This is Fielding Yost. This is Bo. This is Michigan.
This is Fielding Yost. This is Bo. This is Michigan.
Yes but stupid students couldn't careless about any of that. They want Pop Evil, Jay Z and Kanye rocking out. As if The Game wasn't entertainment
is certainly not welcome in the big house, i will boo if brandon puts them on the field
Whoa, whoa, I'm in no way in favor of a J/'Ye halftime show, and Watch the Throne is not at all good, but putting these guys in the same sentence with Pop Evil is like comparing the Rolling Stones to that kid who raps in the Pregaming with Pat videos.
What don't you like about Watch the Throne? I think it's pretty good.
Frank Ocean saves a couples songs...but it's mostly terrible...especially Kanye. If you want J and Ye just throw in Reasonable Doubt and College Dropout, then you will se what's wrong with Watch the Throne.
Well, you're right that it's not on par with each of their respective classics but that's why those albums are classics. I mean, NaS isn't ever gonna come close to Illmatic again but I still like him. WTT is pretty solid all around and New Day is one of the better hip hip songs I've heard.
"New Day" and "Lift Off" are both fantastic.
Reasonable doubt is a certifiable hip hop classic, but both of these dudes have sold out harder than Ice Cube. I would puke if these lame rappers performed at halftime. I am a Hip hop fan, (def early 90's stuff, rap now sucks), and I would never want any rappers performing at Michigan Stadium, we are Michigan for Christ sakes.
Watch the Throne was terrible, it should have been called Watch us Bone.
Michigan would be lucky to have artists of that calibur preform. The Watch the Thrown album covers a wide spectrum lyrically from the godly to the party, from the braggadocios to the socially conscious . Listen to Murder to Excellence, Welcome to the Jungle, New Day . How in the world are these two sell outs? Just because you make lots of money does not make you a sell out. They still put out quality music and Kanye has a history of doing things that would make him less marketable and are musically out of the norm for a rapper. Thats not what sellouts do, these guys set trends.
But I honestly expected a lot better after My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I guess that album would be fairly hard to top though.
After My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy it's a massive let down. Listening to Watch the Throne is like watching the Miami Heat play basketball after watching LeBron take an otherwise horrible team to the verge of a championship. You desperately want the most talented guy in the world to take over, but he defers to the guy who's like top 5, but a significant step down out of respect for his past accomplishments. And so the whole becomes less than the sum of the parts.
Watch the Throne isn't bad in the same way the Heat aren't bad- relative to the competition, but for what it should be it's almost nauseating.
... are much stupider than the stupid students when I was a stupid student at Michigan(!) We would never have let this stupidity fly(!)
Apparently you forgot about the time Gary Moeller invited Haddaway and UB40 to play at halftime back in the early '90's. It was epic.
Against Jay Z and Kanye but you find The Game entertaining? Must be a westcoast rap fan...
The Game is one of the most boring rappers in "the game". He def is no Aceyalone or Above the Law.
we should definitely not do this because you conjecture about bo's attitude towards halftime shows.
damn those "stupid students" and their desire to hear popular music at a football game. "Real" Michigan fans like you know better. keep fighting the good fight.
Lemme tell ye' bruthar! No tru' Scotsman would e'er allow such a thing ter desecrate tha hallowed grounds o' Michigan Stadium. No sir! If'n ye' think tha'll e'er happen, yer bum's oot tha windae!
Relax. Even though I would love to see this (and, for that matter, would like to see Brandon allow some big act to play the Big House at some point in the future) there is no way the atheltic dept is going to shell out the dough for this.
Also, from a logistical standpoint. a guy I know who used to work for the Athl Dept until recently once told me that they had been approached before about having a concert in the stadium. One of the biggest (and apparently its a big one) issues is that the only way in or out of the field is the tunnel and the tunnel is very small and would be a logistical nightmare to get all the stage equipment through.
There is no dobut, no lingering suspicion, no little bit of gray area, that IMO this is a HORRIBLE idea.
Now how about the White stripes?
They broke up.
Oh, no. They blew up.
This would be absolutely off the charts for recruiting, but I don't see why Jay Z would be interested. (I'd guess Kanye, as a giant attention whore, could probably be gotten.)
Anyway I think this is one where you'd have to ignore the whining of the purists and pay attention to what this would do for the brand. I mean, I object to the corporate monetization of Michigan football in general, but if the effect could be to make us the bar none number 1 brand in the country...hell, let's do it.
I understand your objections, but this came to mind as a possible compromise if this does happen (which I don't think it will). What if the band and Jay Z/Kanye collaborated on something? I think the band would enjoy that and I think students would really enjoy that. I submit the following video as something I found cool that also relates:
If we could get strippers like that it would be better than Jay Z........
Yes recruits come to Michigan where maybe you can sit in the locker room while music groups perform outside. Sure you won't be able to hear it but you'll be close by!
First, I agree that this would be phenomenal for recruiting, which by itself would be enough for me to support this. Second, shouldn't we care what the students want? I can't stand the constant push-back against "new" traditions that appeal to younger fans (mascots, recorded music, etc) in the name of keeping every tradition imaginable for the sake of the older fans.
FWIW, I logged on and signed the petition. Thankfully my username and password still work after all these years.
Negging for posting an honest opinion that many people here share? Bush-league.
Dude, I even kinda agree with you on SOME of your points (definitely not on mascots, seriously, fuck mascots), but if you complain about getting negged, you're just going to get further negged.
Please god let this happen
awesome. I don't understand the negativity. Is it these 2 artists or any artist performing in the Big House at halftime? BTW, Please don't lump in Pop Evil with Jay/ Kanye.
You're commenting on a blog where people panic when we talk about possibly wearing white pants. You think those people listen to rap?
I'd be open to white pants, but not after Labor Day.
It's just too bad that the football season starts on Labor Day weekend.
I know your not refering to Jay Z and Kanye as "Artists" com'on man your better than that..
Herpy derp mcflerp derp.
You remember that last Super Bowl halftime show that was awesome and didn't take way too long? Yeah I don't either. Every player says they hate having to wait longer to get back to the game I think it's a stupid idea. Concerts and football games are perfectly fine as separate events.
GET OFF MY LAWN YOU DAMN KIDS!
It'll never happen, Michigan Stadium is not big enough to hold Kanye's ego.
and it's the Michigan Marching Band. Now if they want to play a Jay-Z/Kanye show, that would be ok. But no rappers. And no Pop Evil.
i disagree, i think Kanyesus should perform before the game, at halftime, and after the game
I think the Michigan game should take place during intermission of the Kanyesus concert, time permitting of course.
The bad needs to get smarter during the game. They shouldn't be playing Temptation after a 3rd down while the team is clearly going for it on 4th down. This induces students into chanting "you suck" while we get a 4th down converted on our assess.
Exactly, it just seems like a jinx
I'd rather see Kanye and Jay-Z (I'm a Jigga hater but that's a different story) than listen to the MBB play Lady fucking Gaga. That shit cray! And embarassing. C'mon man!
Sure, maybe if the marching band played Jay Z or Kanye songs. But I don't even think a school like Oregon or Penn State would attempt something like this at halftime.
Jay-Z or Kanye fan, but this would kind of awesome. It's a good gimmick. Just tell them they'll get to perform in front of 114,000 + people and they have a small interest. This would definitely be the biggest story in sports for a couple months. Everybody would benefit from it. But it would also be a logistical nightmare, and will never happen.
Just signed. This would be so cool.
NO. No no no no no. No. No. Worst idea ever.
So when Kanye/Jay Z don't work out, what group will Brandon actually choose, and pitch it as even better than Kanye/JayZ? And how much will everyone hate it?
It will be awesome, especially when Denard joins in with a "Tick, tock, you don't stop!"
What's the deal with Marvin Robinson? I haven't seen him play the last two weeks?
He's been out scouting possible performers for the Ohio halftime show.
He's been lead salesman of Michigan jerseys in ohio. I here he's doing so well that they may promote him to midwest-Michigan-jersey-sales-manager
Halftime shows are lame as shit. No way I'm paying more for my tickets so we can start buying halftime entertainers.
Would it be alright if a popular artist performed inside Michigan Stadium as a venue? That would be great. But for a half-time show? They'd only have ~20 minutes to work with before they'd have to clear the field for second-half warmups. So... no. Awful idea.
would be great. How great would it be if they incorporated the band in their performance. Remember "Dave Chappelle's Block Party" Kanye utilizes a small college band to the fullest!
Seriously? We're calling him 'Ye now? He's a goddamn toolbag who isn't nearly as talented as he thinks he is. He's a legend in his own mind.
I'm confused as to where you stand on this.
Yes, Timothy, because abbrieviating one's name is a sure sign of being a toolbag.
And I suggest you give several listens to Twisted Fantasy.
Where did I say that's what makes him a toolbag? Him being a toolbag is what makes him a toolbag. I'm just surprised to see him referred to as "Ye". He's a douchbag, any way you slice it.
I don't really get why everyone seems to adopt this stance about rap. I don't particularly love classic rock, but I don't make posts like "Oh, we're calling them the STONES now? Since when do THOSE GUYS deserve a nickname?" I can jam to "Beast of Burden" now and then and I respect them as musicians and artists. Why can't people afford rap the same dignity?
Whatever moniker Kanye chooses to go by, he's undeniably one of the best in the hip-hop game now. Kanye does unpredictable and exciting things with his beats and his albums, and Twisted Fantasy was a fantastic work that really delved into Kanye's feelings about himself, his career, and the music industry as he sees it.
Whether you like rap or not, saying things like this is just being a jerk.
I like a lot of rap, just not Kanye West. You shouldn't make broad assertions like that without some evidence to back up what you're saying. Don't paint me as something I most definitely am not. Got it?
Your Rolling Stones analogy is way off too. It would be like calling Kanye West "Kanye", which is whatever, but thinking he's generally regarded such that calling him "Ye" is acceptable is a little much. I think he's a gigantic douchebag. Comparing himself to Jesus (no Jesus freak here either) and actually believing in what he's saying when he says it? Wow.
edit: yeah, nice you downvoted it so it would collapse so nobody could see me defend myself. dick.
Read my edit on my collapsed post. Assholes. Don't make me out to be something I'm not.
Kanye sucks. Jay and Em would be great though. It wont happen but thatd be awesome if it did. This would be great for recruiting, especially if we beat tsio's ass. Ya im lookin at you Mr Dunn.
Despite my typical GTFOML stance, I'd be okay with this as a one time thing if and only if the following conditions were met:
1) All background music is provided by the MMB
2) Kanye is immediately sniped by the dudes on top of the suites if, outside the actual lyrics of his song, he opens his mouth to say anything political or self-aggrandizing.
no way DB allows this
If there's one person that probably WOULD allow this, it's Dave Brandon.
This is the Midwest, we don't want Hove here wearing his stupid Yankee hat. Solo Kanye or Lupe, that is all
they're from Chicago right?
As much as it sucks (I like Detroit a lot better) Chicago is basically the Capital of Big Ten country
The stadium isn't built for this ... football isn't about rap and R&B. Not to mention, bands and singers at college football games makes no sense. Save that for the NFL venue please and bring on the marching bands.
football isnt about rap and r&b go ask the players what they listen to?
bet its rap... or r&b that they listen to most.
Id buy extra tickets just so i could dance and rock out in my isle.
Why would you want to buy an extra ticket to rock out for 1, maybe 2 songs? That would be the worst waste of money ever.
because i can... thats why... dont worry about what i do worry you... at the end of the day i promise the sun will set and rise again.... you'll be just fine..
If you wanted to pay money to listen to kanye and hova, why not go to a concert and hear more than 1 song?
I thought the University of Michigan Athletic Marketing Department told me that the players liked "In The Big House" by Pop Evil, not Rap or R&B.
I think it would be cool and I am a 36 yo white guy.
let an ex-free base addict crash at your house for a few months.
Bad idea, students.
And it would have be more like the Michigan Marching Band with special guest Eminem. Which might actually be doable.
This reminds me does anybody else remember a halftime show last year where the drum major tried rapping along to, or am I creating this memory in my mind.
I was at the lions thanksgiving game last year. I remember getting excited because kid rock was performing at halftime. They took 10 minutes to set up the stage, he played one song, and then they took everything down. It sucked.
Which is why this won't happen: all of the seats at this game are already sold, so there is no profit to be made.
I think the midday start and possibly frigid temperatures alone make this an unlikely scenario. Super Bowl and many bowl game performances of this grandure take place at night.
Also, given the time it would take for the set-up/tear-down of the stage, would the B10 even allow something like this?
I approve as long as Dave Brandon will sign stating that Neil Diamond and Journey will never be played in the Big House again. I could deal with these dudes rapping, halftime is currently an incredible waste of time anyway.
I'm pretty sure halftime wasn't created for our entertainment.
What do you have against Jorney? Have stopped believing?
As a Michigan grad with his college days a ways behind him, yeah that wouldn't be something I'd be excited about.
If I was one of the many 16-18 year old potential recruits who will be at that game deciding if I wanted to attend Michigan...well that wouldn't hurt their case.
Honestly, if the band director would just realize that having intricate sections of music with piccolos and flutes involved in your performance rather than trying to maximize your sound (think Notre Dame, their band was more audible and they were on the other corner of the field from me) is stupid. I know the band is very talented and using different sections to accentuate sound can be cool... but only in an auditorium, not in the Big House, the sound doesn't carry.
Or that choosing quiet songs by The Beatles may not be the best way to spend 15 minutes.
if you would just realize that not only does Notre Dame field every last member of their band regardless of how godawful they sound, but the band director has little to no control over the instrumentation of his ensemble, then you wouldn't make stupid-ass comments like this.
No need to be so ornery. My bad, it isn't the band director who dictates the instrumentation (i assumed it was). Whoever does it needs to rethink about how the sound carries within the Big House. Also, I love the Beatles as much as the next person, but like the above poster said selecting songs that just don't resonate just doesn't seem logical. I did not insult the band, I still stand by the fact that they're a very talented group, I just wish I could hear them.
It would be cool if accompanied by the MMB, but I doubt they would want to start arranging a bunch of music this far into the season that they weren't planning on.
But it's not like Jay and Kanye have any sort of ties to Michigan, and I don't think Jay will want to come to Michigan after the Tigers knock the Yanks out of the playoffs.
One question: why not Eminem? He's from Michigan. He also has songs with Jay-Z (Renegade) and Kanye (Forever), though they might need to invite Lil Wayne and Drake if they wanted Forever.
Separately, they wouldn't want that sort of language in the stadium.
1) The band would never do it.
2) It will take away attention from The Game and The Rivalry
3) It will be too cold
The fact of the matter is, EMU brings big names (that appeal to young people) to their Convocation Center and UM doesn't really do a great job in that respect. This is not something to take up with the Athletic Department. This is something to take up with the Major Events Office in the Michigan Union that handles Hill Auditorium, Power Center, etc. The student who started this didn't really do his homework on the most realistic way to make this happen and is in all likelihood just doing this for attention for an upcoming election or something.
It's not the Super Bowl. Thanks for the laugh whoever started this petition.
We oughta get Eminem then...
Speaking of students...it seems like they are showing up later and later for games with many empty seats...more so than when I was a student. Disappointing.
I think part of it is the fact that the weather felt like early November for some of those games against inferior opponents and all the kickoffs were at noon. Or everyone is just getting drunker. I'd be willing to bet that coming off 3 terrible seasons contributes to that effect as well.
from the perspective of students, the rest of the stadium seems to dog it on the crowd noise except on third down. Don't hate on the heart of the stadium.
As someone who sits with "the rest of the stadium," I would agree.
Trust me, the noon starts aren't helping
Anything that diminishes the importance of the GAME, and the two best bands in the land, gets a "no way, jose" from me.
Over/under on likelihood of one of the petition writers wearing a neon Tri-Delt hat backwards?
Why would they care about halftime? I don't think they make it there until the 3rd quarter. I agree that this is likely started by students who have no real interest in football and would much rather see a concert with their ticket.
I'm starting to get sick of all the student-bashing that goes on here. Did you ever consider the fact that even students that show up early and scream their throats raw every game might listen to rap music too?
Crazy thought I know, but given the fact that the loudest most of the general fanbase gets during the games is yelling at people to sit down in front of them, maybe you should show a little appreciation for the students that make The Big House such a tough place to play.
I actually sit in the student section, I was referencing his joke about the sorority girls that don't actually care about football and are there because it is a social occasion and nothing more.
trolled hard with a car-song show.
As long as the MMB accompanies it, don't you think the students in band would get a huge kick out of playing for these guys? Maybe not the entire halftime show, but popping out for a surprise number or two. I think it would just be fun...we're trying to break the streak of losing to Ohio, why not break the streak of traditional halftime shows for some good karma?
Plus, it'll be damn cold, and it might get the crowd even more pumped up for the second half (not that we're gonna need it, after all, it's Ohio).
I understand some of the concerns, but it's just music, and it would be cool for most people involved.
If the crowd isn't pumped for a game against OSU, having Jesus perform halftime miracles wouldn't make it happen, let alone Jay Z and Kanye. The alumni in the stands wouldn't have the slightest idea of who they are anyways.
I'd rather see Lupe and Eminem just because of their Midwest roots, but by no means would I complain if we got Jay-Z and Kanye.
For any of my friends still at UM. Sadly, I found one. She has already been thoroughly scolded and been put on friend-probation for her violation (although I guess it's not all too unexpected from her: she did transfer from Notre Dame).
Why? I want to know why someone who think this was necessary, and at the OSU game, no less? Will we not be stoked as it is (not that Kanye orJay-Z would get me stoked, for this is when I was choose to take an extended bathroom break)?
There's. A. Band. Here.
clap, clap, clap-clap-clap
Anyone saying this is the worst idea ever clearly just does not understand how incredible this would be for recruiting. Forget the players in the locker room all the recruits visiting would get to see the game plus a concert. It would be incredible, will never happen but come on people i'd sacrifice the band at halftime for a commitment from dunn.
For patent commercialism? Blasphemy, sir!
We already sacrificed our dignity when we started piping in Pop Evil.
Never sacrifice the victors.
And why would the band have to go. He, integrate the band into the show and end the freaking thing with kanye and jay-z singing the victors WITH the band. Talk about recruiting cred. That would be amazing.
Have other college teams done this in the past? I'm not sure how the older generation of uofm fans would feel listening to Jay-Z/Kanye at half-time. It may be a little awkward...
Maybe this is what is needed to get the first row of the student section to actually turn around for the halftime show instead of sitting with their backs turned to the field on the railings all the way from section 23 to 31.
Not saying I'm for this happening, but if those two wanted to perform at half time of the Ohio game, rejecting them would be the equivalent of rejecting The Beatles in 1969.
And HO-LY SHIT: Recruiting!
I don't like it any more than I liked this young whippersnappers on my lawn, but you raise a good point. That would be a huge recruiting boost. Add the "cool" factor of having these two megastars perform a halftime show - probably the Most hyped halftime show ever for a cfb game - to our academics, campus, tradition and the whole winningest program in college football (!!) and it would be pretty hard not to land just about any recruit willing to travel north.
Imagine how awesome Kanye and J would look rocking a Denard jersey...I'm 100% serious. This would make The Game this year comparable to the ND game
It would be ok. Never going to happen though.
There would be too much "yeah...uhhh....yeah....gnomewhutimsayin, yeah ugh.......".
Snoop Dogg on the other hand I would have no objections to.
Would it make us money? Ye....wait, hold on...
*is passed a note, puts reading glasses on*
This would be during the Ohio game. That game will be a sellout no matter what. We don't need this.
Let's add that one to the list:
yes lets just cost the university hundreds of thousands of dollars, and make all of the old people there kill themselves.
had their undergrad memories, why not let the students make some of their own?
Of course this will never happen, but if it did I think it would be an awesome thing to do on the part of the University. Hell, even if they invited them to the game and had them say "Go Blue" at halftime a la Patrick Stewart in '06, that would be pretty awesome and fun for students.
HALFTIME IS FOR MARCHING BANDS - THIS IS NOT THE NFL.
Yes, I was shouting. Get off my lawn.
If this were a fair and just world, Michigan would make this happen and would send the bill to the person who started the petition.
I would bet that if a petition was made against Kanye and Jay Z playing at halftime that more people would sign it.
When Snyder was announced as the commencement speak the UPetition petition had something like 10,000 signees. This has 1,500. The students don't care that much.
Yep. Because those conservative students don't deserve to hear Snyder speak.
Nevermind that liberals have had their way in the classroom for four years, how dare a successful man speak who politically disagrees with those students.
It's sad to see partisanship taken this far. Grow up, if you can't listen respectfully to someone from the other side clearly you learned absolutely nothing in college.
Students were pissed about Snyder because he had just announced huge cuts to um funding, didn't follow through on the Michigan promise money. The students were pissed because for some reason education is always the first to get cut despite being a key part of society. You don't invite a man to come talk weeks after his actions hurt your school
Next thing you know they'll petition for the President to speak at Commencement.
Important message for Mgoblog users, don't neg this just because you don't want the concert, that is what comments are for. this user brought relevant, and potentially meaningful information to mgoblog. that isn't the area to downvote it just because you don't want the concert,
Bring in Tupac.
Paging Michael Scott "No!" GIF
Mike Martin wants it.
Bring in the Dragon Lady from basketball halftime games. I'd get a kick from hearing that music on the loudspeakers.
Why would Brandon split the profits with rock/rap whatever bands. Is the stadium going to be less full without them? Isn't it already going to be on TV. What does having a band play get you monetarily to offset the monumental cost and headaches of production?
Not everything that's potentially positive about something like this is measurable. If people love the show, and it's memorable, etc. how much does that count for? Not saying it's worth it for this in particular, but I mean there'd be no reason to ever go above the normal call if the logic is, "we'd sell out anyway".
That's a good argument if you weren't talking about a game with plenty of history and intangibles already built in. If you wanted to do this for an OOC game under the lights I'd have no problem with it. But not for the GAME.
but the students who are petitioning for this are idiots. As much as I love rap and think these two are at or near the top of the game, that is not what The Game is about and never should be. No rapper, rock band, group or anything besides the marching bands should grace halftime. It is called The Game for a reason and NO GIMMICKS ARE NEEDED.
I luhhh me some Jay-Z and Kanye..but what does this mean, no MMB??? hmmm c'mon..
I tried to teach ni**as how to be kings
And all they ever wanted to be was soldiers
So the love is gone, Til blood is drawn
So we no longer wear the same uniform
Fu*k you squares, The circle got smaller
The castle got bigger, The walls got taller
And truth be told after all that said
Ni**as still got love for you
Arby's Roast Beef Band featuring Dancing Curly Fries or GTFO.
The idea is ridiculous. HOWEVA, if I had to chose I'd rather it be Kanye and Common. Jay is just an aweful, aweful rapper.....aweful!
I take it you are in awe of him?
DOWN IN FRONT!!!!
If anyone is rapping in the Big House its gonna be Weezy with Denard. IS IT THE DREADS?!
I don't know who either of these artists are. Does this officially put me in the "old man" category? Do I need to start yelling at youngsters to "Get off my lawn!"?
