Tigers, Pistons and Wings, Oh My!
Mates,
The Pistons won a road game just now and probably guaranteed themselves a spot in the playoffs. The Tigers won despite giving up a run in the bottom of the 9th (shocker, I know). And the Wings are up 2-0 on the Flyers in the 2nd with Howard in goal and the Wings also tallying a short-handed goal. A win in that game is practically a lock on the playoffs as well.
Not a bad night so far, hope the Wings hold on for the 'W'.
Let's Go, Red Wings.

I wonder if the Cavs resting LeBron for their game in Indiana last night said something about whether they'd prefer to play the Pacers or Pistons. (It was an opportunity for the Pistons to jump into 7th, but the Cavs lost, which they usually do without LeBron.) We might see for sure in the regular season finale.
At this point, I kind of want a shot at the Cavs, since the Pistons would be playing with house money in the playoffs and this Cavs team feels beatable to me. The Pistons have taken two of three from those guys during the regular season.

The Pistons are the best team in Detroitish.
Crazy what having Not Joe Dumars running things will do.
Joe D made his fair share of mistakes the last couple of years he was in charge, but don't forget the team assembled 10-15 years ago.
I remember Piston mania of the mid-2000s fondly.
I'm glad things are bouncing back. During my senior year of HS (Utica essentially neighbors Rochester/Auburn Hills) they literally had stacks of Pistons tickets left on the counters in the lunch room, free to take. Multiple times this happened.
They didn't even charge two cokes. They were just free.
*1957.
The Pistons just haven't had a great history pre-80s.
Of course it doesn't help matters that their first arena was...............................uh.......
Cobo Arena. The weirdest designed arena maybe ever. Random wall in the middle of it.
I saw a wrestling show there in its later years in 2006 and yeah it was weird.
and did you cheat? you know, did you pull out a pencil and stab the sheikh or something like that?
As a wrestling fan from this area I really wish I had been able to see the Sheik live. The only times I have seen him are on really low quality videos I have found online.
My Dad grew up as a huge fan of Bobo Brazil and told me how the Shiek used to scare the crap out of him as a kid.
Dick the Bruiser vs Alex Karras at the Lindel AC was a good one. I remember the first time I saw the Sheik throw fire on a guy I nearly crapped myself. I did see Bobo Brazil at the Olympia when I was very young, to young to properly appreciate it.
'this is fair warning....'
with the Coco-Butt for the win!
Awesome place for concerts. Such as:
Also see: Frampton Comes Alive, Kiss Alive!, etc. If you don't like walls in venues, you probably wouldn't understand the odd charm of the old Mariucci Arena, either.
And while we're at it... Rockers. Is. Soccerrrrrrr.
I think I saw the Chinese national ping pong team there too....
That's awesome. Was Forrest Gump as good as they say?
This point has been going for like 8 hours. How is no one else talking about this?
Forrest was named after a Confederate General who also became the first Grand Wizard of the KKK...
One of the most electric basketball games I ever saw was played at Cobo: Chris Webber's DCDS Yellowjackets (reignng Class B state champs) against Jalen Rose's Detroit Southwestern Prospectors (reigning Class A state champs).
It was in the heat of the recruiting cycle. Magic showed up courtside to show the love. Game was fantastic.
Tigers: 1901
Red Wings (Originally the Cougars): 1926
Lions: 1934
Pistons: 1957
I can't think of any city that has multiple sports teams where the NBA team gets the most love. I know the Dolphins don't draw well, but I think they're still more beloved than the Heat.

and the Lakers ABSOLUTELY own the town in terms of pro sports. Kings aren't even close, even though they've been dominant on the ice lately. Not even close. Dodgers are well ahead of the Kings too. The new football team will as well. The ceiliing is relatively low for a hockey team in Los Angeles compared to other sports for a lot of reasons.
You missed the joke.
He probably got the joke a few hours later.
Not a great time to be making the argument, but I think you could say the Lakers get the most love in LA.
LA is a Lakers town.
Hoops is big on the east coast. I think the Celtics are traditionally #2 in Boston (Saux probably #1). Recent success of Pats and Bruins middies the water, but overall the Celtics are #2 with a bullet.
The Knicks could probably rule NYC if they ever got good. People still talk about those early '70's teams. Wizards and Sixers would also be bigger if they weren't such inept franchises.
Bulls with Jordan were kings of Chicago, but that was all about Mike and 6 championships.
Right now the Warriors are huge in the Bay Area, definitely threatening Giants and Niners. Moving back to SF could solidify that if they stay good - or they could go back to being as insignificant as the A's and Sharkies.
I think the Dodgers are a very close second if not equal in popularity. They have always been a big draw in LA, whether good or bad.
The Clippers, Kings, Angels, and Rams will always be looking up at those top two franchises.
for the Knicks in NYC. I went to a game there in the middle of Linsanity and the entire city was buzzing. Part of it is that it's the only sport with one New York team, so everyone is united, which is pretty cool. (No I don't count the Nets. No one in New York will ever stop rooting for the Knicks to root for the Nets)
The Tigers actually go back to 1894. They were a charter member of the Western League, which declared itself a new major league in 1901 and renamed itself the American League.
Only four AL teams are as old - the Twins, White Sox, and Orioles - but all of them started off in other cities and with other names in the original Western League. The White Sox didn't move to Chicago til 1900. Of course the Twins and O's are the old Senators and Browns, but they, too, originated in other cities even before that.
So the Tigers really are the single oldest AL team still rooted in place.
Edit - and I would add that "Detroit Tigers" as a continuously used name is older than all but three others in all of MLB - only "Cincinnati Reds," "Pittsburgh Pirates," and "Philadelphia Phillies" are older.
Joe D had his hand in every NBA Championship the Pistons ever won. That has to count for something...
You know, the 2013 Michigan Football team looked pretty good on paper heading into the season......
I'll wait and see. So far Prince Pretty has been a massive disappointment.
And if there's no Joe D, there's no 2004 NBA title or six straight ECFs. He could not figure out how to replace his aging nucleus, but that does not discount the fact that he built an NBA champion and one of the better runs in NBA history without a homegrown lottery pick. I don't think I can name another team that's been able to do that.
was a homegrown lottery pick.
The Pistons received the pick from Vancouver in exchange for Otis Thorpe (I believe four years prior).
deserves a lot of credit for the success of the 00s, but he clearly was passed up when so many other teams advanced their analytics and player evaluation. The typical NBA front office changed and left him in the dust.
