Report: Urban Meyer to Ohio done

Submitted by G-Man on

Eleven Warriors is reporting Urban Meyer to tOSU as an almost done deal.  They say there's an agreement, but no timetable for an announcement.

EDIT: Sorry, photo not working.  Click for Twitter and screencap link.

I think this is probably true though. If Urban Meyer is talking to Arizona about coaching next year, he's going to be coaching next year. If he wants the Ohio State job, you've got to imagine that they'd offer it to him. Where would he choose to coach over Ohio State? A couple of weeks ago I might have said Penn State but obviously not now.

Said that it's a done deal when I talked to him two weeks ago. To be announced november 29th at the osu duke basketball game the week after The Game. Luke Fickell to be named assistant head coach.

For one, I wonder what Mrs. Meyer would have to say about that. Next, he took stepped away from the game, which allowed his coordinators and assistant to get gigs elsewhere. He'll be starting over from scratch if that's the case, because I just don't see him retaining the current staff.

I know Tim Tebow played tonight and thus ESPN is more than likely talking about that every second of SportsCenter, but I think if this was even remotely true, the rumors would be all over ESPN by now ... a few hours and nothing.  I think, for some, this makes sense -- Urban Meyer going to Ohio State, so they want to scream a source so if it happens, they "knew" it.

Or so they want people to think.

Dantonio is set in EL. He isn't going anywhere. He has his own health problems and has a pretty good thing going for him over there. At OSU he's just another coach, at MSU, he's a legend.

thats all true. but he also has beaten us 4 yrs in a row, and he is getting his clocked cleaned in in-state recruiting. if brundige had better grades wed have 8 of the top 10 and hed have none. writing is on the wall. he might figure he can match um recruiting a lot better at osu. plus by now he knows msu has no national cache.

He hasn't been there for over a decade, I could see him clashing with the Vrabel, Fickell traditional Tresselball types, Urban is going to try bring in a lot of kids from Florida and the South, not so many from Circleville and Washington Court House.

The problem with all of this is that Urban Meyer's dad passed away less than a week ago. I doubt he would be busy talking about a new job in the immediate aftermath of his father's death. It's not like the job is going anywhere, given that Meyer is at the top of their list.

I don't want to see Meyer in Columbus, but it's not because he's a good coach. I actually want OSU to be good, since the rivalry is more fun when both teams are strong. I don't want him there because I've always liked and respected Meyer and I don't know how I feel about liking OSU's coach.

....of Eleven Warriors breaking news is troublesome - I'll believe when Meyer is at the podium making his introductory speech. On the other hand, I could totally believe Eleven Warriors breaking toilets.....or Igloo coolers.

I think this rumor began on the scout free board for all who are interested...and began with some idiot poster Bloodofabuck saying

'ahhhh 5 o'clock...time to call it a day and go home....

ala...a done deal cool'

Looks totally legit...S/

I like how in the span of a week OSU has gone from "the team's really coming together under Fickell!  I hope he stays head coach." to "Urban Meyer is a done deal".

If UM's past two coaching searches have taught me anything, it's don't start believing until the press conference.

To be fair, Being a head coach is close to a 100hr work week during the season and not much better year round. Being a commentor for a game only lasts a few months during the season, and really, he only needs to be gone on the weekends when he does his one game.

A few weeks ago him and Todd McShay were breaking down film on ESPN and there was this big picture of Woody Hayes behind Meyer in his office. Ever since that day Ive felt that this was a done deal

Yeah let's see how myer does without unlimited scholarships or the wealth of recruits in Florida in a time when the other major schools are down. Did I mention he is emotionally unstable?

as we're kicking his and Ohio's ass or whoever's ass happens to be sitting on the Shoe.

"I am trying to break your heart", Wilco...on account of Meyer's heart being you know fragile like easily breakable? Or does this work for Dantonio too?

Sheesh. I might not be making sense. But you all understand anyway.

one of the rumored reasons Urban quit his job at UF was that the boosters had too much control over the program and that he would have to do shady stuff (which, apparently, he's a moral guy) that he didn't want to do.

So, that, along with his heart problem and kids made him quit and work for ESPN.

If he had issues with boosters at UF, he ain't seen nothing compared to OSU.

FWIW, 11w tweeted it, but hasn't posted it on their website. I think this probably has legs, much like Miles to UofM had legs, but the reports coming out could turn this thing south in a hurry.

The other rumor spreading around, and I don't have links, just comment posts here and there from commenters I trust, are that Urbs is coming in and keeping Fickell on staff. Luke knew what this was, a fling. He will stay around for the same pay he's making this year to be the DC, we get a new offensive staff, and a HC with actual HC experience who knows how to use his timeouts, how to get the team prepared for big games AND games against teams from Indiana (not named ND). So, again, rumors, some of it probably aspirational more than truthful.

ha ha,, he would be a good fit.  He is no saint either.  Why would Meyer want to go to a school that puts more pressure on the coach than any other school and he couldn't stand the heat in Fla?  And besides tOSU will be operating with at least 5 fewer schoolies a year for at least 3 yrs and be on probation for 5 years with no post season for probably 2 years.

Comment from the originator of we 11dubsters going all flightaware:

An update on the flight: I was told by my source that Urban was NOT on that flight. There was a man and a woman who got off the plane. My guess is Urban's wife went house shopping while Urban's lawyer ironed out the details of the contract. I believe Urban was in Kissimmee, FL yesterday. For all interested, the plane is returning to Gainesville this morning. Timeline fits. If it is Urban's lawyer, he'll probably have the contract in hand and ready for Urban to sign, which would fit the description of it being a "99.7% done deal".

For me personally, this would be a kick in the balls

I wanted a coaching search that included striking out a few times, right around a failure to monitor charge, bowl ban, and signing day.

If this is done this fast, Urb will murder recruiting, and no one will care about the other stuff because they have Urb.  Love Hoke, Mattison and company, and I think we're on the way up,  but I'm not going to act like Ohio State getting Urban Meyer doesn't make me raise my eyebrow a little bit.

The spread doesn't work in the Big Ten so whatever.

*Dies inside knowing that Meyer is going to walk into a situation 1000x better than Rodriguez and the Buckeyes are going to be the team I wanted Michigan to be...*

OSU fans made fun of Michigan for three years, saying the spread would never work in the Big Ten, but they are now begging Urban Meyer to be there coach who specializes in the spread offense.

I certainly wasn't ever in the "spread doesn't work in the Big Ten" camp. I felt that if RR was given a little more time, and apparently support from Carr, he could have been dangerous. November in the Big Ten is rough, and OSU/Tressel always had planned every week specifically for Michigan. But if RR could have fielded a D with a pulse, he'd have won 8 games this year no problem. OSU struggles mightly against spread offenses, so UoM running one scared me. I was shocked when we held you guys to 7pts last year.
