Presser: Harbaugh asked about contract and signgate

Here's the video for just that portion.  He pushes to focus on the upcoming game.  Does say that the article from last night is not accurate.

For all who are asking Warde to do more, does anyone remember an instance when an AD came out in support of a coach in the middle of an NCAA investigation (real or bogus)?  I have been working in this area on and off close to 20 years, and I cannot think of one.  I would love to see how the support was handled (we may have a somewhat thorny issue at my institution too!).

Who is Alabama's AD? Georgia's? Texas'? Washington?

I doubt anyone on this blog could get all four right without using a search engine. How many people could name the head football coach at those schools? I'm guessing most people on this blog. The head coach is the face of the program. The head coach answers to the media. Remember, most head coaches make significantly more money than their AD. It's part of the job.

For those who want a definitive public statement from Warde, please outline what you want him to say.

He probably doesn't have proof OSU hired the PI firm. He probably doesn't have comprehensive proof of what was being looked for, what was found, therefore what may still come out. He probably knows most of what is needed regarding Connor Stalions because he is already on leave. So, what is Warde supposed to say today? Keep in mind, you don't make a public statement without being able to answer the questions which will follow.

There may come a day for a public statement. That day is when you can stand behind the comments you make and face the scrutiny of the media without negative consequence. That is not today.

In lieu of starting another thread, I wanted to point out that stallions is still on paid leave. Doesn't it seem at this point with all that has come out that if the AD was going to bend over and take it he'd be gone? I may be proven wrong at any moment and he gets fired, but to me they are letting this play out without shooting themselves prematurely. I think the fact that he really seemed to be operating in a gray area is woefully underrepresented in the discussion by Brian et al... Not to say it hasn't been brought up, but the latest signal gate article seems resigned to some punishment when there has been no proof of a rule being broken. Maybe some contorted morality rule, but I don't think the administration believes that since they are still paying the man...

Just a thought ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't need Warde up there. I need some flunky--Dave Ablauf or some SID type to start by saying "No questions will be taken or answered pertaining to an investigation per NCAA regulations." And that dude, not Harbaugh needs to be saying "Next question" every time one of these idiots asks about it.

Concluding with "If there are no questions about this week's game with Purdue, we're going to wrap this up."

Whether we can or we can not, we fucking owe Harbaugh our support.  He came home when the whole world laughed at us for suggesting he might. He put up with a huge part of our fanbase crapping on him for 7 years. He took a paycut while guys like Tugger and Franklin got huge raises.

Is it any suprise that now that he has us rolling that our rivals desperately want him out of here?  Support Harbaugh or enjoy your next Rich Rod and Hoke.

Press Question:   Let me ask another inane question about the sign bullshit.

Harbaugh reply:   "The scent of field corn is an aphrodisiac to the carcajou."

Press followup:   " But, isn't the sign bullshit going to [insert doom scenario]"

Harbaugh:  "Some people investigate their navel only to discover the soul is elsewhere."

Press to Sports Information Staff:  "Can someone interpret what he said?'

Sports Information Staff:     Yes, he said "go fuck yourself, dickwad."

Some of these reporters start their question with "this allegation" And then they go on to ask a question as they have facts. The question about legacy, alum who are embarrassed are just gotcha question. I guess that reporter only asks people who are unhappy. I am sure there are plenty who are in support of Jim. But that cannot be asked because it doesn't generate clicks. Bunch of unfair idiots.

I'm an outlier here:

I think Tom Brady cheated and destroyed the evidence and that degraded my opinion of him.

I think Harbaugh lying to NCAA investigators was dumb and out of integrity and far more deserving of sanctions that what he lied about.

AND...I think this whole sign thing is about as overblown and stupid as it gets. It just stinks of some weak-feeling NCAA person going after something they think they can get traction and attention on, when there is and endless list of actual major violations that they routinely ignore or let go. The amount of media attention and hyperbole it's gotten is insane, especially SI reporting on single-source hearsay stuff (I heard from another coach that...)

I mean, seriously, SI, how would a ball boy be able to understand what's being said in terms of play-calling on a sideline? Unless they are calling plays like I did when I was 12: "Ted, you run a button hook. Ralph, you block. Arnold, you go long."

Good grief.

SI is irrelevant and has been for some time. ESPN is moving in that direction outside of the fact that they broadcast live sports, and need BS commentators/entertainers to fill the gaps when live sports aren’t happening. The Athletic seemed to fill the void of serious sports reporting, but has shown itself to be of the Bar Stool Sports variety with this scandal. Outside of a niche blog like this, is there a spot for legitimately good sports journalism anymore? (I’d actually say the same thing about journalism in general, not just sports).

It still remains a mystery to me how anyone actually believed the deflategate B.S. I'm no fan of the Patriots, but that may have been the most heavily fabricated prosecution in the history of sports. Forget the fact that actual scientists who recreated the scenario found the claims bogus, hundreds of ELEMENTARY SCHOOL science experiments got press for showing the Patriots' balls from that game were within the expected PSI given the environmental conditions.

people who believed it either hated the patriots and will never hear any alternatives, or weren't paying much attention and just kinda absorbed what was being said and didn't care that much about it. And most everyone, except for the biggest die-hards, have mostly forgotten about it and recognize it didn't have anything to do with why the Patriots were so dominant for 20 seasons.

If we keep winning, this will be a weird footnote.

I've always believed that deflate-gate was a make-up call for "spygate", where the NFL actually was present for the destruction of evidence and, in the eyes of many owners, gave the Pats a pass for blatantly recording signals and lying about it, including a number of closed practices before their first three superbowls in the early 2000s. As an Eagles fan, I remember distinctly a number of players dumbfounded by the accuracy of the Pats RPS-like successes at SB 39, at a time when no one had accused the Pats of doing anything.

The linked piece is a good write-up on the whole situation, one that has some similarities to this mess but also some important differences such as:

1) The recording was done on the field, and continued after explicit orders not to do so

2) The NFL sanctioned destruction of evidence (can you imagine the NCAA doing that with UM and Harbaugh?)

I call BS.  Every time I went to St. Joe as a kid, it was 75 degrees and sunny.  We'd go to one of the many beaches and swim in the 55degree Lake Michigan water.  Then we'd go to Baskin Robbins to get ice cream and eventually we'd go feed the ducks in the river.  The temperature never dropped below 75.  Even when the piers froze solid with 6" of ice on them, it was at least 75 degrees.

You don’t think the ideal gas law exists?

I don't think the ideal gas law smashed Brady's phone.

And, my point in listing those other two things was not to re-argue them for the stupideth time, but to illustrate that I'm somewhat more objective in my assessments of Michigan-related people getting sideways of rules than is likely the norm here, and even I think the sign-stealing drama and media attention is just plain fucking dumb.

I figured you didn't intend to relitigate deflate-gate, but you are just so amazingly wrong that it had to be pointed out in hopes that you would come around and realize Brady didn't cheat.

Do you think the only reason Brady would want to keep his phone private is because it would prove that he was cheating at football, or do you think maybe there were a lot of other things on there that he didn't want to share with other people?

So yes, he didn't fully cooperate with their investigative process for which he was suspended 4 games. Not too dissimilar from the Harbaugh cheeseburger thing. The difference there is we actually were guilty of the minor recruiting violation. The similarity is that the real offense was the lack of cooperation (if you believe he was lying).

Take an inflated football. Leave it outside for a while. See what happens.

What will probably happen is that my neighbor's lab puppy will come running up to it, trip over his paws and fall on it, spend five minutes trying to get in into his mouth, succeed in doing nothing but covering it with drool, then pee on it and run away.

Which is still more interesting than watching Iowa's offense.
