Who knows how many current players' pockets he's in with freebies. Now those who host visits have a place to "show recruits a good time" and continue to take him up on it. Hence, he has access to players, recruits for photos, twitter, etc. It's not out of the realm of possibility that a recruit or two "went along with it" while there, but didn't feel good about the situation they were "put in" (c'mon how many visitors are gonna be man enough to say, "No thanks, I'll just stay back here in the dorm" at 17 &18??). Or, someone (a concerned fan who puts 2 & 2 together out one night at BWW's) notifies compliance, who leans on Urb, players, recruits. Now Dad is pissed that his son is about to be cast in poor light (underage drinking, benefits, etc) and yoinks there kid, claiming the school should know what's going on under it's noses. Just saying, potential could be huge even without the pedo thing, just fuel on the fire. |
| 2 weeks 6 days ago | Awful lot over at 11W starting to suggest improper benefits... |
tied to the creeper recruit stalker. Ranging from rumor he worked at BWW (perhaps origin of his twitter handle) in Grandview and was handing out free food/drinks... to a mention of OSU Compliance tweet today reminding OSU fans that ANYTHING (food, drinks, shirts etc) could be deemed a violation and not to give stuff to student-atheletes... to suggesting that the "drinks" were not the kind that minors should be given (alcohol)... |

There's a thousand and one guys (hetero-, die-hard football nuts) out there who would love to have the opportunity to be in this position. Getting the scoop on recruits, hanging with the team etc... WHO gets these chances?? Eiither someone with a lot of influence, or willing to spend a lot of money... not just cash in envelopes type stuff, but traveling/attending team functions etc. Why aren't you and I there getting our photos? This guy had to be in or around for more than just 3 or 4 photos and twitter posts. Why would recruits just "pick" him to do this with? There has to be some influence, like meals, a special tent to hang in, friend-of-someone type thing going on. Pure speculation, but either thee has been: 1) Program was aware of him and preventing him from contacting team, so he turned to recruits who are mad they weren't warned, or 2) Impermissible benfits occured to draw these kids to him, and now OSU fears bringing these kids on while still in the shadow (and on probation) of Tresselgate It will be very interesting to see what happens. I have to believe there'll be more to come. |

/s Really though, the ESPN article says he was pulled over after striking a curb in a car with temp tags... Maybe he knows TP's car guy...

| 10 weeks 3 days ago | Slight disagree??? |
Thought we took a one-point hit for a kid leaving, and two-point hit if the kid leaves ineligible?? So long as he transfers into another program I think the one-point goes away. If he just leaves school altogether, we still get dinged one? Yes?? Example of APR Calculation for a Men’s Football Team (n=85 at start of year)Semester 1 (Fall) Points Earned
75 student-athletes eligible and retained to next term (or graduate in that term) Semester Total 158 of 170 (929 APR) |
| 10 weeks 3 days ago | Since you posted in 2 threads, let me try to clarify for you. |
No one is talking about the coaches "kicking him off the team" this coming 2012-2013 year i.e. has nothing to do with him not getting his 4th year this fall as a redshirt junior. The point Brian made was that come 2 falls from now, 2013-2014, he likely wouldn't have been offered a fifth redshirt senior year. Since he's now gone, it's a wash. We gain nothing, hence the "already accounted for", and the reason it's being discussed relative to the 2013 class - again NOT this fall. I think you're also confusing the "left off roster thing" with the idea of him losing a scholly. Fall camp has a roster limit, and if he was buried/underperforming significantly, such that he didn't go to fall camp, the writing was on the wall. He still had his scholly, and could have continued at UM. I doubt the coaches would have "yanked it", even though as we all know via Saban/Miles schollies are currently 1 year at a time... If the young man wanted to still try and play, he likely made his decision to move on. |
| 12 weeks 13 min ago | It's post-season ban in baseball. |
Regular season is left up to individiual schools. NCAA bans alcohol at most post-season events, baseball for sure, because I've been a part of it. |
| 12 weeks 4 hours ago | Thanks for the info re: rowing etc |
I was not aware such scholarship opportunites existed. However, I have to wonder if they are allowed to exist, solely due to the lack of a similiar NCAA-run entitiy. I.E. the NCAA has no rowing... I doubt the NCAA would feel the same about a sport it also runs, like baseball or football. |
| 12 weeks 9 hours ago | Yes and no... |
While originally a Title 9 issue (baseball was not allowed to be a headcount sport - too many players on avg team, like football, not enough large women's teams to baleance out...), the actual number 11.7 is an NCAA number for competitveness. The original number of scholly was 15 I believe??? Too many small schools complained that the big dogs were stockpiling too many great players **especially pitching**, leading to uncompetitive results. The NCAA reduced the schooly number to "kick more kids out" into the smaller school mix. I.E. 3rd best starting pitcher prospect might get 1/4 scholly at premier school, but might be 1st best starter prospect and get 3/4 scholly at mid-major... |
| 12 weeks 10 hours ago | For the first time since beginning to read this blog, |
I thoroughly disagree with the Great Author. I saw this story yesterday and couldn't help but think this is a true case of throwing the baby out with the bath water. I also believe that this North/South thing is horribly miscontrued, it's really a North vs South/West thing. The "South" is not the outlier. First of all, secession would not likely be so cut and dried. The primary question that comes to mind is: Would the NCAA allow it? Sure you can run non-NCAA club sports all you want; however what non-NCAA sanctioned club sports are there (or non-NCAA Varsity for that matter) that offer scholarships? Does this currently exist elsewhere? I'd believe that when the non NCAA athletic-based scholly talk started, it'd cross some line with the NCAA. Secondly, the debate among college baseball circles has been two-fold. 1) Start of season dates, and 2) Out of conference away games for northern teams. The problem the North has had in trying to "fix" college baseball is attacking the start dates - trying to push them back. This will NOT fix things. Good luck getting the premier teams of the South/West to travel away from home just because the season starts later and it's 10 degrees warmer in Ann Arbor. Even within the South/West the "big dogs" don't ever leave home (except for occasional big rivalries to another dominate team's place i.e. South Carolina going to Clemson as part of home-and-home). The North has it no worse than most second tier, and mid-major schools from the South/West in this regards. For the above reasons, the real answer lies in getting the NCAA to limit the number of non-conference home games allowed. Check out some dominant West Coast/Southern teams' schedules. Do you really think they stay put b/c of weather? No, it's because they can. The NCAA needs to mandate teams get out on the road by limiting the number of games you can host. Preferably, even encourage inter-conference early season match-ups ala "The Big Ten/ACC Challenge" in hoops. Once you get the home-greedy bastards away form their advantageous confines, then they may realize it's damn cold in some of the places they now have to travel to, and be more receptive to changing season start dates. ** Most importantly** the North would have tons of allies outside the power teams in the West and South right there with them advocating for this (unlike the date change issue which the North will always fight against all the others). There are not the steep financial repercussions (like there would be in football if a power school had to give up home gates - hurting both the power and the sacrificial lamb) to consider here, or prevent this from happening. Also, by allowing some Northern teams to reduce travel costs, they may have more $$ to put towards sheltered/indoor facilities - which FYI even most of your dominant Southern schools have - it does rain/pour here in the spring - not all sunshine and roses. I think it'd be a tragic mistake for the BT, or any other conference to drop NCAA participation. Realistically, the best players in baseball, like hockey, never even make it to college. Those that do are looking for an NCAA student athlete experience. I fear losing that would turn BT baseball into a far worse entity than most are realizing. What would be the incentive to choose college over Single A ball - since most of these kids are drafted somewhere? The talent would drop significantly, even if made MLB friendly (wood bats, play vs minor leagues, etc) as kids chose to go straight into an organizations developmental program, rather than play for nothing in college. The prospective competition against the great baseball schools is enough to have drawn some kids in in the first place. Get busy advocating a plausible change that could have the desired ripple effects you want, rather than re-tooling the whole system. Be cautious, because if the BT sets precedence with this on a sport-by-sport basis, others like the SEC might sit up and take notice, and decide to have their own non-NCAA sanctioned National Championship for football.
