Peters was treated like the third string QB, and absolutely played that way. Wilton Speight and John O’Korn took the vast majority of the snaps on Friday and Saturday. The gap between the number of snaps that Peters took on Saturday vs. Speight/O’Korn was greater than gap between Peters and Sessa and Hewett (they used him to practice against the triple option in prep for Air Force). Think about that.

Pretty good details including Kicker/Punter and Special team specifics.  Interesting that O'Korn looked significantly better that the golden boy.  Competition hones capabilities

Glasgow was backing up Hudson at Viper and Metellus at Safety. Spanellis has made up some ground. RT isn't close to being settled. Dwumfour will back up Hurst even though he has been out all spring. Still need to find Winovich's back up. Kemp will be an outstanding back up to Rashan. Bush has separated from Wroblewski a bit. Mason is still pushing hard behind McCray and in a battle. Washington and St Just played very well this spring and took advantage of Hill and Long's absence at times. QB battle is for that second spot. Peters has caught O'Korn. Seems to be a difference of opinion there. Black will start and DPJ will play a lot. Johnson is still behind McDoom. Robbins will take over at punter when he arrives. Don't be surprised if we still take a look at grad transfers along the OL/DL/Safety.

some depth early in the year. Solomon will surely get some time since he is stout & quick enough to play some (a la Gary 2016). Hope Hudson is stout enough to play some 3tech at least on passing downs. but I doubt it.

Don't you expect Vilain to backup Wnovich? Might backup by committee, but Vilain looked quick, strong and nice size at the UA game. I think he can go 15-20 plays a game.

Obviously a guess with true frosh who've not even practiced a down, but DL needs depth somehow.

Is Hill in a sort of dog house?  I don't want to read too much into Zordich's comments but pretty much all "insiders" of any sort are sounding he has missed a ton of spring.  Is this academics? Is this non stop boo boos? (Hi Brady)  It "feels" like he has seemingly missed >50% of his time this spring.

Black hype train just keeps choo chooing along.  I wonder if he will surprise and surpass DPJ production this year (see I just added to the hype train).

Grad transfer on OL would be fantastic even if it's a 6th or 7th guy.  Backup S would be nice too.

Only impression I gathered through all the write ups and interviews with the staff is that he's been a little dinged up but they want him to start working through those things more instead of sitting out.

Umbig11 - is that somewhat accurate or are there other issues?

That is huge and not expected - a lot of the star gazers on this board were upset when we accepted his commitment because he was "only a 3 star".

Now we are hearing that he is pushing one of our best players as an EE - that is amazing.

Edit - the comment above went up while I was typing this.

A grad transfer at DT and at safety would be welcome additions. We need more size along the DL. Hudson, Solomon and DIB will help there but the other guys we took at that position are small, although I'm really excited about Luiji Vilain. Hopefully that gets adressed in recruiting.

The stuff re the QB's here and above is the opposite of what Webb said. He thinks while it's still Speight's job right now JOK and Peters are really pushing Wilton and this will be a battle in fall camp. Wilton apparently needs to pick it up and the coaches aren't happy with where he is at.

Is that a watercolor filter on this picture to the article?

I don't want to kick off another tizzy on who the starter should/will be, but the notes on quarterback play directly contradict everything else I have heard. I'm not saying that Speight isn't still the starter and hasn't played well elsewhere in practices, but Peters kicked his ass again in the scrimmage in Rome and looked really good. Pretty sure Wilt even said something along the lines of him being the 3rd best quarterback that day. I don't know the qualifications of the writers at MaizeNBrew, but I know that the section in this article regarding the quarterbacks is not accurate.

Others who were there whose football eyes I trust (I did not make the mecca to Rome to watch the boys), as well as the scout video that I watched on twitter (I'm assuming the video that you are referencing). Peters (and O'Korn) played well above Speight - throwing and running - from everything I heard.

Gotcha. Yeah that was the video I was referring too. I assumed that's what you were talking about since the comments you made sounded similar to what Sam had said. Just curious if you read it elsewhere as well. That's the only video I know of unless there is some hidden Zapruder film somewhere. \__(-__-)__/

I think Peters keeps outperforming Speight in the basic quarterback functions - stronger arm, prettier ball, more accurate, better runner. I think Speight maintains his lead as the starter through his knowledge of the playbook, his vocal leadership and his ability to manage and navigate when things break down. Jim knows that Speight has a knack for doing the right thing when things get hairy, and Speight is extremely vocal compared to Peters. Peters is just naturally a quiet guy, so that will be something he has to work on to lead the team. I think it's a real competition but I don't think that constantly outperforming Speight in live situations in practice will be enough to win Peters the job, he will also have to demonstrate better vocal leadership and a comprehensive knowledge of the playbook like Wilton has. Both will be forced to pick up some new things they put in with Pep, which may benefit Peters (Pep loves Peters, as you would expect).

It's a conspiracy! A cover up! /s

I'm not sure why this is so hard for the Peters fan club to grasp, but he's not better than Speight. I'm not even convinced he is better than O'Korn based on the Spring Game. O'Korn looked sharp.

Yea that's what is funny is that okorn is looking the sharpest of the three, but I think with a smaller sample size. If while watching these three QB's it is not obvious who has the highest ceiling to you or anybody else I don't know what to say. There is one who looks the strongest, throws the nicest ball and has the strongest arm. Everyone knows who that is, but that doesn't meen they will start. Should not have to say who that is, but they did not start last year.

But we've seen OKorn and Speight in games, and we know that they sometimes mess up. Peters has never messed up during a game, so he's better.

That's how that works.

It's very unlikely that a redshirt freshman is better than a guy who just won ten games and put up good numbers. Why do sports fans hate probabilities so much?

Eh... there were about a dozen first time starters and 6-8 true/redshirt freshman that better seasons than Speight last year.

While I wouldn't say the odds are great, I also wouldn't call Speight's number "good" - he was about the 40th best QB in the country.
