Texas, Saban, coaching changes and recruiting

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on
If we're going to do wild speculation and ridiculous possibilities (or borderline impossibilities) like the thread below about football ever becoming an Olympic sport. Let's go further down the yellow brick road straying from reality. It certainly seems like Mack Brown is stepping down at Texas. Now, let's suspend probability and say that somehow Texas were to lure Saban to Texas. Does that open up the recruitment of Alabama recruits like say....DeShawn Hand? Has anyone in the recruiting universe like Coach Brown posed the question. Further would a new coach like Saban be required to honor the already large set of commitments Texas already has or could a new coach try to bring his recruits from his previous school and dump current recruits. Finally, in the heap of coaching changes that has been touched off, is there anyone who committed to a school facing a coaching that we were in on and might get back on?

I don't see Hand ending up at MIchigan.  I believe his reasons for picking Bama were more than just engineering vs. sports management.  I hope I'm wrong, but it's a moot point unless Saban leaves Alabama.   Most likely, when Brown steps down from UT, the rest of the Big 12 teams will swoop down on his recruits like buzzards.  Either way, that won't impact Michigan.

Also straying from the reality that this has already  been discussed a few more threads down.

I hope DEMAR DORSEY is somewhere on that yellow brick road.

I think we all need to move on from the Hand recruiting hope.  He decided to go elsewhere and should Saban leave Alabama (I dont think there's anyway he will leave) I dont see Hand coming back to us.  He either stays at Alabama or he moves with Saban.

The ship has sailed people.  Time to let go.

As you would undoubtedly assume, Burnt Orange Nation is updating stories by the hour at this point as this Board Of Regents meeting tomorrow approches. Their coverage to date is well-summarized here - (LINK).

Of note, Brown does have to be in Austin for a 10 AM press conference regarding their bowl game against Oregon, but as they say in this article, it is almost a certainty very little of the questions will probably be about the game. According to their story, ESPN is also saying that - if anything happens - he wants to tell the players first, but Regents meeting isn't until later in the day, I would assume based on this.

They also talk about the growing discomfort that some Alabama officials apparently have with Saban still having failed to sign his extension.

Talk to The Hand all you want but he ain't coming back.  We all know why he made his decision and when and it didn't have anything to do with Michigan's outstanding academics.  This was purely a football choice.  He ain't go to Alabama to play school.

If I'm a Texas fan, I'd think I'd prefer Lovie to Saban. He is from Texas, has won at the highest levels, has 10+ years experience in the college ranks and is loved by his former players. Plus he doesn't come with the "shadiness" that surrounds Saban.

It is easy for a coach to not have "shadiness" when they have only been in the NFL.

Also, the NCAA no longer cares about shadiness. Schools probably shouldn't either. Unless a report gets spoon-fed to them by a media outlet, they do nothing.

If Texas misses on the big names reported on early.  I would look at someone like Gary Pinkel. He knows the Big XII.  Knows Texas recruiting and he has done a hell of a job with Missouri.  I think Pinkel is a great plan B for UT if they miss on their superstar plan A guys.

How was Sabans record at MSU compared to Dantonios? HE did fine jumping to LSU and Bama.He locked down LA and Alabama for recruits there  and will do that in Texas plus steal Les miles best guys. I still think Sabans gone to Texas there are just some guys that love to build and there are alot of idiots not happy with him at Bama because of this year. Dont forget the wife likes Texas also.

it will be for the pros.   I still think he has something to prove to himself there.  He can't do any better than he's done in college, and he may be sick of dealing with the 'bama freaks.  Maybe Washington??? after Shanahan departs.

not for Texas.  I think he's going to the NFL.  Just can't see Saban sucking up to all the rich folk at Texas.  He's too much of a total control freak and I think all the ass-kissin' he'd have to do to the boosters that pay him all that money would get in the way of coaching.

Austin is a sooo much better place than Tuscaloosa, but if Saban ain't happy there, he'll be less happy in Austin.  He just isn't the cowboy boot lickin' type.

The only thing Saban hasn't accomplished is win in the NFL.  He's competeitve ego-maniac.  I think he sees Pete Carroll's success and Harbaugh's and wants to prove that he can win anywhere in any league.  The NFL is the destination.  My guess is Washington and it will happen at the end of the NFL regular season.

Shanahan will end upat Houston and the Texas job...not sure.
