Jackson is a 6'10" stretch 4 who averaged 6.5 PPG and 2 RPG while playing 15 MPG for Seton Hall this year. He shot 47% from the field and 38% from 3. While it's unclear what his ceiling is especially as a grad transfer, it's clear he can contribute to this team

Repeating what Brian said on the WTKA segment yesterday, this team needs some actual production from the portal. So far it seems like they are adding a bunch of role players.

Feels similar to MSU Football - they add a bunch of meh transfers (except the lucky NFL RB one time) who never start or really contribute at their previous school and they think "but he has a high ceiling and was once a good recruit" or "he transferred from Georgia" but you see them play and understand why they never got much PT in the first place while MSU ends up 5-7. Michigan Football is at least bringing in multi-year starters, captains, or PFF darlings and shocker they fit right in.

Not sure who else is leaving from UM basketball's current roster and the portal shopping is far from done, but they are not going to have a bounce back year loading up on Nimari Burnetts or Tray Jacksons.

I am also skeptical on Love, a guy who apparently destroyed the locker room chemistry at UNC and had a worse Torvik ORTG this year than Terrence Williams! Took over 7 threes per game and made 29% of them.... not great.

If they add Love prepare for some serious ISO hero ball and frankly, that doesn't really move the excitement needle too much either.

Jayden Reed was their best non RB offensive player who portaled in.  Jacoby Windmon was their 2nd best defensive player who portaled in as well.  They got a starting tackle in Hurst (not a great player but for them a good get)  Those are 3 I can think off the top of my head on top end.  Maliq Carr was a decent TE, Bruhle is a decent LB.   Dantoni left a pretty barren roster; most of the guys transferring out are going to MAC type programs.  Juwan wasn't given a barren roster.

They have had success outside of Walker3.

The rest of your post agree with.

It will take more than this to replace Hunter up front, but 15 minutes per game of a role-player big is better than a 'Just a Shooter' who can't.

so basketball has just become a yearly random assembly of transfers with unknown potential and hope to god they gel together by march? I would definitely not want to coach in college basketball right now. In football picking up or losing a few transfers each year doesnt affect the team that much. Basketball is a completely different game where just one player has a huge impact on the success or decline of a team. How can any team keep consistency with such a fluid impact?

I dont see anyway a team can stay consistent year in year out. As ridiculous as preseason projections are they are about to become even more ridiculous. March madness 2023 was a perfect example. Did anyone give Miami, FAU, San Diego State, or UCONN even a shot at making a final four preseason? the only team ranked preseason was #20 san diego state!

Good depth piece.  If he’s a starter we’re in trouble though.  Tamar Bates still coming? If so we’re pretty much over the limit and would need either Joey not to get an extra year or Kante not to arrive.

People seem down on this but for reference here are Terrance Williams vs Tray Jackson's numbers per 40 minutes:

Williams: 9.2 / 8.8 / 1.3 on 39% from the field, 25% from 3, and 75% from the line

Jackson: 17.9 / 6.1 / 0.5 on 47% from the field, 38% from 3, and 70% from the line

While per 40 isn't a great metric, it could show what Jackson could be capable of with increased minutes

It took injuries to force Juwan to play Reed. Im not sure coaches see what is going on sometimes. Basketball is very lacking in the money ball approach. Any coach that lets a player shoot a 26 footer because its tied and "why not we can just got to OT" loses credibility with me. Its mind numbing how often that happens.

Sorry, I just simply can’t get excited about anything basketball related right now after the season we just had. They’re gonna need to give me some space for a few months

My take?

  • If this is a depth piece to beef up the bench? I love it!

  • If he's being brought in to be the starting 4? ......Yikes
  • I fear this will only make the logjam at the 4 spot even worse UNLESS there is further attrition coming.
  • We're losing almost all of our scoring from last season. This doesn't really move the needle on that front

I dunno, I'm willing to let it all shake out but this seems like an odd move with so few roster spots available. Might be the reality of who is wanting to come here right now. If so, that's pretty damning.

Just watched about three minutes of Jackson's highlights.

I realize highlights are just that - highlights.

But, you couldn't put together three minutes of TWill highlights that look as promising as what I just saw.

Shoots close to 40% from 3.  Has a smooth stroke.  Appears at least somewhat athletic.  A clear upgrade at the 4.

There's also really no reason to be worried about the scholarship situation.  I'd bet a $1 that TWill will transfer...and Jace can always be taken off of scholarship, if necessary.

Need a 2 and a 3 who can create and get buckets.

Was hoping for a wing. We now have this guy, TWill, Cheddar, Yo-Yo and Glenn as power forwards. Kind of a head scratcher unless we are sure Kante isn’t coming and one of the other guys is trending to the portal.

Like that 3 point percentage. Need to space the floor to open up driving lanes. Good depth add at the very least, especially at the 4

Michigan needs to gets some hits via the portal.

Not sure how good this kid is, but seems like he adds to a really weak 4 spot...

very interesting
