Rich Rod said he would have won 10 games also

Submitted by UofM Die Hard … on

This is my first forum post so I apologize if this sucks.

I was reading an articile and it was about how Rich Rodriquez was quoted saying he would have won 10 games AT LEAST also.  Now I was one of the supporters of Rich Rod so I was a little sad to see him go, he had a tough situation to deal with.  I do think he needs to refrain from saying some things, its making me lose some respect for him.  Can you just focus on your new job please?

He did give credit to our coaching staff which was nice but what he said came off very childish.

Please read the article and tell me what you think:

Look at Michigan's B1G record last year.  Of eight games played Michigan gave up 34 points or more in seven.  Hells bells, Michigan could have given up as many points to OSU this year as they did last year with one major difference, this year Michigan still wins the game.

No sir, RR should have STFU and left well enough alone.  Praising the squad, great.  Praising the new coaching staff, very big of him.  But then to qualify the current coaching staff's success as measured by what he could have done...childish.

Three years ago RRod was quoting Saint Bobby about losing big, then losing close, then winning close.  This year, Hoke's first year, he said "Fuck that losing crap, we're going to win".

He made stupid comments similar to that ever since he stepped foot in Ann Arbor!  "The cupboard was bare", "Vince Lombardi.......",  "You raise me up".  I did feel somewhat bad for him, but now.....  Nope!

in a round hole is what he was.  Too bad for him, it was never going to work "M politically" and for that I felt bad.  Thankfully he will continue to open his mouth like this little burp and make me feel better.

Also makes me appreciate every respectfully chosen word that comes from Hoke's lips.

It was a crappy question, and he shouldn't have answered it. He should have just said something like "I'm focused on winning games at Arizona" and left it at that. Don't you think Hoke would have dodged it?

The guy is really in no place to be predicting 10+ seasons at Michigan. The last time we saw him coaching, he was losing 52-10 against a mediocre Mississippi State team. In saying that he would have won over ten games, it made him sound arrogant and maybe a little bit delusional. However, admitting that he wouldn't have done as good of a job as Hoke would be admitting that Hoke is a better coach than he was. He just should have ignored it as almost every coach would have. The Huge Show guy was just trying to get a headline at Rich Rod's expense. He succeeded.

Thank God we've got a guy who responds to questions like that in "TREMENDOUS, toughness, MANBALL, deflect credit, POINT".

Yeah. Suggestions:

Point

EPIC DOUBLE POINT

Fake field goal.

Go for it on 4th down.

Go for it on 4th down because going up 17 isn't enough, you have to go up 21 because THIS IS MICHIGAN FERGODSAKES.

Again THIS IS MICHIGAN

TREMENDOUS

Toughness

Talk about "feeling" offensive/defensive linemen.

Deflect credit.

"He had a boo-boo"

We gotta play Michigan football

FT started the game but just had 2 carries for 5 yards in the Gator Bowl. (He also caught a 5 yard pass). I don't think he was ever healthy for an extended period of tiome before this year.

MM never recovered after Sparty's cheap shot. His ankles bothered him the rest of the year. He had no tackles and just one assist.

Martin didn't get hurt until week 6.  The UMass and Indiana debacles occurred before his ankle injury.  So no, it wasn't the principal factor.  Besides, he was healthy enough to play in all 13 games.  He never missed any time.  He may not have been 100%, but that's football.

I'd say the number one factor, by a country mile, was horribly inept defensive coaching.  RR insisted on a scheme he didn't even understand.  GERG didn't understand it either.  None of the position coaches had any clue what they were doing, and talent evaluation and placement was dreadful.

hilarious.  All we heard in 2010 was "What do you expect from this defense, they're so young."  Now the excuse is ... wait for it ... RR didn't have 3 more freshman on his defense?  Can someone just pick an excuse and stick with it.

As for the interview, this is the problem with RR in a nutshell.  He probably should have avoided the interview, and he definitely should have ducked the question.  he could have said "I am really proud of the players, and thought Coach hoke did a great job with them.  Wish I had that opportunity, but I'm excited about coaching in Arizona now"

It's easy and non-controversial.  But he simply us unable to do it, and will continue to make these blunders.  Until he realizes he doesn't have to answer every question, and say everything that pops into his head, he's going to be a pr disaster.

Rodriguez inherited a disaster from LC and steadily rebuilt the team into a winner last year. I would have expected further improvement this year to at least 9 wins. With the benefit of hindsight - seeing how pathetically weak the Big Ten was this year - I'm confident RR would have won at least 10 games this year. Also, don't forget that Michigan lost several great players he recruited after he was fired: Dee Hart, Kris Frost and Jake Fisher. And that's if he had kept his old staff. There was a lot of speculation that Brandon would insist on a defensive coaching change as a condition of RR remaining.

Hart was the 2nd, and when Rich was still the coach. And the link you post says in the first sentence -

This move has been rumored for a few weeks, and has now come to fruition.

So he was rumored to leave well before the bowl, and had committed, decommitted, committed again, and basically gone around in circles.

Kris Frost all but waited for an Auburn scholarship to open up. He couldn't "leave", because he was never a sure thing. His parents wanted him to go to Michigan; he didn't.

Fisher might be a case, but the other lineman who ended up at Penn State left before the bowl was even played. There was not a max decommit or exodus when he was fired. If anything, they started jumping hsip when they saw the season was going to hell. And the bowl was the final nail.

It's just this claim that he had this amazing recruiting class coming in if he had just been retained is rewriting history. Most were getting shakey well before the season ended. This borad had weekly parties and meltdowns on Hart flip-flopping.  Most didn't not come because Rich was fired. Most didn't come because the end of the season looked like a program headed for disaster, which would cause the coach to get fired.  If Rich had the #1 recruiting class signed, sealed, and delivered coming in, he'd probably still have his job, because they wouldn't want to risk losing it and have given him a 4th year. But keep dreaming that it was all set up that way.

completely glosses over the disaster of the defense in 2010, and the blame that was put on being "too young."  The idea that these freshman would suddenly make a difference under RR, when previous freshman struggled to the point of disaster, is belied by the facts.

I would also point out that while wins increased from 2009 to 2010, the kicking game and defense got worse.  If your expecting things to continue on a trend, did you expect them to further degenerate as well?

We will never know what would happen under RR with this team, but i think we can say with certainty that more defensive freshman would have made a difference for his team.  It didn't in the past, not sure why you would expect it to make such a difference in the future.

He should have broken into a chorus of "You're still you".  That would have brought the house down.

"Where is that damned nacho dip?  Did you take it Tate?  BOY!!!!!"  *grabs Tate Forcier by the neck in classic Homer/Bart pose and begins to oscillate rapidly*

"Dont have a cow, man" Tate replies, pulling his signature hoodie up over his head.

"Doh!" RichRod responds as he realizes that the whole world is watching.  RR puts him down and goes back to the business of destroying everything he touches.  Hilarity ensues.

Sorry for the interruption but I have to tell you that EVERY time you post something I have to look twice to see if it's our esteemed leader inside the thread.  Your avitar and his are the same colors and upon a quick glance look a lot alike.

You may now resume the RR discussion as normally planned.  That is all.

Our ceiling was 7 wins last season....while our floor was 3-4 wins.  This year, our ceiling was 12(so far), while our floor was 8.  Dodge the question or say, "We certainly would have worked hard enough to help them reach their potential.." or some crap like that.  But to go out and say that one more year of your coaching would have created this miraculous turnaround is just disrespectful to the amazing jobs our current coaches have done.

He was saying before Brady Hoke coached his first game here that this was going to be the year where his offense came together and Michigan was going to compete for the B1G championship.  It wasn't disrespectful then because Coach Hoke hadn't established his 10-2 season yet..  The reason it seems so now is because it seems he is comparing himself to the current coach.  He is really just saying what he believed all along -- even before Brady Hoke got here.

I believe it is possible because we had a friendly schedule with 8 home games, but the scores would have been like basketball games.

I think about 50% of people here have Stockholm Syndrome.  15-22 but atleast we didn't get in trouble with the NCAA, oh wait that happened too.  All other matrix are irrelevant.  Sounds like a bunch of beaten wives who deserve that one or three year slap but really love him or are we the Fighting Patty Hearsts?

I don't understand people like you. RR didn't work out; he's gone. Comparing him to a wife beater or kidnapper is way out of line.

I'll bet any amount of money that there isn't a reader on this site who has worked harder for Michigan football than RIch Rodriguez. Moeller, Carr, Martin or Brandon, sorry if you're reading this, as you're the only living exceptions I can think of. A former Wolverine head coach deserves a hell of a lot better than to be compared to felons. Get some class.

Edit: and of course Hoke.

Actually, if you listen to the entire interview and take the comments in context, they are exactly what you would want a coach to say.  He gave credit to the current staff, but was also sure to state his opinion on what he could have done and why.

Huge gave RR plenty of chances to dump on Michigan, but he stayed classy.  Sorta like the OP could have done, but didn't.

Just to clarify:

Would those ten games RR would have won--make that AT LEAST ten games--WITH Greg Robinson still running the D?

Just checking.

Rich Rod needs help with public relations.  He took a shot at WVU in regards to leaving the Big East and ignoring the 24 month notice rule.  He then takes a shot at Dave Brandon during his introduction press conference at Arizona.   Nobody knows how many games he would have won this season, but for him to publically say that is bush league.
