Honestly, this is pretty standard for ND. I wasn't surprised at all. They always get bit by a small-conference or non-blue blood team at home. Last year they lost to Cincinnati (who turned out to be legit good) but also sweat out a close win against Tulsa (they lost to Tulsa at home in 2010). In the past 15 years or so they've dropped a lot of these games: they've lost at home to Syracuse, UConn, Duke, South Florida and Navy (numerous times). This is just their Return to Glory!

She's probably now a regional director of sales for some Big Pharma outfit.

Also, when can we retire "To hell with Notre Dame!" ? It has less impact with every additional use and it's from a semi-disgraced former coach.

Brian Kelly may have been a dick but he won a lot more than he lost, even making NC game and playoffs. Plus, he worked his way up from GVSU to CMU to Cincy.

Freeman looks like a guy who should have been learning as a HC at a MAC or Mountain West school, at least for a few years. ND is not the place to learn on the job. Charlie got lucky that Tyrone left him a QB and a lot of talent. Once he had to recruit his own QB (Jimmy C) he found things got ugly soon.

One can only hope the meltdown continues - hoping for losses from UNC, BYU, USC, Clemson, and Cuse. 5-7 and no bowl (unless something weird happens with the 6 win teams).

Cal is a crapshoot since they haven't played anyone, but I expect ND to bounce back this weekend.

As for recruiting, they will ALWAYS get a plethora of 4 and 5 star guys. It's guys like CJ Carr that I want to see waver and come back into the fold.

I can list four ND quarterbacks in the past 30 years that have been at least decent -- Jack Coan (Wisconsin mostly developed him), Ian Book, Brady Quinn (meh) and Ron Powlus (double meh).  But that's about it.

Notre Dame has not had great success at the QB position in a long, long time.  I guess CJ Carr seeks to be that guy but there's not a good historical precedent, at least in recent times that most people can remember.

I always root for Black coaches, so I feel bad for Freeman. And I don't think that a close loss to OSU and a wipeout against Marshall prove that Freeman can't coach. (Lloyd could coach, even if he was a bit of a lemon-sucker; he lost a couple of doozies.)

But a down decade for ND in which, eventually, they join the B1G with their lizard tails between their legs. . . I am down for that.

I don't think anyone is doubting Freeman's coaching abilities. I do think it's fair to question whether he's up to the task of taking over a program as steeped in tradition and scrutinized as much as ND in his first HC go-round. That is the point that tybert is making; usually a hot-shot coordinator such as Freeman has to spend a minute cutting his teeth at a G5 or lesser P5 before making the jump to the top tier.

I always liked Marcus, but I did think this was too much too soon.  The biggest proof is that he keeps hiring his old teammates instead of established position coach.  It really shows by his retaining Tommy Rees.....also looks like their OL coach has issues also.

Bux, respectfully, their OL coach shouldn’t be in the list.  It’s OL talent development  - and what has happened in OL recruiting over the past four years.  Their OL coach - who was there for about 8 years - returned as OL coach after several seasons in the NFL.

While in his first stint - he was turning out NFL draftees every year.

The challenge - is recovering from less than ideal recruiting and player development over the past four years.  And, as Michigan fans - it’s something I believe we can relate to.  Last season - was the first solid OL Michigan had under Harbaugh’s tenure - and, I think the foundation is finally there for continued success in the future.

Agree with both of these - ND should have waited for Fickell to free up after the playoffs and hired him.  He is clearly more than ready to make that step.

Freeman would have been a great candidate for Cincy.  Instead, ND took the shortcut and went with a guy that had no experience as a head coach and only spent 1 year in South Bend.

Hopefully it fails (from a Michigan recruiting perspective).  Freeman will end up as Bama's D-Coordinator in 2 years before getting his next coaching gig when he's ready.

Zhou, I don’t think there’s much to infer - but, as I noted last week - ND’s offense is predictable - more run than pass.  And, ND’s D might be “ok” - so, what does that say about the Bucks O?  Personally, I was expecting more from the Bucks O in their game against ND.

The Bucks D may be talking longer to grasp Knowles D than many think.  The Bucks visit to EL will be worth watching.  And, the Badgers visit to the Shoe might be fun to watch too - I would guess that Wisconsin game will be an indication of the Bucks DL.

If the Bucks lose to the Badgers, they will probably take it out on the Spartans, but if the Bucks beat the Badgers then the Bucks might look passed the Spartans to the Bucks matchup with the Lions a couple of weeks later.  Then again, if the Spartans are undefeated, they may have a lot of incentive to try to beat the Bucks to gain the upper hand on the Bucks in the Big Ten East.  My guess is that the Bucks will beat all of those scrubs, and that the Bucks will be ready when the Bucks play the Wolverines in The Game.

Bucks.
