Points allowed through first 8 games
Here are the points allowed through the first 8 games during the RR years:
2010: 240
2009: 188
2008: 230
Note that the 65 points from the 2010 Illinois game aren't even included in the 2010 total, as that was our 9th game last year.

Mike Jones!

That was the email I recieved when I originally did that....oh and did i metion they took 1000 points away from me and revoked me being able to up or down vote comments, as well as never giving me a point when I post replies....I guess thats a big no no
October 30th, 2011 at 10:19 AM ^
....I have not received any reprimand from the MGoGods.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:06 AM ^
It probably has more to do with the fact that you were quadruple-double posting everything for an entire week.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:59 AM ^
It was like the rapid fire button on a game controler...it went nuts
October 29th, 2011 at 9:02 PM ^
It was premature when people were throwing it out after the Minnesota game.
But now? After playing Purdue and N'Western...two teams known for good offense over the past 15 years + Sparty. This stat is VERY legit.
And it should be 110, because that last touchdown today was bullshit.
October 29th, 2011 at 9:06 PM ^
To be fair, so was the first.
October 29th, 2011 at 9:41 PM ^
Michigan got RPS'd so hard on that first touchdown, and to me it seemed like dumb luck that a screen was called right as Mattison decided to dial up the blitz.
The next time Purdue tried a screen like that on 3rd down, it got stuffed at the line of scrimmage.
October 29th, 2011 at 9:56 PM ^
Yeh that bltiz killed that screen, also some of the earlier tds were bs. Western michigan and sdsu had couple bad tds

Yes, believe in Brady Mattison
October 29th, 2011 at 9:06 PM ^
Can you please post the stats for the years previous to the RR years as well? It would be nice to have a thread praising the defense with some comparative strength rather than weakness
October 29th, 2011 at 9:15 PM ^
158 in 2007. This defense has gotten more than its share of turnovers this season, but its very, very improved.

2007 - 158
2006 - 101
2005 - 156
October 29th, 2011 at 9:17 PM ^
2011 - 117
2010: 240
2009: 188
2008: 230
2007 - 158
2006 - 101
2005 - 156
2004 - 147
2003 - 137
2002 - 180
Bottomline, RR had the 3 worst years (2 by far). Hoke has 2nd best which is pretty impressive since it is his first. Greg Mattison is the man, best defensive coordinator at M since Greg Mattison.
October 29th, 2011 at 9:23 PM ^
Wow. Almost to the level of the '06 monster with much less depth and no top NFL prospects to speak of. Mattison is my hero.
October 30th, 2011 at 12:56 AM ^
In all seriousness, it makes you wonder exactly how Schaffer and GERG could have been so bad, forced into odd schemes or not. There is not an appreciable talent upgrade this year besides maybe Jake Ryan.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:05 AM ^
Being forced to run a 3-3-5 when that isn't your area of expertise can make a lot of DCs look bad, especially when they've got to do with some dubiously-qualifed position coaches as well.
Not only is Mattison a clear upgrade over GERG, but the entire defensive staff seems superior. I'm very impressed in particular with the job Curt Mallory has done coaching the DBs. That group has done a 180 from last season.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:34 AM ^
However, the clear improvement of the DBs has a ton to do with it. Would they have improved as much under GERG? Probably not. Would they have improved at all? Very likely they would have. Good to see those guys get better in any case.
October 29th, 2011 at 9:18 PM ^
I be like dang.
October 29th, 2011 at 9:19 PM ^
It was 114 in 12 games in 1997. And it was under 100 in 1985 (I think 95 or 98). Also in 12 games.
October 29th, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
It was 98. Those 12 games include a bowl win against Nebraska. That's scary good defense.
That said, it's nothing next to the 1971 juggernaut. 421 points for against 83 points against. That's better than a 5 to 1 ratio. No word on where Michigan was rated in FEI.
October 29th, 2011 at 9:47 PM ^
Those defenses after how we struggled last year makes me a happy, happy man.
October 29th, 2011 at 9:26 PM ^
Imagine what happens when this recruiting class starts filling the positions in a couple of years.
October 29th, 2011 at 9:38 PM ^
Believe it or not, I think we had six 4 star recruits start on defense today - see below. Plus, eight upperclassmen and only one freshman. The cupboard isnt as bare as people like to think.
Defense | 1st String | Year | Stars |
DE | Roh 6'5" 269 | Jr | 4 |
NT | Martin 6'2" 304 | Sr | 4 |
DT | Van Bergen 6'6" 288 | RS Sr | 4 |
DE | Heininger 6'6" 295 | RS Sr | WO? |
WLB | Hawthorne 6'0" 214 | Jr | 3 |
MLB | Demens 6'1" 241 | RS Jr | 4 |
SLB | Gordon C. 6'3" 207 | RS Soph | 4 |
RCB | Floyd 6'0" 185 | RS Jr | 3 |

The only other senior, T-Wolf, will have his spot taken by Kovacs, the normal starter. Michigan will return 7-8 players on D which is still solid. The young D-line will need to step up, BWC and another interior player, and probably have Black bulk up and move over to SDE.
Roh and Clark at WDE, Black SDE backed up by Brink, BWC at 3 or 1 tech. Hopefully Ash and Q can step up and some freshman be ready to play.
October 29th, 2011 at 10:16 PM ^
Losing Martin and VanBergen will hurt a lot, but I think we can cover the Woolfolk loss pretty well.
October 29th, 2011 at 11:04 PM ^
It's only 4 and we have good dline prospects coming in so I'm not to worried
October 29th, 2011 at 11:39 PM ^
3 of 4 key spots on the line shifting in one off-season is not something to brush off. we're going to need an amazing spring session and productive summer/fall practices to truly make an impact in Dallas, etc.
October 30th, 2011 at 12:36 AM ^
losing 3-4 starters happen all the time to teams. Our defense will be fine and shouls be a little better than this years. Pipkins will probably get some play ... as will BWC, QWash and Ash. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the DE recruits get some play like strobel, godin, wormley. Clearly, with the staff only taking 1 DT this year our coaching staff is more worried about other positions. Losing 3 DL starters is a loss but that is going to happen to a lot of teams this year.
Por ejemplo.... Alabama loses 5 starters (1DL, 2LB, 2DB) this year and that is without Dont'a hightower, dre kirkpatrick or nico johnson (all 3 jrs) announcing if they are going pro or not... very possible they lose 8 starters on defense.
October 29th, 2011 at 11:44 PM ^
Losing Martin and VanBergen is big.

October 29th, 2011 at 10:22 PM ^
Pretty much the same, 1 less upperclassmen and 1 less 4 star.
Defense | 1st String | Year | Stars |
DE | Roh 6'5" 269 | Jr | 4 |
NT | Martin 6'2" 304 | Sr | 4 |

WLB | D. Morgan 6'1" 220 | Fr | 3 |
MLB | Demens 6'1" 241 | RS Jr | 4 |
SLB | J. Ryan 6'3" 230 | RS Fr | 3 |
RCB | Floyd 6'0" 185 | RS Jr | 3 |
SS | Woolfolk 6'0" 191 | Sr | 3 |

It is pretty impressive what we have done so far on D, but people shouldn't get too excited.. The B1G is not very good right now, and we haven't beaten or played anyone ranked outside of MSU..
Ill be impressed if we hold Nebraska to less than 21pts which i don't see happening at all
October 29th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
I'm actually more confident in our defense at this point than our offense. My reasoning is that lingering injuries to key players on our Oline might take their toll in the weeks to come. I shudder when thinking about our prospects if Lewan had to sit out a few games. That would leave us with one real backup tackle who has very little experience (Mealer).
October 29th, 2011 at 10:03 PM ^
Safe to say Mattison is worth every penny.
October 29th, 2011 at 10:04 PM ^
I actually enjoy watching the defense now, especially when we get heat on the quarterback. The GERG era was like a cancer which had metastatized but Dr. Mattison has brought a miracle cure.
October 29th, 2011 at 10:12 PM ^
blood in the water at the end of the game today. D simply teeing off. That was fun.
October 29th, 2011 at 10:31 PM ^
The other important thing to note is how the offense has helped the defense this year. Long drives that are ending in touchdowns goes a long way to helping the D. (despite the interception party our QB's have become this year). I think the commentators made a comment about Michigan being one of the leading teams on 70+ drives this season. They are also doing well on red-zone conversion.

And to think, I was in an argument a few days ago with my MSU friend saying that Greg Mattison isn't a good DC. His argument was because we gave up 28 points to MSU, my response: Are you retarded? Did you miss the last 3 years?
October 29th, 2011 at 11:56 PM ^
not just because he is an MSU fan (although that's qualification enough) but because the M defense only gave up 21 of those points. The D wasn't on the field for MSU's pick 6.
