MSU moved down 11 spots after losing to ND. They aren't going to punish them for a 23-7 win, they dont actually watch the games.
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:48 PM ^
We will climb to about 12-15 after we beat ohio and play in the B1G Title game.
September 23rd, 2012 at 5:24 PM ^
You don't see that as a problem? If people like us can watch as many games as we do, why can't we expect them to do the same?
September 23rd, 2012 at 7:00 PM ^
124 Division I football teams in the nation. Meaning there are probably anywhere from 50-62 games on any given weekend. Even if voters ONLY paid attention to Top-25 teams that can still be 13-25 games they have to watch, 36-75 hours of game film.
I don't think it's possible for voters to actually watch all the games AND still get the rankings out by Sunday.
September 23rd, 2012 at 7:34 PM ^
Which raises the question: why do the polls need to be out on Sunday? Why not Monday?
September 23rd, 2012 at 9:56 PM ^
Even if you extended the day the rankings are released, a lot of these voters have jobs (writers, commentators, coaches and etc.). I doubt they're going to have time to watch 75 hours of football every week. So unless they want to switch to a system that doesn't rely on human voters, then this is the best the rankings are going to get.
September 23rd, 2012 at 11:14 PM ^
I agree completely - but you could at least maintain some pretense that they're surveying the landscape by delaying the vote. As it is, there's absolutely no way the coaches can know what's going on by 2 a.m. (or whatever the deadline is) on Sunday.
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:27 PM ^
Michigan lost. Michigan State won. Michigan State is 3-1. Michigan is 2-2. Are you proposing that a .500 team be ranked in the top 25? Yeah, Michigan's SOS is toughter than State's. But Michigan lost this week; State won.
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:42 PM ^
It makes perfect sense. Nobody watched MSU's game. All they saw was the score and a W. The Michigan game and interceptions are plastered all over the sports news, so everybody knows how that went, even if they didn't have an opportunity to watch it. The latest move in the polls is based on the latest game, and Michigan lost in ugly fashion.
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:47 PM ^
how much of a homer do you have to be to not understand michigan dropping out? We were embarrassed once on national tv, and saw our "superstar player" embarrass himself the second time on national tv. We narrowly beat a military academy, and smoked the worst team in the FBS. What exactly is worthy of a top 25 ranking here?
We have the potential to be one, but it would unfair to other teams to rank us over them when we haven't shown anything yet.
September 23rd, 2012 at 5:09 PM ^
September 23rd, 2012 at 1:20 PM ^
That's pretty much it. Two-loss teams shouldn't be in the top-25 of any given year, period, just 4 weeks in the season.
For all of MSU's struggles yesterday, they still won. They're not going to drop until they lose again, or somebody behind them makes a big statement win to justify moving ahead of MSU.
Besides, polls right now still don't mean very much. It all (theoretically) sorts itself out as the sample size becomes larger.
September 23rd, 2012 at 5:21 PM ^
September 23rd, 2012 at 1:30 PM ^
Errr, you were 20 something, and lost? Generally that means you fall out if there are enough teams to backfill. Plus at 2-2 there are still lots of 3-1 and 4-0 teams.
September 23rd, 2012 at 2:34 PM ^
doesn't play like UM did Saturday night, on the offensive side of the ball.
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:19 PM ^
I am not terribly upset that our two losses come from top 10 teams.
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:31 PM ^
Am I crazy for feeling better about our B1G chances after last night's game? Aside from the turnovers, we looked great. Our defense was stout as hell. It took awhile, but Fitz finally got going and I thought our OL looked pretty good overall. You take away the bonehead turnovers and we looked like a legitimate B1G contender.
On another note, I'm seeing rumors on other sites that Garnder might be out for the season with a broken collarbone from the bleacher run-in. Can anyone confirm?
September 23rd, 2012 at 1:12 PM ^
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?
September 23rd, 2012 at 5:23 PM ^
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:40 PM ^
Umm, ND is a Top 10 team now...they won't be at the end of the season. They are going to get beaten badly by USC, Stanford, and Oklahoma. Probably a loss in there that they don't expect also.
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:45 PM ^
I'm not so sure about Oklahoma. Their fans are ready to toss their Heisman hopeful QB out on his ear for his performance in last night's game. They are not the Oklahoma of 5-10 years ago.
September 23rd, 2012 at 1:02 PM ^
This. Oklahoma has not impressed people this year, and I'm not sure that they are any more a threat to ND than UM. Landry Jones may be one of the most overrated "stars" in CFB this year.
September 23rd, 2012 at 9:55 PM ^
And I'm not so sure about USC. They haven't been the world beating team I expected to start the season.
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:22 PM ^
I don't understand why Oregon and LSU are both still ranked ahead of FSU.
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:36 PM ^
September 23rd, 2012 at 1:00 PM ^
Arizona... I'm not convinced they're that good, and I feel like the Ducks' defense may be a bit suspect this year. I dunno I just think based off resume, FSU looks like the only team that could play with 'Bama right now
September 23rd, 2012 at 1:56 PM ^
Arizona had 5 trips to the red zone and got zero points to show for it. Arizona put up a good amount of offense but threw 2 pick sixes. It was more about Arizona's ineptitude rather than Oregon dismantling them.
September 23rd, 2012 at 5:22 PM ^
But how many pollsters stayed up past midnight to watch that game? It was a late start to begin with, and it was only 13-0 at half, so Arizona gets props for hanging around, and then Oregon gets more props for "blowing them out"
September 23rd, 2012 at 5:27 PM ^
That's pathetic if true. If they aren't willing to put in the time to watch the games they are voting based on, they shouldn't be voting.
September 24th, 2012 at 1:32 PM ^
Except for the score, which was much worse for Arizona than for us.
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:34 PM ^
Makes sense. UM has to beat some of these teams before people will take them seriously. And honestly, it wasn't an MNC year anyway; the rankings are pretty irrelevant to most teams in that context.
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:36 PM ^
I think the B1G still has an outside shot of a 2nd BCS game with whoever comes in 2nd in the legends division, especially if its Michigan or Nebraska since their fanbases are really big.
September 23rd, 2012 at 10:11 PM ^
Maybe, but I'll say unless there are radical improvements, I don't think we deserve it this year.
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:43 PM ^
As long as we beat MSU and OSU, I will be happy. Winning the Big Ten would be a nice bonus. At this point we are 2-2, with our only losses to top ten teams. This season can still be a huge success. Hopefully this upcomming bye week is utilized to the fullest extent. Our defense actually looked quite stout last night, so as long as we implement a more secure offensive gameplan I'm actually not feeling too bad at this point.
September 23rd, 2012 at 12:52 PM ^
I will take a 9-2 record, smoking ohio and beating up our lil' bro, Big Ten Championship and a trip to the Rose Bowl every single year. Then the only 2 losses from top 10 teams.
Hail Yes i will take it.
September 23rd, 2012 at 6:10 PM ^
Who wouldn't? lol. That's a pretty tall order on a yearly basis. I think most programs would take that.
September 23rd, 2012 at 1:01 PM ^
So 2014 Cass Tech LB Deon Drake just committed to MSU. Is someone that we were looking at closely or should I just ignore this?
September 23rd, 2012 at 1:05 PM ^
Michigan hasn't offered and there's still two years until he hits a college campus. I wouldn't worry too much even if he stays a solid sparty commit.
September 23rd, 2012 at 1:12 PM ^
If we can win the next 8 games, then we deserve that top 25 ranking. The Big 10 is getting beat up in the media because of a perceived lack of quality this year. So if 1 team is ranked in the top 10 at the end of year, then I would consider it a good thing. UM can run the table from here on out, but we can't have another performance like last night
September 23rd, 2012 at 8:30 PM ^
I wouldn't say "perceived."
September 23rd, 2012 at 1:15 PM ^
It should reflect that M dropped out.
:(

September 23rd, 2012 at 1:28 PM ^
Polls don't matter. The goal is to win the B1G Championship and beat ohio.
This Is MICHIGAN.

September 23rd, 2012 at 1:55 PM ^
They are unranked in the AP, but that loss to Oregon State isn't looking too bad after all. If it was up to me, I wouldn't rank them. If you hadn't seen them play this year and were voting on their record alone, then 23-25 seems justified.
September 23rd, 2012 at 1:55 PM ^
Watching the Oregon game I was surprised. I expected Arizona to score on them like everybody has, and was looking for a little bit of a shootout. Then Arizona can't score, but they hold Oregon to 13 first half points. The final score wasn't really an indication of how the game went. I think it's entirely possible for a team to shut down Oregon for a whole game, now that a first year RR 3-3-5 defense did it to them for an entire half @ Oregon. Surprised to see KState jump Stanford, since Stanford beat a better opponent. Also surprised to see Rutgers get ranked over Northwestern, or Boise ranked at all after the BYU game. Like I was saying yesterday I'd be surprised if Oklahoma, West Virginia, and South Carolina are even ranked by the end of the season. All look like they could be 4+ loss teams in December.
September 23rd, 2012 at 1:58 PM ^
Agree. I would put NW and UCLA in before Rutgers, Boise St, and maybe even Nebraska. Nebraska and UCLA both have one loss, UCLA beat Nebraska and lost to #18 Oregon State.
