but it’s wild to me how Michigan basketball fans think getting rid of the best player will somehow lead to something better. Huge risk
Best available player at all positions including coach.
Head coach, 2 assistant coaches, about 9 players, strength coach
You’re gonna to need a bigger portal
Love that scene. It was both frightening and funny as hell, and it was the perfect visual set-up for the "bigger boat" line that followed. This was a great direction by a guy who really knew what he was doing.
Whereas the basketball team ...
This is the correct answer, as I assume the players good enough to transfer out will do so. It's going to be almost a completely new roster next year.
A starting lineup?
Pretty sure we need a started for every position and depth, as well. Good shooters, lock down defenders, PGs - all areas of need
I'm also not sold that Reed will ever been worth of starter minutes at C. Way too foul prone (and not even good fouls - stupid fouls 30 ft from the basket), terrible hands, etc
With some actual coaching, Reed can be a B10 caliber starter.
Caitlin Clark
I believe she already declared for the Draft.
I can't stand her antics but honestly, I feel like she would start for this team. She's slow by men's standards and would be a defensive liability. . . but the team is already a collective defensive liability and as-is she'd be the best pure shooter on the team.
She wouldn't even make the roster over the walk-ons. While she is an incredibly skilled player, athletically should would cooked on every defensive possession and would never get a shot up on offense with a remote chance of going in. We can just appreciate her skillset for what it is without saying she could hang on a D1 mens court which she would never be able to do.
I graduated with a McDonald's All-American who went and started at Tennessee and in the WNBA. She could shoot threes and FTs at a better clip than anyone on my (boys) team. That included drills, not just standing and shooting. But she played with us in summer open gyms, and she couldn't get a shot off unless it was on a break or a long offensive rebound or something. The difference in athleticism was just too much.
That said, she did bench 135, which was impressive. The boys tennis team lifted in the same time/session as the basketball teams, and none of the boys tennis players could bench 135. It was a fun day in the weight room.
That boy's tennis team was worthless and weak. I was out there pressing the entire universal rack--265 lb--in high school, and I was a baseball player.
You just made the argument for why transgender athletes shouldn't be allowed to play on women's teams. Genetically, they are men.
Such a great comment in SO many ways.
I am sure this thread is going to spiral down. But taking your question on:
Starting 3, and depth at the 2/3 and 4/5, which is pretty close to what you are saying.
And somewhere, somehow, they need some leadership.
The assumes:
nobody additional leaves. (big assumption, I am sure)
Recruited freshmen can contribute.
Rooths definitely will contribute
I'd be really surprised if Rooths plays at Michigan.
Aside, *great* avatar name.
1. Tall 7'0"+ point guard who brings good defense and is a 3pt sniper.
2. Tall 7'0"+ shooting guard who brings good defense and is a 3pt sniper.
3. Tall 7'0"+ small forward who brings good defense and is a 3pt sniper.
4. Tall 7'0"+ power forward who brings good defense and is a 3pt sniper.
5. Tall 7'0"+ center who brings good defense and is a 3pt sniper.
Is that you, Leonard Hamilton?
Coach
Someone who can pass/catch/ and rebound..........
or maybe a coach that can teach these things
I think we need that 7’0+ center to be the starter. I don’t think Reed is ever gonna be a quality starter level player.
I agree. He would be a great backup
I heard about this player that the League was interested in at a recent draft. Perhaps he has a younger brother or tw.o - and, some cousins who possess his skill set. And, if so, bring them all in at various positions on the floor. That player - Victor Wembanyama.
Are "team core fundamentals" available in the Portal? If so - perhaps we could arrange for a set of twelve (12) "core fundamentals" - that the '24-'25 team can take advantage of.
4 more additional high school recruits.
If ever a coach/program needed a 6 person class this is it. We are short several scholarships if no eligible players leave, and they are leaving.
Agree here. They can't keep going with stopgaps. They need to find players who want to be here for a while. If I were coaching Michigan, I would prioritize signing at least 1-2 in state guys per year. Like why is this guy committed to Rutgers without any interest from Michigan. We regularly have multiple unfilled scholarships. Take a chance on a local guy. I don't know the details on any of these guys below, but they are all from the 22 and 23 class from the state of Michigan and UM is not on their interest list at all. I don't get why you wouldn't try to grab a couple of these guys.
- Curtis Williams. Averaging 18 minutes a game at Louisville. Michigan nowhere on his recruitment timeline.
- Sonny Wilson. 28 minutes, 8.5 ppg at Toledo
- John Blackwell. 17 minutes, 7.9 ppg at Wisconsin. 6'4" 185 combo guard
- Chuck Bailey III. 18 minutes 8.6 ppg at Evansville. 6'5 185 combo guard. Dad played at Michigan
- JaVaughn Hannah. 28 minutes, 9.2 ppg at Western Michigan.
Great points, I've always wondered this also. PSU with good football players from our state is very hard to watch. Same applies to basketball, every year some guy from Michigan is killin it in March Madness for some smaller school...or at least it seems.
Probably because he's a 6'7" PF, and only a three star at that.
A top notch starting five and 2-3 additional high quality players would be a good start.
