Peppers getting time at linebacker
247 is reporting that Jabrill Peppers is taking reps at linebacker, in an attempt to possibly shore up weaknesses in that group.

Makes sense. He's an incredible talent and he was lining up like a linebacker some of the time last year if memory serves.

And I was really hoping he'd throw that TD.

Give him the #98 Legends Jersey

The #98 Tom Harmon jersey was to Devin Gardner's career what the movie "Summer School" was to Mark Harmon's career...

I know, I still love it. I feel bad now for having made fun of it...
Other than playing Alotta Vagina in Austin Powers, I was shocked the hot Italian gal never had a bigger acting career...

Monster, Rover, I-Back, Tailback, Nose Tackle, Holder, Long Snapper, Upback, Upman, SAM, WILL, MIKE, Game Manager, Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, Referee, Down-marker crewman, Announcer, Hot Dog Man, Usher, Ticket Taker, Opposing Head Coach (poorly, I might add)
of the "wolfman" position last played at Michigan when McCartney's Monsters were in charge of that side of the l.o.s.? That player, Don Dufek, and I am aware of all the hockey fans on this site and how good he was on the ice, just impressed me with his sound play, and obvious instincts to be so honored with that position on defense that thinking of a board nick-name when the internet began providing sites such as these one of the easiest decision I've made in years.
I'm old enough to remember Dufek and the Wolfman (now that you mentioned it).
Just got back from 4 day in country road trip down here. Although I had to get my fix of Harbaugh on a daily basis, first time I've been able to set down and take time to share opinions as well as just read.
I have no idea, with the output we received in the bowl game, the apparent return of Issacs and the addition of Walker if this will be discussed further. Hopefully, there will be no need for it, but last spot I heard him mentioned as a possitibility was actually taking handoffs from the TB spot just as any of those named above would. Damn, IIRC, it was actually a member of the coaching staff making this statement and he was saying something like, "ideally it would be no more than 5 or 6 snaps a game." We all know, due to his highlight tape, what he's capable of there and many of the gurus said he would have been second, only to Fournette, if he had been recruited as a RB instead of his Safety. Young man is simply incredible. If this occurs, I want it to be in his final game, only for fun, and with our starting OLmen in with double TE formation. Don't care if they know what's coming. Just want to eliminate, to whatever degree possible, chances of injury. Would be fun, as stated, but hope we don't have to do it.
BTW: If anyone on the site has Mexico as a future vacation spot - and I don't like the obvious resort towns - do some research on both San Miguel Allende and Guantojuarto. I was/he's still in country, lucky enough to have my son get some time off from work in L.A. to visit me down here. We did a 4-5 dy roadtrip to visit two cities I'm considering as future winter destinations. Based upon my son's research, we decided on two simply beautiful, centrally located cities that,as soon as you emerge from one of the underground tunnels(true for both), you cannot help but to be a little awestruck at the likeness between either of these two and your typical Spanish, Italian cities with the majority of the housing built, almost always at a "to the eye" precarious and sometimes gravity defying positions. Results, with the various, vibrant colors are truly spectacular. And Guantojuarto, for some reason they attribute to the soil in that area of the couunty, does a natural "mummifaction" process of those that die within a certain area of that city. The "Mommyioso," I believe it was called, was truly well worth the price of admission.

I wonder if this is just semantics and he will play a similar role as last year, regardless of what he is called. If not, I would frankly prefer that one or more of our LB's step up, because the Hyrbid/safety depth chart isn't much better.
February 29th, 2016 at 3:18 PM ^
I doubt he is playing ILB, so this just means he's taking snaps at OLB which is within the purvue of Nickle Hybrid (CB/SS/OLB)
February 29th, 2016 at 3:51 PM ^
More accurately, he's getting reps at the SAM spot, which is a hybrid S/OLB spot in Brown's defense. It's the Stevie Brown role. It's an overhang defender playing anywhere from 3x3 off the EMOL or even 5x5, similar to what he did last year.
They may want him to play at that level more often because the safety depth is better than the LB depth. The concern is still that he can get swallowed up by bigger defenders if he plays too close to the LOS (the one thing he lacks is length); and while his great ability to submarine people in the open field has been seen, playing that close to the point of attack often leaves you out of position if you try it too often (which means you give up the edge).
I like Peppers as a hybrid player, but I have concerns with him getting too caught up in the box. Hopefully they design the defense in such a way that the SDE is more responsible for anchoring the edge (play head up on the TE for instance) so that Peppers can get some free run if he does indeed line up at SAM.

Agreed.
Having 305 guards crash down on 205 lb Peppers for 40-50 plays a game sure sounds optimal. Not.
Like last year we are going to be playing a ton of 4-2-5 due to personnel and whatever you want to call Peppers position are welcome to call it. "Linenicklebacker". He is not going to be playing a traditional LB role - he doesnt have the bulk for it and getting smacked by men 80 lbs more than him repeatedly is asking for injury.
February 29th, 2016 at 3:39 PM ^
Exactly. It's just semantics. Matchups exist all over the field, and football is about exploiting them all, you can call the positions whatever you want. But what exactly they "do" will be most important. Peppers job on defense will be, as simply as possible, coverage, run-spy, and blitzing. On top of that, punt-return (maybe kick too?), and it would be cool if he could be a threat to run the ball on offense, and maybe even a receiving threat too!

I would like to think that Peppers is athletic enough to avoid a 305 pound guard most of the time. In some schemes, the LB is supposed to take on the guard, but that doesn't mean you can't change the scheme.

Why not 6-0-5 and just crush the QB on his first step.
February 29th, 2016 at 3:17 PM ^
Can we just call his position Pepperbacker?
Seems like it will resolve most of this confusion.
February 29th, 2016 at 3:22 PM ^
He could have some sweeeet nicknames:
Jabrill "Ghost" Peppers
Jabirll "Carolina Reaper" Peppers
Jabrill "Guatemalan Insanity" Peppers

Upvoted because just hearing "Ghost Peppers" is damn SPIIIIIIIIIIIIICY!
February 29th, 2016 at 3:47 PM ^
why don't we just use the "Jar of Peppers"
Each Pepper has it's own uniqueness.

People need to stop trying to define him. It's totally fine to have 10 guys in regular positions and then the Pepperbacker wherever he's needed.
At the line...Peppers in the slot...no, wait, he's dropping back into the Quarterback position, as O'Korn splits out wide to his left side. The snap, Peppers fakes a pitch to Smith splitting off his right side, Peppers whirls and finds O'Korn wide open in the flat...O'Korn picks up a TREMENDOUS block from Jehu--who takes out 3 defenders!--and sprints into the end zone! Touchdown Meeeeechigan on what some here in the booth are calling the PepperKorn play. Oh, my.

Spring is the time to play around with this type of thing.
I wouldn't be shocked if Peppers was the WLB in 4-3 personel and the Nickel back in nickel personel.
