Another game to note is (22) OK State @ (25) K-State, at 1:45.

Come on, Pitt! This is Rutgers.
January 5th, 2013 at 11:59 AM ^
Interesting...I think we need more of this. Just not in the B1G.

May be the local CBS programming, but it's on.

Depends what you mean by must win. I don't think they come close to winning the B1G regardless. I think they could fall apart a bit if they lose this one though.

Go Illini
January 5th, 2013 at 12:58 PM ^
We R not that B1G into basketball, apparently...

To be fair its over break and that is the student section, but yeah Rutgers is a kind of pathetic school. At least MD has 17k at their game, so there is that.

at what should be a big home game for Rutgers
January 5th, 2013 at 12:59 PM ^
Maryland fans are behind the announcers holding up We Love B1G Turtles signs...has to look bad on ACC network.

Purdue is being edged out by a good 14% in overall shooting and yet they are only six down at halftime. They've worked awfully hard for those thirty points really. Oddly enough, on several dynamics, they are similarly matched - (reference stat comparison)
January 5th, 2013 at 1:07 PM ^
But they are at least better than the Bethune-Cookmans and North Floridas of the world. Pitt's joke of a non-conference schedule rears its ugly head again.
January 5th, 2013 at 1:13 PM ^
MSU just turns the ball over constantly. I know it's been a trend lately, but I can't believe Izzo tolerates that.

They can be OK when Byrd's circus shots are falling, but they're awful at the FT line and don't have a great PG. I don't see them keeping it close against us, especially since we won't gift them this many turnovers.
January 5th, 2013 at 1:57 PM ^
My how they have fallen. They're celebrating a win like it was the Final Four. It's Purdue!
January 5th, 2013 at 1:58 PM ^
Same here except with a Staee housemate. Getting over the hump against Purdue is a big deal these days I guess...

Branden Dawson sure loves talking shit, especially against Purdue. If you recall, last season he ran his mouth at Matt Painter, incensing the Boilermaker coach. This was the same game where the Izzone chanted that they wanted Robbie Hummel to tear an ACL again.
On a related note, I think college referees have gone way too far regarding elbows. Every near-brush of an elbow results in a five minute video review it seems these days.

Purdue gets very pissy when they lose a recruit from their home state. I remember Painter's daughter tweeted "I hope Gary Harris gets hit by a train #ironic" after he committed. Something happened between Painter and Dawson too, but i'm not 100% sure what it was.
January 5th, 2013 at 2:33 PM ^
But I still think Dawson should focus more on playing basketball and less on rubbing Purdue's nose.
Funny that Purdue thought they had a chance with Gary Harris. As far as I could tell, it was an IU/MSU battle.

Getting run out of the gym.. Though, when Illinois is good, they are very tough to beat at home.

this just further proves that as great of a recruiter as Matta is...he is a horrific in-game coach
January 5th, 2013 at 4:04 PM ^
i've been saying this for years. need more 5-stars...
January 5th, 2013 at 4:24 PM ^
Matta reminds me of Steve Fisher. Great recruiter, very ordinary bench coach. He recruits enough talent to frequently mask his coaching deficiencies, but they can rear their head at inopportune times. You also get the sense that he doesn't have complete control over his team.
January 5th, 2013 at 4:04 PM ^
Very hard. But for Nebraska and PSU, road wins are very good wins this year.
January 5th, 2013 at 4:22 PM ^
Until they show otherwise, you can lump NW in with those bottom two.

Apparently Dawson may have thrown a punch against Purdue. Hard to tell from the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vo-Xtlhhre0&feature=player_embedded
Regardless, fun to read Sparty's justification of it. One guy said that (if it was a punch), it was deserved because of the way the Purdue player played dirty the moment before and Dawson was just doing what anyone would do. Deja Vu, eh?
January 5th, 2013 at 4:35 PM ^
definitely seems like the player takes a few steps back after getting hit. There is no excuse to punch someone during a game, ask any athlete who has played competitively, opponents get under your skin, just beat them on the court/field.
