Public arrests at ND game

Submitted by Blazefire on

I thought this was an interesting tidbit and a good example of why a night game against MSU is indeed a bad idea.

Seventy-two people were ejected from Michigan Stadium on Saturday, and 11 people were arrested. Another 133 people had to be treated by emergency medical personnel and of those 133 people, 21 were taken to the hospital according to University of Michigan Police.

He lays out the truth about the negatives that would happen if they hosted Michigan State at night, but he does it without directly saying what he really is talking about which is that MSU has a lot of punk fans in their fanbase that would stir up all kinds of trouble for a night game.

Okay, let's be honest: Michigan fans would be causing trouble themselves. It's an intense rivalry, people are stupid, and the night start would exacerbate it.
DB's comments about recruiting hit the mark, too. Can't imagine a better recruiting tool. I think DB's moves have helped make both football and basketball more competitive.

One of my best friends came and stayed up for the MSU game a few years back. We lived around Sgt. Peppers at the time. We were partying the night before and walked over to get some more beer and as a group of dumbasses walked by, someone just cold clocked him for no reason other than he was wearing an MSU shirt. He received a broken nose, broken jaw and a slight concussion from his head hitting the ground. The dumbasses were highfiving each other. Each fan base is full of trash.

Is basically him just saying that the Michigan St game atmosphere would get rowdier at night. It still seems like the arrests from this night game is irrelevant to his argument. He's basically just saying sparties gonna spart and drag us down to their level, especially at night

Evidently there was a couch fire too. This year has had way too many couch burnings outside of EL than I care for. This new crop of Wolverines are really hurting one of my main rebuttals in any debate with a Sparty fan...

I was part of two of the couch burnings on cedar street. I lived there. They weren't a big deal like u guys think. They (EL fire) let the fire burn...and then moved the couch to the side of the road, while we had a street long snowball fight. No arrests were made, and it was actually cool. However, it was following a loss to..ahh fuck I forgot, but it made it better for me. Arrests happen but there is a certain chippy was that happens when state and Michigan fans get together. It could be bad news bears.

DB has regarding night games for MSU/OSU.  If it's such a problem, why does LSU, Bama, ND, etc have night games?  Because the publicity and revenue outweigh the 0.06% that get arrested.

I'd bet most of those people were passed out from drinking too much. Probably a little overlap between the ejections and those needing medical attention. I also wonder how many I the ejections were for using someone else's ID or some similar minor infraction. Doesn't necessarily mean unruly behavior.

RCMB morons claim that Dave Brandon is a "pussy" and thinks we should have a night game here with them.

Do they desire to be embarrassed by our football team on national tv or something?

I have a friend (40 yrs old, normally dressed and relatively sober) who got kicked out of the stadium 3 minutes after entering, 30 minutes before kickoff.  It seems the ole Jim Beam traveler doesn't just get tossed in the trash if the cops see it, the dude carrying the traveler also gets kicked out.  Pretty harsh.  Most annoying, the cop asked my friend "so how much did you pay for your ticket?"  Hopefully the cop spent the game dealing with drunks and never had a chance to watch the game.  With that kind of police state, I'm surprised the numbers are so low.

Funny you mention it...I've lived in two countries ignorant people refer to as "third world" (an outdated and naive term with enormous racial/prejudicial connotations).

I've also spent a significant amount of time in Damascus, Syria (not exactly Iran, but I bet about the same to you).  Does that mean my comments are now valid in your eyes?

Thank you.

No, I know it's debatable.  However,  it's coincidental (not ironic) that you'd use such hyperbole.

I have no problem with people being ejected for disruptive, inappropriate behavior; and if you're doing something dumb you should pay the price. On the other hand, such "preventative punishment" is prudish, and in my mind goes too far.

My friend threw the bottle in the trash voluntarily, was totally compliant with the police, and simply wanted the matter closed. Dragging him out and mocking him went beyond my sense of what's right, and certainly went beyond what I've experienced in other countries. Meanwhile, as mentioned in these comments, someone observed entirely out of bounds behavior by a dude who clearly should have been booted but was allowed to stay.

I'm certain all of the actions and reactions discussed won't stop any of these people from doing similarly again.

Yet he needed to drink a whole bottle inside the stadium.Because drunks with bottles to toss is a good idea in the stadium.

I think the cop was saying "was it worth having to be a drunk to miss out on the game after spending so much money?"  But I'm guessing he or you didn't learn anything from it.

We had several people being carted out by EMS either from drinking way too much or heat exhaustion and its usually always women in that section. Along with that I had several people not in the right seats which I helped them find the right section and other people complaining they can't see the game. We try our best to fix the issue but when you have 115,000 + it's not easy.

The temp didn't drop like it was supposed to, so it was warm with that many bodies in there, but I didn't think it was all that hot out at night.

Now CMU I was ready for you to come cart me out in the 2nd quarter. It wasn't THAT hot, but it humid as all get out.

every last lighted bracelet from those arrested/ejected/etc., and gave them to a few of the many thousands that went without.

(we entered about a half-hour prior to kickoff and all the bracelets were already gone!)

First of all how can you promote it (did they say they were limited?) and not have enough for everyone? Then how hard is it to just hand them to people. Dozens of volunteers standing there, doing nothing.  Plus giving them to all the volunteers first over the paying customers wasn't smart. Bet those concession stand workers looked great on tv.

Still, I can't complain too much. The group of young guys next to me who brought they ND friend had them, and the ND guy for some reason didn't want something that lights up with a block M after the game, so he left it behind.

Being Sparty is reason enough to not schedule a night game with them.  Ohio would be okay but considering it will be November 30 this year, 8:00 p.m. would make it rather chilly.

my girlfriend was STILL performing the chicken dance to passing Irish fans, most which thought it was hilarious. Then Bad-Ass Billy walks up to ME and says "You messed with the wrong Irishmen today" and proceeds to roll up his sleeves (what is this an old western movie???) with his buddy in a cast sitting there nodding. As soon as I move toward him, another, significantly bigger than myself or these irish fans, steps in between us and basically tells this juvenile to go home- the look on this Irish kid's face was PRICELESS.

If you're on this blog, thanks for saving one/both us from going to jail that night!

There was a drunk jerk behind me in Sec 44 that was trash-talking a couple of ND guys through the first qtr and then one of the ND guys apparently said something pretty bad to the guy and from that point on he kept threatening the ND guy and swearing at him and calling him female genital parts and dropping MFs everywhere.  I finally turned around and told him to knock it off because there was an 8-yr old girl just four seats away.

Then he kept threatening to beat the guy up and just as the last play of the 1st half ended this jerk climbs over 4 people and attacks the ND guy.  I pulled him back and proceeded to berate him for starting a fight in front of 100k people and told him to take it outside or be the bigger man and let it go.  Someone else got Security and they removed him, but let him come back in the 3rd qtr.  He was quieter, but he sould have been removed permanently.

My 15-yr old heard and saw the whole thing and although we enjoyed the win, the experience was severly tainted.  That experience and the constant assault on our senses by the music and noise for 4 hours is making me re-think keeping my season tickets.  There wasn't one moment of peace until we left the stadium.  I think it's a little over the top.

You don't need to keep the fans engaged for the entire game by bombarding them with sound and video to keep their interest.  At least at home I can mute the sound during commercials.
