Every time I hear him speak all I can think of is a rabbi giving a lecture.
August 31st, 2015 at 11:16 PM ^
Now let's beat Utah!
August 31st, 2015 at 11:20 PM ^
He aint seen NOTHING yet.
Wait until he gets to go to an OSU game at the Big House when a B1G Championship game berth is on the line.
August 31st, 2015 at 11:31 PM ^
You never know, MGrowOld: the B1G Championship Game berth could be on the line this November.

You are right, but the one big obvious difference is that Bo was a somewhat under the radar hire while Jim is anything but that.
September 1st, 2015 at 12:08 AM ^
I don't think anything related to Michigan football can be considered "under the radar" anymore. With the way the world is now, any news even remotely related will get blown up. Twitter and this blog ensures that.
September 1st, 2015 at 12:10 AM ^
But even so, Jim Harbaugh is a rock star and his hiring made a FAR bigger splash than anyone else's.
September 1st, 2015 at 10:44 AM ^
Was the pebble in the ocean that caused the Fukushima disaster. The ripple went through time into the past.
He's that big of a deal.
August 31st, 2015 at 11:42 PM ^
November 21st obviously.
August 31st, 2015 at 11:22 PM ^
Everytime he speaks it sounds like he knows next to nothing about college athletics which is why getting Hackett is so impressive when we've had athletic people whiff on Miles and Harbaugh multiple times.

The most competent people are good at recognizing where they're lacking. I'm sure there's a clever and timely tie in to Socratic ignorance that I'm missing here, but oh well.
Schlissel obviously isn't the most plugged in guy to NCAA athletics, but he clearly identified and sought good council, which is exactly what a good leader should do.
September 1st, 2015 at 12:14 AM ^
I like the name too. We'll call you #2. Now who does #2 work for?
September 1st, 2015 at 12:26 AM ^
You show that turd who's boss.
September 1st, 2015 at 5:44 AM ^
You are Number Six.
September 1st, 2015 at 6:51 AM ^
I am not a number. I am a free man.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Be seeing you.

Just be mindful of Rover, of course:

Preach. Good leaders find the best talent and people who have the skills they lack. It was big time for Schlissel to see his weakness and go out and get the best to be the AD
September 1st, 2015 at 10:46 AM ^
Knowing who and how to ask is more important than knowing IMO. It's when someone thinks they know everything that they set up everyone around them for failure.
August 31st, 2015 at 11:29 PM ^
played a role in the freedom he must have granted Hackett to "go get the best and obvious guy."
August 31st, 2015 at 11:34 PM ^
But what's important is that he acknowledges that he doesn't know much about sports. A lot of presidents might want to meddle with the athletic department. Schlissel knows it's not his realm of expertise and isn't going to involve himself unless absolutely necessary.
September 1st, 2015 at 12:37 AM ^
I wonder how much this university president will want to meddle in his school's athletic department? Maybe he will watch film with the assistant coaches....
/smh only in ohio!
September 1st, 2015 at 8:06 AM ^
lying piece of shit on that cover trying to pass himself off as a respectful university president. It's a slap in the face of higher education among other things.
September 1st, 2015 at 8:27 AM ^
God, I almost forgot about this. What a joke. I know the position is 95% fundraising, but the notion that a football coach can be a university president is offensive, IMO. Regardless of which school he coached at.
September 1st, 2015 at 9:38 AM ^
I'm just happy that FauxPelini gets to coach under him. Should be a hoot this season.

you are ABSOLUTLEY RIGHT.
There was a study done that proved this exact point. It was shown that the smarter a person was, the more likely they were to be able to recognize their own weaknesses.
So you're exactly right--Schlissel is smart enough to understand that he knows NOTHING about big time college athletics and desperately needed to go get someone like Hackett who not only understood athletics at the Division 1-A level, not only understood Michigan, but had been a long-time successful CEO who had dealt with some major crises..
The most dangerous people in charge are the ones that are just dumb enough to not understand that they they don't really know what they are doing.

They'd not only be too offended to own the book, but they'd think it was unnecessary. From my unfortunate experience with dumb people, one common demoninator is that they think they already know everything. (Just ask 'em - they'll tell you).

I know Obama having the name of Mt. McKinley changed back to Mt. Denali had nothing to do with giving the finger to Ohio, but I still like to imagine that it did.

The hire, however, came at a steep cost: a reported minimum of $40.1 million for seven years, making Harbaugh the highest-paid coach in college football and on par with the highest-paid coaches in the NFL.
He's not even the highest paid in the B1G, let alone in all of CFB.
Come on DetNews, you're better than that (well...maybe not...)
August 31st, 2015 at 11:45 PM ^
Plus, his salary is endowed, no?
August 31st, 2015 at 11:53 PM ^
His position is endowed ("J. Ira and Nicki Harris") although I don't think that necessarily covers his entire salary. But regardless, we've got the money to pay him.
September 1st, 2015 at 12:01 AM ^
The endowment was $10mm, so that gets whatever return M uses. Remember that the football coach's salary is mostly covered outside the AD, though. Hoke made $4.1mm last year but only $300k from the AD.

I thought that was just a bookkeeping kind of thing. My understanding was that in a roundabout way we're paying him to coach, have a TV show, have a radio show, host a camp, and do some other things, but I think our AD ultimately pays for it.
September 1st, 2015 at 12:12 AM ^
From my understanding Adidas and ESPN/Disney are contributing big money for the HC (including Hutch, Red, ect.). I'll admit I'm out of my depth on specifics, since we were praising Schlissel for that above.
Edit to your edit: I don't know, you could be right but that wasn't my understanding. Sounds like something Mr. Yost might have an idea about.
