OT: Yahoo Report now ties MSU Asst. Dwayne Stephens to ASM via Email

Submitted by WorldwideTJRob on

This is a new report that just dropped moments ago, and it is starting to get harder and harder for the MSU basketball program to deny they did anything improper. The new report shows and email Christian Dawkins sent to his boss Andy Miller detailing that Stephens wanted to "trade" Miles Bridges & Gary Harris(assuming this meant Izzo or Stephens would convince them to sign with ASM) for the chance of obtaining Brian Bowen. It is a slow drip, but I have a feeling Yahoo Sports has a lot of these documents up their sleeve that they will reveal over the next few weeks leading up to March Madness.

I'm sure the MSU justice will be swift, and Mr. Stephens will be relieved of his duties to excise the cancer from their otherwise-pristine program.

Unfortunately, the way the world works, a corrupt institution is very unlikely to expell a member who could then tell on all. If you have been watching msu events over the last year, you will observe a protect mentality to keep these people in the fold and loyal to msu.

If in fact it was just an errant staff member, he'd already be gone. That says more about the likely state of corruption than any of the evidence released thus far.

At least we'll never have to hear about ed martin again. Cleaves, mo peterson etc. would have played for steve fisher if he wasnt exposed but magically committed to state after the scandal.

Of course he knew. There's no way the head coach isn't gonna know about multiple players getting money from a guy that hangs around the program. Jalen admitted on the documentary he "took care" of all of them, not just Webber. I'm not sure how any Michigan fan can think he didn't know anything.

I went to school with Mateen from 2nd grade to high school graduation. He was always the biggest Spartan fan and probably still owes me a dollar or two from our bets as kids for the UM/MSU football games. He was destined for MSU. Mo-Pete wasn’t heavily recruited out of high school and at that time Michigan was recruiting nationally. Antonio Smith, also a Flintstone was a more highly recruited player than Mo-Pete and chose MSU. Michigan also lost out on Robaire Smith, Antonio’s brother, a DT/DE that went on to play in the NFL. Those Flint boys were always about MSU. They weren’t going to Michigan.

The only "trading" John Beilein does is one of his wife's homemade cookies that he brings in his brown paper bag lunch every day, in exchange for TWO Snack Packs and a banana from from Saddi Washington's lunch.

But serious question, is there another team and coach that has zero to worry about the way our coach and team do? I mean, is there another coach this above the board?

Honestly, yes they exist, plenty of them.  And not to absolve Izzo but it truly is a whole coaching staff thing.  Some assistants are clearly in the game and doing what it takes to land these kids...some head coaches know, some I honestly believe do not.  A whole coaching staff and "organization" like Michigan's under John Beilein?!  Yea I think they exist...but may be the minority.  Hell I've a feeling lower level schools (SWAC, MEAC) fight amongst themselves and endure shenanigans to some extent for some of the leftover kids that aren't Power5 let alone MAC or MWC level caliber

I think you're right a few coaches might plausibly not know I just don't think it should matter. Whatever happened to "known or should have known" as a standard?

Coaches are responsible for their programs and staff. Izzo for anything corroborated in this report. Dantonio for Blackwell. Both for the endangerment of women on MSU's campus. Yet both of these supposed leaders are allowed to be insulated in situations where they're not responsible for anything that happens outside of a practice or game.

And payment definitely happens at lower levels; I know several MAC football and basketball dudes who received cash handshakes and nice loaner cars for free.

Yes.

I know someone that played soccer at Hope College that claims he got impermissible benefits.  A job picking up litter on campus where he didn't actually have to show up and an off campus housing at a discount that an alumni gave him, because he was on the team.

If Hope College Soccer is to some extent cheating....I would be shocked if MAC football and basketball didn't cheat at times either.

Assuming this is all true and that we are clear of all of this (which I expect), it’s amazing that we got any decent recruits. All those Beilein can’t recruit moments should be replaced by sheer awe that he’s done this well honestly.

does not mean a crime was not committed. Hence the charges of “attempted (fill in the blank)”.

But I still expect Don izzo to survive while his Capo Stephens takes the fall for this. Plausible deniability/insularity akin to la cosa nostra.
