Wasn't he also a sprinter and didn't he try out for the Olympic team in... maybe '92?
January 6th, 2015 at 10:49 AM ^
when he was on the track team, he would make the road runner sound at an opponent before he would pass him. . . .
it might simply be a South Quad legend, but it's fun to think about. . .
January 6th, 2015 at 10:16 AM ^
Do you think this is the reason why his son hasn't been discussed as much?
January 6th, 2015 at 10:22 AM ^
for his son to talk a lot about Michigan with this is as a serious possibility.

especially given that he plays two positions of emphasis for this class. Contact with a lot of recruits goes through the parents. It's safe to assume that's been done.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:25 AM ^
Hopefully BOTH Tyrone Wheatleys come home to Michigan....
January 6th, 2015 at 2:20 PM ^
May have to wait to see what Marrone does. If Marrone thinks he'll get hired to an NFL team, it wouldn't surprise me to see Tyrone go with him.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:28 AM ^
I'm not sure we'll know. From the recruitniks out there, Jr. hasnt' been hearing from MI all that much lately (obvioulsy that would change if his dad were to come coach here).
On the other hand, he recently released a top four that did not include Michigan, but did include heavyweights such as Alabama. Who knows what will end up happening. Maybe he'll come to M if his father is hired. Either way, I could see Jr wanting to forge his own path somewhere else.

I think your last point is kinda what I meant.

January 6th, 2015 at 10:18 AM ^
Yes - this would be a large upgrade. Make it happen.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:20 AM ^
I can't help but think the, "I played in the NFL and know what it takes", has got to both help with recruiting and buying in.
This is for RB coach right? Have we done a run down of Coordinator positions since the one a few days ago when it was guesses and unicorns? Okay maybe a tad more concrete but still. No idea what's official at this point if anything?
January 6th, 2015 at 10:20 AM ^
One of my favorite players growing up - sign this man!!!
January 6th, 2015 at 10:26 AM ^
I still remember his long touchdown run in the Rose Bowl like it was yesterday
January 6th, 2015 at 10:42 AM ^
He broke off 2 long ones in the 1993 Rose Bowl and 1 in the 1992 Rose Bowl (granted, this one made the score 35-14 Washington--that 1991 Washington squad was awesome).
January 6th, 2015 at 10:54 AM ^
That 1991 Washington team was raging with steroid use. I've repressed most of that game but seem to remember Steve (don't make me angry...you wouldn't like me when I'm angry) Emtman blowing past double teams all day long and living in our back field. Our O line was pretty damn good too.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:21 AM ^
Come back home Ty!
January 6th, 2015 at 10:23 AM ^
It would be a bridge too far to Wheatley and Timmy B to be co-RB coaches right?

I'm confused. There's been a dude (I assume) on the boards that's been swearing up and down since Harbaugh was hired that he knew Wheatley on some level and that this wasn't happening due to differences in their personalities or something.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:39 AM ^
You may be thinking of Mike Hart, who had a public tussle with Harbaugh over UofM academics when Harbaugh was coaching Stanford - it all went down about 8 years ago, but Hart (being Hart) was very blunt in his criticisms of Harbaugh's comments.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:56 AM ^
Haha come on man give me some credit. I know the difference b/w Mike Hart and Tyrone Wheatley - my favorite Wolverine EVAH. This guy posted in a couple of threads in the days after Harbaugh was hired. Said he knew Wheatley, and based on their personality differences (I took that to mean coaching styles), he didn't think Wheatley was interested in working for Harbaugh.
I'd dig out the comments but I'm too lazy to do it.

and give us the low-down...
January 6th, 2015 at 1:59 PM ^
I'll plus one you as a form of apology. I'd heard of no ill will between Wheatley and Harbaugh, but whether they are a good personality "fit" is something I've no knowledge of either way.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:24 AM ^
Does anyone know what Ty's other options/offers are? Is it either Bills or M (should Harbaugh extend him an offer)?
January 6th, 2015 at 10:37 AM ^
The Bills are in limbo at this point awaiting their next coach.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:49 AM ^
is waiting for his next stop (as well as the ~6 other NFL openings waiting to hire their new Head Coaches).

+1 for Dumb & Dumber reference.

You have to believe this helps with Mike Weber as well!!
My god what an upgrade over Fred Jackson. I forgot for a second Wheatley coached Spiller and Jackson.

He seemed to do pretty well with the RBs in Buffalo. Think that it would be a great hire!!
January 6th, 2015 at 10:28 AM ^
But he's a big-time hire. I thought I had heard that he wasn't looking for a lateral move, but maybe he is fine taking the RB job since it's under Harbaugh, who he will learn a lot from.
He's a great recruiter, he has pro and college coaching experience, and obviously has great name recognition from his playing days. He woulld fit the mold of young, hungry, up-and-coming guy that is going to build Harbaugh's coaching tree.
January 6th, 2015 at 10:58 AM ^
Of all the "Michigan Men," Harbaugh is the only one who can build a new "coaching tree." The reason is that Harbaugh took Bo's lessons but then gained valuable experience outside of the Schembechler coaching tree. Now, he has a chance to build a "tree" that is even more impressive than Bo's, which IIRC won three National Championships (Carr, McCartney, Miles), albeit two of those are split championships.
The mark of a great student is to surpass the master. Hopefully, that is exactly what happens with Harbaugh.

I rather felt compelled to go back and watch some of WolverineHistorian's video compilation of Tyrone Wheatley highlights (I had the fortune of seeing several of the runs in that video in person too) and I was very quickly reminded of why this hire - if it happens - would be an excellent hire, not to mention the NFL and coaching experience at both levels.

I dont udnerstand the logic here. Or I think the emphasis is misplaced. I want to see highlights of the running backs Wheatley has coached rather than highlights of his own running back days. Knowing how to teach is primary, having a history in the position is necessary, but secondary. The 'excelllent hire' lies in his coaching ability, not in how good of a running back he was. Hell, he might have been only a bench-warming backup at a D-II program, but that doesnt mean he doesnt know the position. The big question is whether he can teach the position.
