Play of the Day- Friday Scrimmage
I already posted this in the Frank Beckman thread, but I think it deserves its own.
Great return, but definitely shaky coverage.

he didn't really do a whole lot other than run fast. That coverage def scares me.

for every good play in a scrimmage, especially long passes, runs, etc...there is an equally bad defensive play and vice versa.

the field looks pretty.

Yeesh, kick to the 10, no coverage to speak of. I'm gonna go half full here and say that was the 2s. Or 3s? Pleez?

I'm guessing that its not good we didn't see any white shirts until Stonum was blazing by them then? I don't know how we could have degraded too terribly much on this since our special teams coverage was very good last year.
August 27th, 2010 at 8:03 PM ^
Stonum must have a huge stride because he never appears to run very fast.
IIRC, our punt and kick-off coverages were pretty good last year so I'm not too concerned.
August 27th, 2010 at 8:24 PM ^
and remember that was 1/2 speed, coaches order, wait til he turns on the jets against UConn

We know Stonum is a good return man, but it's always hard to get excited about big plays against our own team. I've found myself rooting for the D a lot more in highlight clips. We all know we have offensive weapons. It would be great to see our D shut them down.

I thought the coaches had said that for kickoff practice everything is done at half speed (especially when it comes tackling because the kickoff is one of the most dangerous plays).
August 27th, 2010 at 8:07 PM ^
That would make me feel a lot better about this play.
August 27th, 2010 at 8:12 PM ^
Stonum didn't get the memo...
August 27th, 2010 at 8:28 PM ^
That was Stonum's half-speed. You can't see him when he's full speed.
August 27th, 2010 at 8:19 PM ^
That would explain it, but it seems odd. Most NFL coaches refuse to implement a "half speed" type of practice. It leads to more injuries than full contact does. A player that pulls up expecting the other guy to stop is vulnerable.

I would imagine a lot of the guys on the return team, are also on the kicking team. So many on the kicking squad may not be the ones we see play next Saturday.
August 27th, 2010 at 9:14 PM ^
odoms is running with him till the 40, waiting to give a block, any more plays of that scrimmage?
August 27th, 2010 at 9:15 PM ^
Probably not something to get too excited about either way, though it does reaffirm the fact that Stonum is a dangerous return man, the first UM has had since early Breaston. Let's see that same play on the open kick-off September 4th.
August 27th, 2010 at 9:18 PM ^
I prefer to think of this as a good play considering we knew that stonum could do this and has done this before. It may have been worse if this was a 2nd/3rd string returner doing this.

The guys in white jerseys today were all players you've never heard of, and there is no way they'd see the field this season besides UMass.
August 27th, 2010 at 11:46 PM ^
I hope you're right or else I'm worried about Vlad.

and there is no way they'd see the field this season besides UMass."
Maybe or maybe not, because if the jerseys are being worn by the guys who actually will wear the numbers during the season, the #5 chasing Stonum is Emelien, and the #15 giving chase is either Cox or Thomas Gordon.
If they gave these numbers to scout team members just for the scrimmage, that's another thing entirely. So far, I haven't found any information to prove either possibility.
August 28th, 2010 at 8:11 AM ^
15 is a white guy on this video, so he is a scout team guy for sure.

My worry was that the kickoff only got to the 10, and it didn't seem like it had much air under it: Stonum seemed like he caught the ball in stride.
I can't remember, does RichRod have a press conference scheduled tomorrow to discuss the Beanie Bowl? Anyone here have any notes from it? Yes...foaming at the mouth for all the up-to-date info for the next 7 days. Holy Crap...7 days!!!
