Terrence Shannon Jr is on Campus

Heads up that Terrence Shannon Jr is on campus as we speak. Thought by many to be the best transfer player available, Shannon would slide into the 2 for Michigan next year. Would be a big fish to reel in!

Texas Tech star Terrence Shannon Jr. to transfer; Kentucky ...

Here is my useless comment of the day.  I always think of the Beastie Boys when you post because of the song “The Maestro” which mentions Mannix, Barnaby Jones, and Columbo.  It is a joy to recall that song so thank you.

So someone recap for me.

If they offer Terrence a scholly- what needs to happen? Is that under the assumption that 1 of Houstan, Diabate, and Dickinson are leaving? What's if all three want to come back?

I would imagine 1 of the 3 are going and the coaching staff is aware of that but if not I would imagine that either Jace or Jett loses their scholarship due to an unfortunate administrative error and Juwan gets a raise that is shockingly close to the cost of a full year tuition, room and board, tutoring, and athletic training after taxes while Jace or Jett are welcomed with open arms as a preferred walk on.

Honestly, I'm not so sure.

Maybe a few years ago, when the game was a little different, I would agree.

I actually think Houstan has more potential between the two. Shooting is king in the NBA right now. I don't see Diabate developing into anything more than a serviceable three-point shooter.

Yes, Diabate definitely has more of a post-game and is a lot stronger right now; however, Houstan has shown he can be a lethal shooter.

I don't necessarily buy into this consensus narrative that Diabate has more upside.

Between the two, it's 51/49 in terms of NBA outlook IMO.

You can teach someone to shoot, but you can't teach them athleticism, height, and wingspan. That's the difference. Diabate has everything needed to be an elite defender capable of switching onto almost anyone. Teach him how to shoot, and you've got a very solid NBA player. Houstan didn't even look like an exceptional athlete compared to B1G competition -- especially when it came to driving, attacking the rim, and finishing. He didn't show any quickness or explosion either, like Poole or Levert for example.

Houstan is 6'8, which is really damn tall for a lead 2.

I can see him POTENTIALLY turning into someone like Duncan Robinson as he continues to grow.

It's much easier said than done to "teach someone to shoot." Can he improve? Of course. But his motion is very broken; that is going to take years to undo.

Diabate as a serviceable 3-point shooter with the amount of intangible athleticism he has and ability to guard perimeter and inside is about all most teams could ask for out of a player in the NBA.  ANY team would welcome that with open arms.  Guys like Diabate who are spark plugs to get things going aren't going to show on a stat sheet at the end of the day.

Shooting and defense are "kings" and shooting is a more abundant commodity and also easier to learn/acquire.  Plus, Houstan has only shown to be a good spot up shooter on open shots which won't get you far in the NBA.  He's nowhere near an elite shooter.

Moussa's defense and athleticism give him a better chance as a rim running small ball center.  As someone else mentioned, you can't teach that length and athleticism.

I get that he has more upside but it still makes less sense for him to go in my opinion. He’s nowhere near ready and could catapult himself into the lottery if he makes a big sophomore leap. Hunter on the other hand is much closer to a finished product so in his mind staying another year wouldn’t make as much sense to him.

There are a lot of hoppy long athletic "rim protector" guys who both are drafted on potential and don't make it.  Have to shoot at some point in the NBA if you are not Dennis rodman.  See Doumbouya with pistons.  It's a gamble.

There is nothing unique about what Diabete showed this yr.   There are 20 of him in college basketball.  3 will hit the rest won't.  He could come back and improve but not a huge step and hurt his stock because now he is less of an unknown.  Or improve a lot and be that mid round first.  Just being 6 10 and hoppy doesn't mean much.  So does he have a higher ceiling? Yes due to body. But there are 20 bodies like him every yr with the ceiling.

Meanwhile Duncan without that athleticism has made it.  No one here would have said he had more ceiling than a lot of tall hoppy guys in his draft who busted out.  It's more than just ceiling but what is realistically possible.

I've seen people say he is the best player in the portal, can someone explain why this is? I'm not saying that it's not true, but he averaged 10 points a game, what am I missing here?

He’s a strong perimeter defender on an excellent defensive team, an elite finisher as a spot-up scorer and in transition (per Dylan from UMHoops), and a 38% 3P shooter on low-med volume. Not an excellent play initiator, but has shown flashes. Probably the best athlete in the portal. And he was an Academic All-American. That’s a very good player and likely a strong cultural fit.

I've sought out and watched a few of his tapes. He is a very sound, versatile player-is not spectacularly good but does pretty much everything well. What I like best about him is that he competes like hell, has excellent composure and he wants to have the ball in his hands when the game is on the line-and this is all very good. He is a lot like our other Terr(a)nce with a bit more athleticism.

Is he the best of the hundreds in the portal???????????

If he is an elite, shut-down perimeter/wing defender and an efficient scorer, he could easily be the best available.  That mix is very hard to find and incredibly valuable. Shane Battier was those two things and is widely regarded by the metrics folks as one of the best players of all time, or certainly the most underrated.  Really good long-form read about it here: https://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/15/magazine/15Battier-t.html

Anyway, the value of defense, especially a versatile wing defender is never appreciated enough.  The drop off in defense from Wagner to Houstan was the biggest reason Michigan was A LOT worse this year than last year.

It's always difficult to find tape that gives you a clue about the summation of a player's ability...but there are some larger, more full-game-like tapes that define him a bit better. Terrence is a big, strong, athletic player with a decent basketball IQ who is not afraid of the bright lights-even wants to have the ball in his hands when the game is on the line...and this is good-very good. He would be a seasoned player who would both fit well and be needed on this roster

My understanding is that it all has to do with his intended major and how many credits that department would accept to an equivalent at Michigan. In order to maintain his class standing, he would need have a minimum number of credits to be considered making progress toward graduating, and might require him to take some summer classes to reach that threshold.

Not sure if serious…..to rehash……

it has never really been that transfers cannot get admitted to UM.  It has been more like:  “Welcome.  By the way, only X of your credits will transfer to Michigan.  Hope you didn’t plan on graduating any time soon.”

Yes - not all these athletes are aiming to get a degree, but this may also affect the academic progress required by the NCAA to remain eligible.  (I am not certain on that point.)

This is why Grad transfers - which need admittance but have no credits to transfer - are common while conventional transfers like Shea Paterson are not.  This is a U of M issue not tied specifically to athletics.

Its not the entry level classes. Say he's a history major and because he was at TT he took a class called "History 204 - History of Texas", and Michigan doesn't have anything in their course catalog called "History of Texas", well then they aren't going to count that. If there are enough of those, he will fall below the required # of credits to be eligible. NCAA requires you stay on pace to graduate. If he has 90 credits at TT and only 70 transfer, well now he's ineligible.
