I thought this was supposed to stop happening.

I can see why he would want to stay where he started to set in his roots, though. Would have been such a boon for Michigan.

We knew UCLA was the team to beat. We took our shot, but once he left the UM campus without committing, the writing was on the wall.

It feels like we come in second on more than our share of recruits. If we received some sort of compensatory player for finishing second, our team would be stacked.

Toia was never going to come here and play for mediocre team.    Nolan is definitely not coming don’t let the m sources say otherwise like fort.   We will prolly get some 3 star tackle from northeast.    Jordan Phillips is the most important land in class in my opinion.

Yeah. It is. 2020 notwithstanding, take a look at the records, year by year, for the last 5-6 years for UCLA, which plays in a far weaker conference than Michigan, compare them to Michigan's records, and you tell me.

Even if their records were similar, that wouldn't be the point, pal. You explicitly said Toia was not going to come play for a mediocre team. If that were truly the case then your logic would be extremely flawed, given where he's choosing to play.

Michigan is lightyears away from where it wants to be, but it has been a far better program than UCLA since pretty much the minute Harbaugh set foot on campus.

Am I missing the part where UCLA is the best option if he doesn't want to play for a mediocre or worse team? Like on what planet has UCLA been better than UM under Harbaugh? Based on record, yes UM has been objectively better than UCLA since Harbaugh has been here.

I can imagine that they put him on the phone w ZC as that would def help UCLAs pitch. I know I would do the same if I were in their shoes.

UM has not had the type of success recruiting Cali as I'd hoped when Harbaugh was hired. Then when you have so many high profile west coast recruits flame out or transfer it has to have some impact on future recruits and their coaches.

although I got sucked into the hype a little bit.

What was the hype you were hearing? All I heard was that Michigan had a legit chance, but I don't recall crystal balls indicating Michigan was the odds-on choice, nor did Sam Webb have a "gut feeling" about this particular recruitment.

Not saying this is the case with what you remember seeing, but there are plenty of people making questionable prognostications on the internet.

For example, Brandon Brown predicted a couple of weeks ago that Alan Bowman would start in the opener against WMU. When I asked him how likely it was that a guy was going to waltz into fall camp with no prior experience in the offense and win the starting job over McNamara or McCarthy, his rationale was that "Bowman didn't transfer to be second-string."

Jay Toia committed to USC when Johnny Nansen was D-Line coach there. Nansen now coaches at UCLA. Toia left USC because he didn't get along with the new D-Line coach. And so Toia joined Nansen at UCLA.

If that's the case, I'm sure this was a done deal and he was just exploring his options. I'm sure the media made this more than it actually was. Just like the Walter Nolan situation. Once that tweet went out, what was the first post here? Nolen was likely a Gator. People jumping to conclusions, and making their own conclusions.

That being said, if this turns out to be some admissions issue then it's time to overthrow them

Some USC fans are speculating Toia is trying to find a way to get the 1 year wait waived. And they say that is why he's using not being able to make OVs because of covid a reason to get the waiver. So if that's true, the OV to Michigan may have just been window dressing for that.
