Roll call for tomorrow's battle for the Little Brown Jug

Submitted by readyourguard on

There's still a game to be played by the team wearing winged helmets.  It's another chance to visit Ann Arbor, maybe have a couple beers beforehand, stroll around campus, listen to the band, and watch the only football game at the Big House. Blue in South Bend referenced the "actuarial tables" that says he might have 400-450 more home games left on this earth.  I'm older than Blue.  My tables suggest I better get to every damn game I can.  My son is already a junior.  Unless UM Dental School comes calling, my chances of seeing a game while he's still a student are nearing single digits.

So? Who's putting all the BS aside and going to the game tomorrow?

This guy will be there.  Section 23 Row 72.  My wife and I were supposed to drive down to Alabama to see our daughter, but she told us to postpone until next week.  (Unfortunate timing.  I had tickets to the Michigan Rutgers game.  I was going to meet my buddy in Manhattan, enjoy the Big Apple Friday night, meet up with my cousins in Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon, then head on over to NJ for the game.  The best laid plans.... Shit bags.)

Hail to the colors that float in the light

Hurray for the Yellow and Blue

I won't be there, but I will be watching. I'm trying out a new lucky charm I've never used before: a maize and blue scarf my grandma hand-knit for me. Even though she was born in another country and had never seen an American football game in her life, she knew I was, and always will be, a Michigan fan. I've never worn it during a game before (I currently live in FL so I never really use it period), but I think it's going to turn things around for us. You can all thank me in January.

I did some yardwork last weekend and really messed up my maize 2003 student football game t-shirt thing, so I threw it away. I'm hoping that will be the difference. Nothing good has happened since then, at least according to this Blog, so it must be the shirt. Yep, that's what I'm going with until proven wrong tomorrow.

But which M is which? I'll tell you Sunday.

Driving in from Chicago with a friend. We're meeting up with old high school & college people and catching the game. My friends are feeling patriotic so I think we're going to Rick's American Cafe tonight. The Yelp reviews are strange considering it's a cafe.

Tomorrow I'll be on Middle Bass Island on Lake Erie.  The weather forecast calls for absolutely georgous weather and for the first time in what' got ot be at LEAST 35 to maybe even 40 years I am considering not attending, not watching or even listening to the game.  I'm thinking of going fishing and as God is my witness I cannot remember any Saturday, since I was about 15 years old, where an autumn Saturday didnt mean finding a way to go, watch or listen to Michigan football.

I'm not mad like ProfitgoBlue.  This isn't some sort of protest statement (I still want them to win very much and I'll still watch if I dont go fishing) but it's the realization that at least right now - I just don't care that much anymore what happens - good or bad - and the prospect of catching walleye or perch seems more attractive to me than the game tomorrow.

Don't blame you in the least for this; I'm with you on the apathetic part. I'll spend my day relaxed in front of my big screen HDTV at my house on Lake Erie, enjoying the view on a beautiful day. It just far outweighs what's now become a chore in going to another awful game in an awful gameday experience.

I am glad somebody mentioned apathy. I am taking my family to the circus today and plan on watching the game when I get home. But there is a part of me that wants to wait and check the final score to see if the game is worth watching.

Face it, you'll be listening. No matter how painful it gets, a fan with that type of pedigree will return to the radio or tv like a swan returning to capistrano. I was 5, 1958 to be exact, when my Dad and Mom started taking me to AA, which is where i was born during his last year of law school. We ate at the Old German after almost every game, or stayed a Weber's.

There were some lean years in those early times, and i witnessed the resurgence to our customary position.  The end of Carr and his lazy complacency, the petty bickering that derailed RR and his total disregard of defense, the huckerism and egotism of Brandon (still feeling inferior perhaps after all those years on the end of the bench), and now the bumbling leadership of BH...

It's always darkest before the dawn.  I know what I would do if they made me king, or at least President of UM.  Somehow it will work out. Let's hope it is not too much longer. It seems real damage is starting to be done.

One thing is for sure though, you'll be listening.  Thanks for the contributions.

We often hear takes on 'never get married on a Saturday in the Fall'.

Never considered the 'never take engagement photos on a Saturday in the Fall' issue.

When's the wedding?

Brandon might be able to put together a football Saturday engagement photo package at the big house.

(with Coke products and a lunch catered by Arby's and Kraft).
