I think it's pretty creative, and about as non-cringey/awkward as you could hope a video like that to be. Gotta say though, "The Team, The Team, The Team" looks a lot better than that abomination ever did.

Michigan Football.
August 11th, 2013 at 11:20 AM ^
Watching Michigan, with blinders on.
If somebody really seriously wanted to fight with me, they could have said that the Schembechler/Carr/Moeller sideline freakouts were almost always in the service of working the refs. Carr in particular was very effective, in being a screaming prick along the sidelines to work the refs. As a partisan, I liked that. Good on Carr.
But there were other leaders in the collegiate football coaching profession who were a lot more gentlemanly than any of our guys.
Rich Rodriguez was a remarkably gentle presence on the sideline. He rarely talked to the defense, much less scream at them. He was particularly solicitous of his young QB's, Forcier and Robinson. Rodriguez did less to work the refs with unruly behavior than most Big Ten coaches.

... immediately after the '08 Utah game -- Rodriguez's first game in Micihgan Stadium -- that I could not believe how little involvment he had with the defense. It wasn't cirticism necessarily, at that time. I just found it amazing that he didn't talk to the defensive staff, or the players. Not during breaks, not coming off the field (well, maybe a little). It was like two different teams.
That is just his system. I've seen it in the few Arizona games I could watch last year. But television doesn't ever do it justice. It is very unusual; very interesting.
August 11th, 2013 at 2:11 PM ^
I think a lot of peopel found him embarrassing due to the tears, pouting, post game blaming, and banquet music selection.....I'm pretty sure if the team was playing reasonably against decent B1G teams and he was slamming headsets in anger, people wouldn't have considered him "embarrassing." On a side note, if you can't tell by interviews or direct player interaction that they mostly hated his guts, you're blind.
August 11th, 2013 at 11:55 AM ^
There's a huge difference between being a screming prick on the sidelines and a whiny bitch. Bo, Moe, and Carr were the former..RR was the latter and it was embarassing.

I’ve been kicked, pushed, knocked down, publicly berated, belittled, emasculated and more."
Tate Forcier
Humiliating Forcier in front of the nation was just one of the testaments to RR's inability to lead.
August 11th, 2013 at 1:04 PM ^
Tate's a great source. It's not like he was raised in a weird environment that produced a herd of narcissists or anything.
I'm not saying people knocking RR in this regard are wrong. I'm just saying that taking anything Tate Forcier says at face value is ridiculous. We probably all know enough about him that anybody posting something like that from him is just being flat out disingenuous, even.
There was only one person responsible for the humiliation of Tate Forcier, anyway, and it wasn't Rich Rodriguez.
August 11th, 2013 at 1:29 PM ^
I think he should have lost the starting job after the towel on the head incident. I also think it should have happened in the coach's office, not on the front page of every media outlet in the country.
The point however, was made in response to a claim that RR was solicitous toward his QB's.
For a fan to attempt to dismiss the thoughts of a former player actually makes me laugh. Everyone's opinion matters except for the person involved. Okay, I'll be disingenuous for a bit.
His perceptions still count, good, bad, or otherwise. RR recruited him knowing that he was raised in that world. The resolution to his problems could have been made in the coach's office - "do this or I start Denard". How do you expect to publicly humiliate your QB, and then have him return to lead the team. That was RR wanting everyone else to do his job for him, a total failure of leadership.
August 11th, 2013 at 2:06 PM ^
I'm not "attempting" to dismiss the thoughts of a former player. I am dismissing them.
I don't know what you're talking about in regard to this being handled in the coach's office. I think you're forgetting how some things went. Tate was the third string QB going into the game and then sulked on the sidelines with a towel on his head because of it. That was all Tate's doing. Tate didn't sulk on the sidelines and then publicly lose the starting job. It was never his to begin with. The media circus surrounding the incident was entirely Tate's fault. The words, "All you need to know is I'm out," didn't come out of RRs mouth after that game.
And if you're going to quote one tiny portion of his statement while implying that it was directed specifically toward RR when Tate never stated that to be the case, yeah, you're being disingenuous.
August 11th, 2013 at 3:21 PM ^
At least you didn't supply the full quote.
Here:
"I’ve been kicked, pushed, knocked down, publicly berated, belittled, emasculated and more. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to give up or feel the victim. The humility of it all is indescribable and that is exactly my point. I had to reach rock bottom in order to see the light, and for that, I am thankful. It was not until then, I realized that it was my lack of accountability and maturity and not to pass blame."
What an asshole you are, LB, for that selective cutting. Not that it is such a great quote to begin with. Who knows who the Managing Editor of "QB Force" may have been.

When I didn't start this thread, and didn't start weiging in on any strengths or weaknesses of Rodriguez as a coach. All that I needed to do, to set off the MGoFanBoyze, was post a few pictures of Schembechler and Carr that put the lie to the unsupportable notion that Rodriguez's sideline demeanor was deficient for Michigan standards.
Dude.

...to haters and defenders equally. It takes two to tango.
August 11th, 2013 at 12:51 PM ^
True, but I think it's fair to say that there are more binary thinkers on the hater side.
Most of RichRod's supporters here (thinking of Purple Stuff and Section 1) would probably concede that the guy has imperfections as a coach. I believe that to be the case, anyway. Section 1 can correct me if I'm wrong. :)
On the other side? There are plenty of eloquent detractors, but there are also many who, to take the '08 season as an example, can see only 3-9 and no bowl. Nothing else. Not Michael Rosenberg, Lloyd's boys (Braylon, Dhani, and especially Eric Mayes), the least talented team in the modern era, etc. All they know is that RichRod lost a lot of games, so it must be all his fault. Simpler, right? "CreedenceTapes" here seems like a fine example. Dude!
Even under ideal circumstances I don't think he ever would have reached great (11/12-win seasons) heights at Michigan, but it would've helped to not have to work against part of the fans from the beginning.
August 11th, 2013 at 1:51 PM ^
I suspect there's not a single person here on either side of the question that doesn't recognize that Rodriguez has strengths as a football coach and would make a terrific offensive coordinator. So I think the "binary thinker" notion is a straw man.
August 11th, 2013 at 3:27 PM ^
I've never made any grand pronouncement as to what sort of football coach Rich Rodriguez is. I'm in absolutely no position to judge. You can't find a single example of me on MGoBlog trying to explain why any Michigan coach is good, bad or indifferent. As a coach. It is the coaches' profession; they devote their lives to it. I'm not even close to being their peer.

I actually think it's really important to discuss Rodriguez and his time here. You know, the whole "don't want to repeat the mistakes of the past" thing. Both in who we hire and how we treat our coaches.
I just wish we could do it civilly.
August 11th, 2013 at 11:47 AM ^
August 11th, 2013 at 11:50 AM ^
I wish you would stop posting about anything related to RR. Are you Tom Beaver?
The difference is Bo, Moeller and Carr freaked out on the refs. Rich Rod threw hissy fits towards his players. That is embarrassing. Trying to compare how RR acted and how Bo acted on the sidelines makes you come across as a bitter ex boyfriend.
Which in all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if you and Rod had something considering the lengths you go to defend him.
August 11th, 2013 at 1:09 PM ^
Section 1's irrational continued defense of RichRod is bizarre and this discussion of coach demeanor on the sidelines is strange (basically, they all yell a lot, at the refs and in "teaching" the players when watching from my section).
The bit about "you and Rod had something" is offensive and RCMB/MLive at it's core.
