Sam Webb *thinks* Burke will be back, says Michigan hasn't talked to Zeigler

Submitted by Erik_in_Dayton on

For those looking for a little good news this morning after the Great Exodus yesterday, Sam Webb says that he believes that Burke will come back.  That's not based on any inside information, but Sam (as many of you know) usually has a pretty good feel for things.  He also said that Michigan hasn't talked to Zeigler and doesn't expect them to, though he acknowledges that things can change quickly...He also said some interesting things re: Smotrycz...All of this is in the 3/22/12 "Show Open" segment.

The speculation will run wild on either side of the argument until judgement day.  We went through this last year.  We're seasoned veterans.  Prepare for the worst and if it turns out our way, hooray.  If not, at least you were prepared.

My read-in was that there was a little bit of restrained struggle between him and the coaches. It's a net loss for Michigan, and I really think he might have blossomed next year, but he was never going to become quick or a great defender. Can't blame him if he goes somewhere where he might start and be a straight-up shooter, as is his calling.

Evan had a great opportunity to stay outside and shoot here. Where else is a 6'9" guy going to go and play the two. All three's have to play inside a little. It looks to me that he got upset when coaches started demanding a little more from him. Look at the situation thus team was in for bigs. With Horford hurt Evan had to do spot duty at the five. But with the size we have coming back plié the size coming in I think Rvan just didn't like the pressure put on him to perform He is a good player but anywhere he goes there will be demands and expectations. Gooduck to him.

Smot definitely had his moments as a perimeter shooter, and no doubt he would have had more of them. Problem was, his defense surrended just as many points. Partly that's because he was forced to cover bigs. But the problem is, as a practical matter, he's kind of a tweener: not rugged enough to handle big 4/5s not quick enough to handle speedy 3/4s.

And tempermentally he just didn't embrace the B10-ness of it all: the ruggedness, the pressure, etc. He hated it; it wore him down. I bet we'll see him go to a smaller program back East, where he'll be a better fit.

Sam thinks that he wasn't happy in his role in the offense.  Sam thinks that he was probably partcularly unhappy that the offense became more guard-oriented and that his minutes declined as the season went on.  In case I haven't emphasized it enough, this was all just Sam's opinion.

Sam Webb already confirms what Lorenz and Jennings have told us...

PLEASE STAY BURKE.  PLEASE.

This might be a potential for guy Michigan.

From ESPN "Alex Oriakhi will spend his senior season with a team that has a chance to play in the NCAA tournament.  The 6-foot-9, 240-pound Oriakhi will transfer from Connecticut, his father, Alex Sr., told the Hearst Connecticut Media Group."

Wholly SHIT BALLS!!!

In another thread I said we basically need a Nix and Lucious (minus the headache) of MSU to contend like we want...This my friends is better than Nix.

If we have 2 spots left...we need a backup PG and BIG BODY!

This is the BIG BODY! Get him and a back PG and I'll take that trade 11 times out of 10.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Morgan; the kid plays hard and is a physical presence in the paint. I just don't think it is a given that he will be the starter for the majority of the season, and expect that someone making a blanket statement should back it up with some kind of analysis. Morgan is a good player, but he is very limited in what he brings to the floor and guys like McGary and Horford will challenge him for minutes.

Cincinnati has not had a true PG backup the past 2 seasons (both NCAA tournament teams)...they use a combination of SGs and SFs to get them though the 10-15 minutes the starting PG is on the bench.

I could see Stauskas / Vogrich / Akunne handling 10-15 minutes of TEAM PG duties...also, what if we land a combo guard in the Spring Signing?

You're crazy if you think Matt Vogrich is going to start...who exactly do you expect him to guard?

Then Hardaway stops defending if his shot doesn't fall...and you have a freshman SF playing PF and a freshman PF playing C?

We'd give up 70+ every game.

Morgan is going to start...the only question is who starts...Stauskas or GRIII.

I think John B. is going to start Vogrich out initially...maybe Stauskas beats him out during the season.

I think Burke and Hardaway retain their starting spots....Vogrich goes out there because he is an upperclassman that knows the system...and then you add in your 2 blue chips stars.

Indiana was a fun team to watch last year...defense wasn't their strong suit but they were a top 20 scoring team averaging 77 PPG. They had the ability to beat anybody as evidence in beating all 3 B10 co-champs and UK, NCST, ND, etc.

With Bigs like Morgan and Horford, hopefully we are a better defensive team than IU was last year but still pack a similar scoring punch.

Next year in BB is going to be a lot of fun...we'll be alright!

I'm sure the coaches are weighing the options now that there is suddenly a scholarship available.  I'm guessing they are just weighing the upside of bringing in a player who would have to sit a year, and then could play a max of 2, vs what they expect they could get if offering that to a HS player with either 4 years of eligibility, or potentially a high ceiling (a la burke)
