Other Big Ten teams:
Ohio AP #4 Coaches #3
NW AP #18 Coaches #16
Wisconsin AP #24 Coaches NR (#27)
Michigan State AP NR Coaches #24
Glad to see Wisconsin not being penalized too much after that BS loss.

Michigan is #14 in the Coaches poll.

Seems about right for M. I'm still surprised Florida isn't lower and ranked below Ole Miss. TAMU should have dropped more than 4 spots.
September 15th, 2013 at 5:08 PM ^
They wouldn't do that to Alabama's strength of schedule...

I figured we be no higher than 17 or 18.
One positive from the game is that it ought to be a strong antidote to all the smoke that was blown up the players' asses by friends, media, family, fellow students, and random internet/twitterers after the ND game. 18-22 year olds are prone to smelling themselves a little too much after a big win.

why the hell should we drop? we clearly do not deserve to be in the top 25 right now. our ranking is nothing more than journalists pandering to our large fan base at this point. a top 25 team does not put up that kind of performance against akron
September 15th, 2013 at 3:45 PM ^
Dumb.

September 15th, 2013 at 3:46 PM ^
Well, first and foremost, the AP voters are not pandering to our fanbase specifically, so that's an incorrect assumption. Second, there has never - as far as I can recall - been an instance where a 4-point win of an ugly nature has taken a team from #11 in the AP to unranked, so precedent (and likely rational appraisal) would tend to disagree with you. Third, the requirements for being Top 25 are perhaps fortunately not reliant on your apparently stratospheric standards.
September 15th, 2013 at 3:52 PM ^
i believe that journalists are pandering to our fanbase in general not just on this week. I think we are way overrated. You're right an ugly 4 point win has never dropped a team from #11 to unranked. but let me ask you this. After yesterday's performance, do you honestly belieeve we are one of the top 25 teams in the nation? Because I certainly do not
September 15th, 2013 at 4:42 PM ^
Relax man. Good teams play poorly sometimes. It's one game.

Yeah, LSU totally shouldn't have been ranked last year becuase they barely beat Towson....
September 15th, 2013 at 6:02 PM ^
Here is some perspective, if you like.
Last year, Ohio State went 12-0. En route to that perfect record, they beat UAB by 11 (favored by 36), Cal by 7 (favored by 17), Indiana by 3 (favored by 19), and Purdue by 7 in overtime (favored by 17).
Sometimes good teams play poorly against inferior opponents.
If you want, you can continue this exercise:
- Favored by two touchdowns, Alabama LOST to Texas A&M at home
- Favored by 18, LSU beat Auburn by 2
- Favored by 42 points, LSU beat Towson by 17
- Favored by 14 over Purdue, Notre Dame won by 3
- Favored by 14 over BYU, Notre Dame won by 3
- Favored by 19 over Pitt, Notre Dame won by 3 (in 3 OT)
I could continue on, but the point remains the same.

Exactly what I expected. Dropped 4 spots because of the ugly win. 3 weeks from now once the madness of college football knocks a few teams off with upsets this game will be forgotten. As long as we keep our record #-0 we will be in great shape.
As I said in another post, the only way this really hurts us is if we are somehow one of 3 undefeateds we might not get the bid for the championship. There is plenty to worry abut between now and then, hopefully the team realized they have to be on point every week. It was a inexpensive lesson to learn as it didn't cost a W.

are we instantly better than TAMU because we won and they lost? NO!!!! we shouldn't be anywhere close to the top 25 right. If i had to rank us it'd probably be #35 or 36 right now.

No, you are allowed you express your opinion and others are equally allowed to point out how asinine it may be.
There are examples on examples of good teams barely winning games against people they should've blown out. A close win over Akron doesn't negate two good outings against CMU and Notre Dame. There are aberrations, this may be one of them.
That said, if we struggle putting away a bad UConn team, then obviously our concerns would be elevated.

to be completely honest, we don't deserve to be ranked
September 15th, 2013 at 3:46 PM ^
completely take out your fandom and allegiance to U of M. where would you honestly rank a team that beats a 4-37 team on a last second play? to me that's a team that isn't even close to the top 25. are we better than that? maybe. time will tell but as of right now i firmly believe that we don't deserve a ranking

because beating central michigan and a down notre dame when the team is extremeley hyped (first game/UTL) really project the true quality of the team. BTW did you see ND struggle against Purdue? the same purdue team that got taken to the woodshed against cinncinnati. clearly ND is as good as they were last year and a very quality opponent (sarcasm)
