Hopefully he's Mack Brown's replacement for the "successful, old coach with zero broadcast television experience" job. Mack is terrible.

"Well I think these guys are gonna have a good chance to win today if they can out score their opponents" - actual Mack Brown quote

The funny thing about that is that Steve Spurrier spent a considerable amount of time building up goodwill with the media in South Carolina as well as in the SEC in general (not liked everywhere, but liked enough in places where it counted), so the lack of roasting over this decision and, in some cases, concern for his health or other reasons which typically precipate sudden departures, is a totally expected result.

That being said, it does leave the Gamecocks with an interim coach and - for the first time in a while - a lack of familiar leadership in some respects. It definitely can't be easy for them to make that adjustment on the fly in the season.

Would you rather he stay at USC even when he knows he is done and his give a damn is broken?  You need to be all in to be a football coach, even a guy like Spurrier who was famously dug at other coaches for working too hard.  This way the team has a coach who is all in and the administration has a jump (although Sark and the other USC kind of ruined this) on the hiring process.

"This guy needs to stop acting liking someone is always pissing in his face" "Nothing more annoying than a guy who is always feeling dissrespected, what kind of complex is that anyway?"

I think Spurrier is entertaining and a great coach.  But what's up with him just bailing on his team midseason and going on a press tour?  Not only did he bail but instead of being private and trying to let things blow over he's gonna go on ESPN and try to explain and rationalize why he left his team high and dry.

That's sort of been his style. Spencer Hall covered it pretty well for SB Nation, but apparently he just viewed himself as ineffective. He has a track record of being pretty mercenary in his approach to the business of coaching, and I guess he just decided it was time to stop.

Childers, Neuheisel show on Sirius College Sports radio, He called in on the spot and did a candid interview on the Full Ride show, basically he said he fired himself and that his voice was no longer relevant in the locker room. He wanted to give the kids a chance to redeem their season.

When you've done as much as Spurrier you'vegot to respect his decision, at least he's not hanging around like Bowden, Beamer, JoePa and their ilk. I believe that if he thought he could make a significant contribution to South Carolina's on-field success he'd have stuck around.

That being said he also stated he's not retiring, He's probably gonna coach offense at the high school level.

Personally, I'm going to miss me some Hatin' Ass Spurrier, he's one of those personalities that make the game of college football the great unique game it is...
