What am I missing about tonight's game?

Submitted by ldevon1 on October 9th, 2021 at 9:39 AM

I have no angst about the game tonight. Should I? People are in love with Nebraska because they almost beat Sparty, and Oklahoma. Both of those teams have terrible O lines. OK, maybe MSU's isn't terrible, but it's not as good as ours. Both of those teams have average to below average defenses. Ours is better. I just don't understand the National media pushing the "Scott Frost is about to get his signature win" narrative. I guess we will find out soon enough. Go Blue!

Eh, road night game against a team that has played some close games against decent to good teams and some still aren't sold on Michigan.

It's time to get arrogant! Get in some people's faces about how much better we are! Trust me! It definitely won't blow up in our faces!

Nebraska has played well for stretches but has also made some dumb mistakes. If they put it all together they could be very dangerous. Honestly, you could say the same thing about most college teams.

I guess what gives me pause, is that Michigan has a history of dropping a game they shouldn’t. Let’s be honest, playing on the road at night in front of a hostile crowd is going to be tough. I’m basing this game more as the barometer of how the rest of the season will go.

The exact same post I was going to put up but I was going back 20yrs. Anyone who doesn’t have ptsd from Michigan football obviously doesn’t watch every Saturday. I still have the widow maker floating around somewhere from being at App State. I was in my early 30’s and channeled my inner Fred G Sanford that day.

I've been concerned all week. Talk about the Wisconsin win went well into the week before anyone seemed to think about the next game. I've been cautious since 1978 when I felt comfortable going into the MSU game in Ann Arbor. I turned on the radio late, and we were getting crushed. I was shocked!  A 17-0 halftime deficit resulted in a 24-15 loss. I haven't seen Nebraska play this year, but I just have a bad feeling I can't shake.

I think it's because Nebraska should have beaten MSU, they seem to have improved quite a bit since their early games, and MSU looks like a team we should also be afraid of, especially on the road, b/c we've historically been bad on the road.

Throw a little last two decades of marrow-level BPONE and ipso facto presto change-o you've got a recipe for nerves and not quite believing that we're a good team until we blow up MSU or Penn State :)

It's basically because on a per play basis, Nebraska should be 4-1 with a close loss to Oklahoma.  And per play metrics are historically more predictive than full game outcomes.

I think it'll be close but Nebraska's putrid special teams are the difference.

It's a road game at night against a team that has improved since their admittedly horrible loss to Illinois in the opener. It's something of a trap game for Michigan, coming off of their first road win in a long time in Madison

Also, do you remember the last time we played a night game on the road against Nebraska? I do. The backup quarterback situation is a lot better now, though, but weird shit can happen on the road.

Nebraska fans are confident, which I think can influence larger narratives. Last weekend had everything they might want to warm the cockles of their heart: Big performances by walkons, a Big 8 style blowout against a team that has been achieving things they’d want, the triple option. They see the game as a culmination of improved performances ultimately leading to the first big win of the Frost era. They even started a supersized version of the Jump Around with fireworks and a light show set to Thunderstruck.

none of that actually matters. It’s going to be a tough game. I think we’re prepared for that.

After the debacle versus Illinois, Nebraska is a much improved team.

A night game on the road is always going to be a challenge...Nebraska is no different.

One of the biggest changes this year, is preparation and lack of self inflicted errors. Nebraska, if they cleaned those up, could easily have 1 or 2 more wins on their resume and are much better than the 3-3 record says they are.

We'll see, but I think this will be a close one score game, but hopefully its a Michigan blowout.

Let's be real here - if we lose tonight it's more a comment of where Michigan is at than what Nebraska is.

There's a large contingent of people who think Michigan's top 10 ranking is a 'fraud' or 'smokes and mirrors'. A lot of them are Michigan fans even. So if you're nervous about tonight it's probably because deep in your heart you fear the "This is just another overrated Michigan team" crowd has been right all along.

Always comes down to a few big plays especially against a good defense. Last week Michigan players Made Plays. Can they do that this week on the road in a raucous night game environment?

We’ve had our share of issues at Kinnick when we’ve gone there hopefully we don’t start a tradition at Lincoln unless it’s positive of course.

I join those that expect a tough game tonight.  That said, this team plays hard.   Nice things await Michigan and Michigan fans.  Any conference win without injuries qualifies as a nice thing.

I hear you. I was more concerned heading into the Rutgers game. I think Schiano is building something there. This game isn't a slam dunk, but I think Michigan would have to have a letdown for Nebraska to win.

Any time we play a mobile quarterback I am nervous.  It goes back to watching Donovan McNabb run rampant on us, then Dennis Dixon, etc.

I get double nervous for night games on the road.   Also the FFFF has me feeling pretty nervous.

Michigan doesn't historically have the best results against talented running QBs. They actually practice #SpeedInSpace and can lock your defensive group on the field. They shoot themselves in the feet a lot, but that kind of thing has a habit of disappearing when teams play Michigan. Night game in Lincoln. Missing 2 of our top 3 receivers.

Still think we're going to overtake their ass.

Nebraska is a sneaky good team. I've watched them get better each week.

However. their special teams are beyond Keystone Kops, so that should be enough to eke out a win.

Nebraska has one of the most passionate fan bases in the country. Tonight's environment will not be easy to play in.  The only reason Nebraska is 3-3 right now is because of self-inflicted wounds.  They could just as easily be undefeated or a 1 loss team right now with possible road wins against MSU and Oklahoma. However, this game is not on the road, and they are undefeated at home.

Night game on the road. Opponent that is much better than their record shows. Offensive style we haven’t really faced and which may play to our weaknesses rather than strengths. Loss of our emerging WR1 just after he starts to gel with our QB. And that feeling that Michigan could have an emotional letdown after the big win in Madison.

All of this is reason for concern. I’m not saying I think we will lose - I’m more on the fence about tonight’s game, tbh. Just saying, the reasons why people pick Nebraska to win do make sense. I can’t shake the feeling that it’s a bad situation for us. But then again, that’s what I thought last week too.

I think because Nebraska weaknesses are high variance - TOs, special teams, etc.   The defense is good and the offense has explosive potential.   This game was handicapped at a field goal which seems about right.

Here is an interesting fact - both teams have a higher yds/play than every opponent they’ve faced.  One is 5-0 and the other is 3-3.   The dangerous teams that upset other teams are usually this type of set up.
