Get Jim Harbaugh

They need Mike. Tough loss last night, but at least we got a point for getting to overtime. We are currently in first place in the division with forty points. They are having a good season thus far. We need to get a higher seed in the playoffs for a change. We have been to low recently.

I think you'll see a high seed this year (if they can quit leaving so many points on the ice in shootouts against middling-to-bad teams). The numerous Blackhawks/Penguins fans I deal with wanted to scoff when I said, "When Nyquist/Tatar/Sheahan/Jurco arrive, look out," now they're here. And they still have two of the best players of their generation, Pav and Z, leading the way.

Those two fanbases are right up there with OSU and MSU for me. "Red Wings are gonna be down for a while, brah, better join our bandwagon if you want to see wins!". Ah, yes, down for a while. For the Wings that means squeaking into the Playoffs in the 7 or 8 spot. For your team it means irrelevant basement-dwelling for the better part of a decade.

Wings fans thought the world of Yzerman and Federov, NHL greats who even at their very best couldn't hold a light to Lemieux and Jagr.

Now the Wings fans get to watch two great players in Zetterberg and Datsyuk, who like the Wings greats from a generation before, can't hold a light to the Pens' duo of Crosby and Malkin.

This past off season some of the Red Wings blogs were grumbling that Babcock might move on and that it would be in the best interest of both parties.  Sounds like that's not going to happen.

Question: Why does the title of this thread say Top 5 when the article says the "highest-paid coach" in the NHL? Details, but details.

Digression: Who are the Top 5 coaches in the NHL anyway? I can get to four easily with Babcock, Julien, Quenneville, and Sutter. I'm going blank on number 5 at the moment.

Thoughts: Obviously, it's a great for the Red Wings. The whole "Babcock-to-Michigan" thing always seemed outlandish, though it would have been awesome if it had/did happen. Babcock is one of the best coaches in the NHL, if not the best. Though it may not be the way he would run things (may be it would be?), he has proven that he can work with the Wings way of developing young talent.

I believe some of his better work is still enshrined in the Hall Of Fame here. Those were some epic meltdowns. We have a couple users who are pretty good at venting spleen during football and basketball games, but I don't think any of them match the intensity that this dude had. Actually, as a mod, I hope no one matches that.

Need to keep Mike, need to keep him happy.  I see him as the Phil Jackson of the NHL...keeps a lot of talented folks working well together.  NOW, if we could only get Stevie Y back into the organization somehow...

If Babcock to Michigan was actually a legitimate possibility before this, is there any chance another guy who's coached in the NHL would come to Ann Arbor? Like Dan Bylsma?

I'd argue that Franzen and Zetts are not playing great, yet this young team has had a extremely successful workmanlike season. This is due to great scouting of young players and the genius of Mike Babcock.

Franzen I agree with. Zetterberg is leading a first place team in points. It's only close because Datsyuk and Tatar have caught fire, while Zetterberg is in a bit of a shooting slump. Unless you are simply referring to the "eye" test (which Franzen will fail 90% of the time); I haven't seen enough games to dispute that.

I'm a Pens fan, and there was some hope that the Wings would let Babcock go (apparently your AHL coach is highly regarded in Pittsburgh too), replace him with the AHL guy, and there'd be a Crosby/Kunitz Team Canada reunion.

I and many in Pens Nation have a tremendous amount of respect for Babcock as a coach.

Probably Ken HItchcock should be in the Top 5 --at least he has a pretty good rep, although he has been around a bit --

The experts from Toronto, esp on the radio, all said that it was just a matter of time before Babcock went to TO to lead the Leafs to the Promised Land & Babcock would become the greatest man in the Land & maybe Tim Horton's would name a sandwich after him.  Coach of the Leafs has more scrutiny than the manager of the NY Yankees, or the mental health of Kim Jong Un.  Make the big dough & stay low in Motown.

On a side note, I seem to remember a long time ago, the old Lion Wayne Walker, became a broadcaster & they did not want him to be allowed to do the color for any Lion's games, because he might be prejudiced.

Can we start a movement to get Eddie O. away from any games involving the Wings?  This guy is the worst.  He should stay in Chicago or Pittsburgh where they love him.

This is unequivocally a very good thing

Was at the game last night, they played great. The break-outs were crisp and all 4 lines were buzzing. It's early but the Red Wings may have transitioned again from Yzerman / Shanahan ---> Datsyuk / Zetterberg ---> Nyquist / Tatar. A run not seen since the Canadiens in the late 60's / 70's?
