UM vs OSU common opponents statistics

Submitted by preed1 on
Michigan and Ohio State have six common opponents: Indiana, Maryland, Penn state, Rutgers, Minnesota, Michigan State. Below are the statistics versus these common opponents. Obviously you can't take into account personnel changes, weather, Hidden yardage (penalties and special teams) etc. Ohio State average margin of victory- 18.16 Michigan average margin of victory- 13.16 Ohio State average rushing yards- 221 Michigan average rushing yards- 128 Ohio State average passing yards- 193 Michigan average passing yards- 258 Ohio State rushing yards given up- 160 Michigan rushing yards given up- 122 Ohio State passing yards given up- 173 Michigan passing yards given up- 196 What does it mean?.... I have too much time at work.

that in big rivalry games, "stats go out the window".  But I've never seen a shred of actual evidence to support that (even though the stats are all out there for anyone to analyze).  It seems to be one of those things that's just true because everyone knows it is.

Of course we need to watch the games.  But the quality of team is obviosuly relevant (contrary to "throw out the records"), and it gives you good insight as to the liklihood of winning.

And if there was no such thing as a point spread, then yes, you could make a killing by betting on the "better" team.  Unfortunately, Vegas also thinks the relative quality of the teams leading up to the game is relevant to its outcome.

No.  Occasionally--actually quite a bit the past 11 years--the BETTER team has not won...but on Saturday we right the wrongs, re-tilt he axis, rethink the mistakes, correct the imbalance, recalibrate the norm, revie the glory and restore all ORDER.  The scarlet letter must be irradicated in our house.  The space time continuum is FINALLY returned to its natural state.

I mean it tells us that despite underperforming relative to expectations they are still probably a better team than us.  Not that it matters all that much, jsut sort of shows is both teams play their best osu wins.  I highly doubt both teams play a perfect game though so its all good.

Anyone expecting any of the turmoil from the MSU loss to disrupt or distract OSU this week is likely to be disappointed.  They will be wholly focused on beating us, and they still have better talent at pretty much every position on the field.  With Chesson out and no running game to speak of, our offense is going to have a very hard time generating points.

The problem with these comparisons is that it's our coach's first season and their coach's fourth. One would expect OSU's entire body of work to look better given that their offensive and defensive systems were well in place from the outset. For us the learning curve was steeper. Compare our passing offense now, for example, with what it was like in September.

I don't think the statistics or the comparison is very compelling to be honest.  The teams play completely different styles on offense with different philosophies on defense.

I'm sure the pre-game comparison in 2013 wouldn't have predicted that type of game and the numbers from this season just aren't that different.

Over the years this game was always a toss up (until the last decade anyway).  This was always the game where we took pride in spoiling their season or vice versa.  This is a game where stats, ranking and numbers in general mean nothing.  Should be  great game!  Go Blue!
