Weis not recruiting anymore = gone

Submitted by myrtlebeachmai… on
Per ESPN Insider article (duh, did not cut/paste whole article...) "ESPN's Joe Schad just twittered that Weis is not hitting the recruiting trail after this week's game at Stanford." FWIW I think we know the writing's on the wall... any undecided ND recruits coming down to the wire that this might affect?

If Charlie loved ND as much as he claimed, he would recruit to the whistle. I don't think anyone's going to argue that Weis has a fraction of the class and integrity that Lloyd does. But the situations are also very different - Lloyd left on his own terms, while CFB is getting shitcanned.

sense, if it's the AD's call. If you've already made the decision you're not bringing him back, and he (CW knows it), then what good does he do you on the recruiting trail? What can he tell a recruit? "We think you'd be great used this way ... your skills fit this position in this scheme ..." Sure he can talk all the generic stuff about what a great institution ND is, about the tradition and facilities and so forth, but can't really about most football related things-- the direction of the team, what kind of system the kid will be playing in, the staff, S&C program, etc. because it sounds like it's all going to change.

Completely different situation. He probably has been told he's gone, but not the exact time of the announcement. If you care about your school, you don't plan recruiting trips and then have to call and cancel because you just got fired. Carr knew the approximate timeline of the hiring process and could continue to recruit as he was still the official head coach until the capital one bowl. It's apples and oranges.

Lloyd had been at Michigan for decades and planned to continue his affiliation with the school. CW is being canned after 3 years and will be seeking new employment elsewhere. Why would he ever consider recruiting, especially when everyone in the world knows he is a lame (tur)duck(en)? Recruits wouldn't take him seriously anyway.

So my question is who do they have to recruit now if not the head coach because if they are letting him go then how do they know which of the position coaches, OC, or DC will be retained? This seems as though it is gonna be a huge mess for them if they don't do something and do it fast.

a new coach in place ASAP. You make a good point about kids being in limbo until something is announced. Still, at this point they have more time before signing day than Michigan did before they hired Coach Rodriguez. It turned out okay for Michigan even with the late hire with RR (a couple Carr recruits bailed, but most stayed with the class). One situation doesn't = the other, obviously, but I suspect it may even be easier for ND to keep most of its class intact in that classes seem to be filling up even quicker today than just two years ago. I don't know the numbers, but anecdotally it seems like there aren't a ton of open slots at many top brand schools right now--meaning, most ND recruits not of the 5 and high 4 star caliber may find themselves with fewer options than they might imagine if they want to bail.

after "standing" for the three hours of the Stanford game to do any recruiting. That staircase is daunting enough.

Even Weis is smart enough to know that he is definitely getting fired. I think the only question now is which buffet franchise he buys with his settlement: Golden Corral or Stacey's.

Last weekend on the College Football Roundup Lou Holtz actually said he would much rather play for Charlie and N.D. because he has a long contract and they have a solid team. He if he was a recruit he would not even look at Michigan with all the problems with Rich Rod. If there was ever a shill for ND Lou is it. Lou also says that no one will be leaving early. Yeah right. Charlie Weis will be like a fullback. When he is out everyone will be out behind him.

are exactly why Rich Rod needs to be left alone. ND is going to be in kind of a state of turmoil for a little bit and it does effect recruiting a lot. If Rich Rod got fired (especially with him changing the offensive system the way he has) and we hired someone that runs a traditional pro style offense it would set us back about 4 years. Rich just needs some time and we will be great again. Only this time I think we have the potential to contend for the naitonal title year in and year out and not just the Big Ten. Go Rich Rod and Go Blue!

Here is possibly some more to the story: RT @BFeldmanESPN: Does the recent sale of the South Bend home the Clausens owned as the Chic. Trib reported a tip that Jimmy Clausen is jumping to the NFL? He may be hurting the next coach bad if Clausen is leaving and he's not recruiting. Floyd and Tate will probably take off if Clausen does. Nothing that people weren't already thinking, but this makes it closer to reality.

Is there a limit to the number of visits a head coach can make to recruits? And if so, wouldn't having the outgoing HC take those visits limit the ability of the incoming HC to keep the recruits in the fold?

thats a good question, the recruiting calendar varies by the week and some times the day with regard to what coaches can contact recruits. I would think the NCAA would have some type of exemption in there for coaching change situations but it is the NCAA so it might be the exact opposite
