I actually liked our chances better before this move.

I know most people think vegas is about getting even money on both sides and all that bullshit, but they know what they are doing.  When I see stuff like this it flashes a red light that says do not bet.

I hope I'm wrong, but I wish I could put up a thousand to win 5 against us; its easy money even at 10-1.  Beating OSU and winning two playoff games, that is a lot... and worst come to worst you can always hedge in THE game...  too bad you can't bet against teams winning the natty

Someties they do offer that type of bet.  The bookies will put odds on a "rest of field" choice.  But this typically only happens if one team or person is an overwhelming favorite.  You see this quite a bit in tennis and golf.

You don't get to call it a "natty" until your team is winning it every other year.  A diminuitive nickname implies familiarity.  I am guessing that close to half of the people here don't remember 1997 and almost nobody here remembers 1948.

Calling it a "natty" without actually winning it sounds like an RCMB move.  I would be quite happy to never see thte term used again until Harbaugh's second National Championship.

Good lord, second-best odds to win it all?  Can we like, beat a rival first?  It seriously bothers me that we would be rated this highly with so many question marks on the team and three tough games on the road.

I'm excited for the season, but let's get a grip here.

A lot, and I mean a lot, would have to go perfect for this to happen. And top it off with a new starting qb, sprinkle in both dog fights are on the road, and you have a recipe for trouble. Can't wait to see how wrong I will be. I was wrong a LOT in '97 too!! 'Course I was drunk a lot in '97. Then again, I'm drunk a lot now too! Holy Schnike!! I see the similarities! We're winning the natty lite ice, baby!!!

I think fans here are just having fun. Really don't care what Vegas is doing unless it helps us in recruiting. Harbaugh is not going to change his plans. That's why he's successful. i can tell you though if he feels Peters gives us the best chance at winning our league, even with the inherent turnovers that come with a freshman, he would be the man under center.

Because that's never the case, it will be Speight or O'Korn. I have not watched either this year but Harbaugh has watched both. We'll be better off than last season from the experience factor, but seeing Jake is a pro qb, chances are good our play there might not be as good as last season. I actually forgot how much speed he could put on the ball until watching him last night in the replay. Rudock could throw missiles at times.

On the other hand, if one of these two has Jake like ability, we should start off much better than last season based on nothing more than a much improved running game taking the  pressure off the qb and then when he passes, as open as Jake and our wideouts were at times last season, add even more to that.

I don't see it and haven't since 2011 (thx Denard). It was Hart before that, too. We have an OL that couldn't be more average and it has question marks. Our starting HB has the heart of a crazed Wolverine but runs a ZERO FAKES 4.95/40. The rest of them are unproven, injury prone or trying to achieve their recruiting hype. The OL is led by a RS SR that was supposedly ready to play as an 18 year old but still finds himself blocking nobody, the HB or the wrong defender. Our best OL is moving to a position he's never played before. What proof beyond off-season hope is there for a "much improved" running game?

I'll take a stab at it

U-M ran a ton of red-zone running plays last season—nearly twice as many as in 2014 (100-55). Just over 20% of our run plays were in the red zone, a higher proportion than OSU, MSU and Bama.

This artificially depresses the stats. There are fewer yards to gain in the red zone, and the defense is more compact. Everyone's numbers are worse in the red zone.

If you look at performance between the 20s, you'll see the improvement. We were over a half yard better than MSU in that spectrum (4.63 to 4.02). In 2014, it was 5.52 to 4.43 in their favor.

The problem with this:

Neither Michigan or Michigan State was good at running the ball in 2015 (2015 was arguably the worst year for running offense in any of the past 5-6 years at MSU). Sure, maybe we edged them with 4.63, but in 2014 they were at 5.52. MSU's offense for both of those last two years has been primarily passing based due to Cook. Especially last season. So MSU is not a good team to compare ourselves to if we want to be good at running. (Also, red zone running matters. You can't just delete it. If we weren't great in the red zone, that means we weren't as good at running the ball.)

I'd rather compare us to OSU, Bama or LSU and I know we would not stack up well.

We were not good at running the ball in 2015. We weren't bad either, we were simply average.

We need our OL and RBs to finally be difference makers. They haven't been for years. Throughout the Hoke years they were active disadvantages. Last year they were neither an advantage or disadvantage, but in Harbaugh year 2 this is the place we can look to on the offense for marked improvement (and we'll need it if we're going to be successful). We are returning every single running back on our roster and all of our OL except 1. If we don't improve, it will be highly disappointing.

I've been screaming this into my phone for months now. We'll be good but "NC good"? Unlikely. This should be the year we get back on top of msu. Osu? They're a different animal. We likely go 10-2 with the bowl/result being a giant unknown. osu will be one of those losses. We're not that talented yet but we're getting there.

I think Clemson and Alabama are better than us but when fans say that we have too many issues to be rated that high, they're not taking into account other teams. The way people talk on here we're the only team who has to replace a qb. I feel much better about our new qb being good than LSU'S returning starter being good. Alabama, FSU, Stanford etc. have to replace their qb too. Then we have to replace 3 linebackers that weren't very good last year anyway.

Ok, people understand this has nothing to do with rankings or predictions right? Vegas posts initial odds and slide them up or down based on where the betting/money is going.

This will bother people because they'll feel as if we now have a target on our back; they'd rather "sneak up" on the country. To hell with that, I think it's great. What Vegas says will have zero impact on our teams performance but will still have us in the national spotlight all year. The more coverage the better. Let those recruits see Harbaugh's face everywhere. Especially with him holding that championship trophy.

there was 0 chance to "sneak up" on anyone once harbaugh signed if anything, the expectations combined with lousy schedule will lead to severe disappointment if worse than a 10-2 season. I have no doubt those expectations will be warranted in a couple years, but for now, it's a little worrying when you consider the redshirt soph/junior classes were like 40th in the country and the 3 big games are all on the road

You know, I see that quote from Barnum and then I see Finebaum's head and then I start thinking, "Perhaps Paul is merely misunderstanding his destiny here. Perhaps Paul IS the sucker and all it will take is for an Alabama to come along and begin to lick his head on the air." There would be no more show after that unless the SEC Network has an After Hours channel that shows more than Vanderbilt football.
