Today's attendance: 102,824
The streak continues.
Cutting it close. Michigan's smallest crowd since 1995 when they beat Memphis 24-7 in front of 100,862 fans. The stadium was at a capacity of 102,501 then. I was only a little over a month old.
This should be the closest it comes. I can't imagine another game being that low the rest of this year.
Again, I don't know why the media even bothers writing about the streak possibly ending. It won't. Ever.
Even if today really was below 100K, you're nuts if you think the athletic department will allow that to be the announced attendance.

DB can pay me to come to any game.. seriously I'll do it for a dollar. He doesn't even have to pay for my food, drink, and gas to get up there.
September 13th, 2014 at 7:53 PM ^
I believe it. Only a couple sections in the corners had noticeable holes. 10,000 is a lot of people and another 10k could have filled those holes easily.
Now whether they made any money on a lot of tickets is another story.

It's also true that in our miniscule seats, an entire row can stretch out a bit and make five empty seats disappear by scooting over about an inch apiece. Wouldn't look any different, either.

to the tune of at least 10,000-12,000 more people in the seats.
As tired as I am of seeing empty seats at Michigan Stadium, it's a trend that won't go away (as has been discussed in numerous threads here). Sure, we'll see a full Big House when we have a quality opponent or big rival on the field, but whether the attendance is announced as 99,999 or 100,001 (or 102,000+ as it was yesterday), the fact remains that there are huge blocks of unoccupied seats, which translates to smaller concession sales, which in turn translates to less $$$ for the Michigan Athletic Program. Dave Brandon eventually might get it.
I brought my kids and 5-yr-old grandaughter to the game yesterday, and we all (especially my grandaughter) had a good time. Plenty of leg room for all of us up in rows 78 and 79, as I would estimate at least 15% of the sold tickets up in our area were no-shows. My grandaughter (with her giant foam hands) gave "high-fives" from our aisle seats to literally hundreds of people leaving early, and probably enjoyed that as much as anything on the field all day long.

Yes, there are rules - they were actually including in my freshmen "Welcome" edition of the Daily:
Don't start unless the game is out of reach (MU was only down 7).
Don't start until the fourth, or in extreme blowouts the third is ok.
Regular, Regular, Slow, Fast, Reverse, Split.
Sadly, there have been so few blowouts since I was a freshmen in 2006 that the tradition is becoming lost to the ages.
(And, you did post the exact same thing in another thread, which is kinda lazy, I guess, but whatever).

You really think that those students are reading your (many times repeated) posts and correcting their behavior?
Egotism much?
September 13th, 2014 at 9:23 PM ^
A couple dumbasses at the bottom of section 17 (I sit in 18) tried to start the wave as well, if I recall, in the 2nd quarter! They tried at least 10 times. The fine folks in the south endzone were having none of it.

Yeah, that was just insanely ridiculous, absolutely inexcuable and beyond embarassing for whatever dumbshit fans were trying to start it there. Forget that it was a tie game at the time, still in the first half, the wave starts WITH THE STUDENT SECTION, PERIOD. It is such a self-evident fact I was trying to figure out if that was actually what I was seeing, because I couldn't believe even the stupidest of fans would try that, but obviously I underestimated their intelligence.
Complain about the students for trying to get it started in a seven point game in the third quarter (and I have, we shouldn't have been doing that, although to be fair it didn't get far), but what tthose fans did in the second quarter transcends any student stupidity with the wave. That's just on another level.

A. Not sure if serious...
B. If serious, step away from the keyboard, about 10,000 feet and take a look at yourself a bit, and the things you're fretting about in life.
September 14th, 2014 at 4:15 PM ^
You can go with A. Not serious, but it was still disappointing to see.

(I responded to your post in the other thread too, but here it is repasted):
You'd be proud of me, I was right in between the two completely idiotic groups of 3 who were trying to start the wave and I was quite vocal in trying to shut it down. They were still able to get it through a chunk of the student section, but the other side of the student section was having none of it, so by the time it got out of the student section it was over.
I really wish students had more knowledge of game day traditions like the appropriate time to start a wave. I did what I could as an individual student who happens to sit right where the wave starts, I hope it made a difference.
Those rules (blowout, late third/fourth qtr, on defense, etc.) have been posted it looks like here, and it should be mandatory reading for students.
September 13th, 2014 at 11:50 PM ^
Those weren't students. Students don't sit in the SW corner of the stadium.

The announced attedance is not only people in the seats. It includes stadium staff, people in the press box, the teams & other people on the field, etc. - everyone comes through the gates. How else you think they get crowds of more than 109,951+ when there are only 109,951 seats?
If you back out the non-paying attendance, it is quite possible that there were less than 100,000 people in the stands.

All sporting venues do this nowadays. It's all about the number of tickets sold. The Pistons officially drew 15,000 fans per game last year but the number of tickets actually used per game might not have even been 10K.
What the NCAA does that is different is that it allows people with press/field passes and stadium workers to be counted in addition to the number of tickets sold.
September 13th, 2014 at 11:51 PM ^
The teams aren't counted.
September 14th, 2014 at 1:22 AM ^
...but yes, everyone else that walks through the gate is counted. This includes the event staff, vendors, media, marching bands, etc. It also includes tickets sold, whether they are scanned or not. I knew that we'd be okay when I learned that a couple hundred member choir and the Miami marching band would be in attendence, plus the invited military members that took part in the pre-game celebration. However, I figured there'd be at least 100,500, but also it would be under 101,000. I was a a little surprised that there were almost 103,000. Like others have stated, I also expect that this will the lowest attended game this season.

It sounds as if he's saying that (as a real Michigan fan) he loves Michigan football--he just doesn't like most of the rest of us--or at least those who don't conform to his rules.
September 13th, 2014 at 9:40 PM ^
If you are upset or dubious about the 100k streak being kept intact, that is seriously screwed up. It's a great thing about Michigan football and a tribute to our fans.
September 13th, 2014 at 10:23 PM ^
Yes and the fans are becoming quite apathetic. Back in the day Michigan football was the # 1 thing to do on a Saturday in Ann Arbor. Now everyone leaves at halftime to go study or do chores. Something they could do at all other times during the week.
