Borges called a decent game today. He went away from the run too much though, IMO, and the bootlegs need to stop. Devin is still clearly not fully in the game mentally and we had a few key drops that stalled drives.

I think he may have been trying to stay the naked bootlegs need to stop, (especially on short yardage), which I wholeheartedly agree with.

The question then is whether Borges and the rest of the staff is going to actually internalize what was done well and figure out how to incorporate it and build on it in the coming weeks. He has shown us all year (and last, especially against OSU!) that he's not very good at doing that.
November 16th, 2013 at 7:32 PM ^
I don't think it was so much that he went away from the run too much. I think he went to the deep ball too much, but we needed to keep passing so the running game could work.

Brandstatter was mentioning that on the radio in the third quarter. He's so used to being harassed, that he feels pressure even when it's not there. Any QB would feel skittish with protection like he's had the last two weeks.

I think some of it has to with the routes being too long. Trying to throw over the top of defense with triple moves, stacked sets, etc. takes time to make the read. They seem to go to quicker throws in OT and it worked.
November 16th, 2013 at 9:00 PM ^
You could see that last week especially. There was one play where Nebraska blitzed and Fitz actually picked it up, but as soon as the defender hit Fitz, Gardner turned and tried to bail, running right into a sack.
It looked like running for a few first downs in the 4th quarter really settled Gardner down today. Hopefully he keeps that up; we won't have shot at Ohio without him playing his best (not that we have a great shot either way).
November 16th, 2013 at 9:36 PM ^
has had the same issue this year.
It happens to the best of them. Can't blame Devin, but hopefully this game helps give him more confidence in the pocket. Hopefully.

Borges still needs to pack his shit now.

Those bashing (not all are being "mean" about it, to be fair) Touissant realize he probably could have gained yardage today as well, when the chances were there? I'm probably pro-Green right now but I don't think Fitz ever had a shot at success this season. Green et. al. were getting nothing before this game just like Fitz was getting nothing.
Edit: Pass protection is something I wasn't thining about typing this, so there's that.
November 16th, 2013 at 7:36 PM ^
The coaches were exceedingly loyal to Fitz after everything he fought through this offseason, but you can only give a guy so many chances. His career is over now. It's Green's turn.

I see your (and others) point but I just don't think there've been any holes to hit hard the past 2 months before today.
The pass pro. was definitely an issue. A big enough one I do think a change needed to be looked at.

Felt good to see M RBs finishing their runs by taking it to tacklers. In particular, Green laying wood to a defender (no 10?) down the sideline was great.
November 16th, 2013 at 7:40 PM ^
Additionally, this was just one game. Let's wait and see if they have success like this again before we bury Fitz. And if we do, then why did it take this long for the coaches to figure this out?

Also, goodbye Fitz. You have to go with Green and Smith from here on out.

This game made it pretty clear to me that we need to put Morris in and move Gardner back to receiver (whether this year or next). I love Gardner and know he's a gamer but he is just not a good qb. He improved throughout the game and there were even a few times he looked off coverage but he continually telegraphs passes and makes bad decisions. He should be much better by now but at this point he is what he is. I'm willing to keep borges around and see what he can do with Morris at the helm.
On a positive note, our oline didn't look like a tire fire and it looks like we found a starting tailback who can block competently and grind out 3-4 yard runs consistently.

I don't know what Shane can do but I'm willing to give it a go. I'm hoping with more consistent qb play, we wouldn't need Shane to do the same thing at the end. If you don't think we were lucky that several of DG's passes didn't get intercepted and taken to the house, then I'd question whether you yourself watched the game.
November 16th, 2013 at 7:53 PM ^
After the way he played in the overtimes, you're now convinced Gardner needs to be moved to WR? What?
November 16th, 2013 at 8:23 PM ^
Yes, I would be in favor (maybe not this year) of putting in morris and switching devin to wr. I'm not sure why it's that difficult to understand, he is not a good quarterback and seems to be regressing. The only thing I can hope is that the two ot td drives give Gardner confidence in the pocket going forward because he sure didn't have it the vast majority of the game.
November 16th, 2013 at 10:04 PM ^
Even if you bought into Morris as the starter next year, I can't see moving Gardner to WR. At that point, QB depth would be unproven Soph, unproven Junior coming off injury and true Freshman. No way you would move out Gardner.
November 16th, 2013 at 8:19 PM ^
would much rather see DG back next year with proper QB coaching, and an effective offensive plan.
we've seen the flashes of what a DG led offense could be, but not the coaching to develop it.
November 16th, 2013 at 8:31 PM ^
I would love it if there were a coaching change-up and suddenly Gardner gets the coaching he deserves to become a pocket presence. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening so I'd personally rather have a qb more suited to Borges's system (which I think we're stuck with).

That could be a reason why we were able to run the ball better.
Hopefully Fitz will be back next week. With all his injuries, I don't think he's the same player he was when he stepped on campus.
November 16th, 2013 at 9:47 PM ^
But the OL was actually creating holes and push early in the game too. The first drive of the game featured quite a few successful runs...it wasn't like the run game appeared out of nowhere in OT.
It sure did help to have an RB who hit defenders hard and drove forward. Green consistently kept churning guys for an extra 2-3 yards...it was refreshing to see.

Yes enjoy that triple OT win against 0-5 in the Big Ten Northwestern. Completely ignore why the game was that close to begin with. Just stop complaining and be grateful that dear leader Borges allows you to watch his incredible offense. He is a guru after all.

I really do think Borges brought all of about 10 plays for this game and ran them over and over and over again.
