OT- What is the greatest length you've gone to in order to watch a Michigan game?

Submitted by SAMgO on

End of OT season so I've gotta take my shot.

Be it because of a fall wedding (should be illegal), your presence in Bolivia or some other far out foreign land, or other unforseeable circumstances, what's the greatest length to which you've gone to watch a game?

Also, totally unrelated but Fred Hansard commmitted to Florida. Some lolrutgers schadenfreude around the internet right now if you're into that.

Was in my good friends wedding and the bride gave us the OK to let someone in the front row hold an iPad in the front row facing us with the Michigan St.- Michigan game showing.  We were standing at the altar waiting for the bride to come down when Michigan won in 2012 on Gibbons field goal.

While I was in Iraq I couldn't watch the game but I listened to the game on BTN over the interenet at from 0400 to 0700 in the morning and then got to start my day after listening to the team lose to Iowa.

Not watch, but listen. My sister goes to MSU, my whole family is Michigan fans and I'm a Michigan grad. We went to MSU-Purdue for family weekend, and that was the weekend of the Maryland game that got moved from 8 pm to noon. So my dad and I were huddled up in 33 degree rain/snow mix with 40 mph winds in Spartan Stadium listening to Michigan v. Maryland on portable radios. Every so often we would just look down the row at each other and give a thumbs up. Easily the worst weather I have ever sat through a game in, though, and I was at Michigan-WMU in 2011 and Michigan-Utah in 2014.

Also, very into Rutgers schadenfreude.

January 9th, 2014. The Michigan-Nebraska thriller in MBB.

My grandmother who was a huge Michigan fan passed away that week (RIP), and I know she would've wanted me to see the game as I haven't missed an MBB game that did not conflict with Football in about 8 years.

I stayed for the the entire service up until about 8:45pm (ended at 9), and I drove home probably going 20 over the limit to get home in time. I was taking off my clothes in the car in freaking January while stopped at lights so I could throw it to the side as soon as I got home and get into my Basketball gear.

Got home at 9, but the ESPN tip times aren't always as advertised. It started at 9:09, so I got to change into my basketball gear comfortably.

Michigan won that game on a Derrick Walton and one. Nebraska had a chance to win it at the end, but the ball went off the rim. I'd like to think my grandmother knocked the ball off the rim.

Also in HS, I skipped the homecoming dance every single year to watch our Football games that day. Went to the parties after at night if and only if there weren't other big games on.

Haven't missed a Football game in over a decade. There's 12 guaranteed days a year for Michigan Football, and up to 15 if we're so fortunate. Leave me alone on all of those days we're playing because as far as I'm concerned, the globe stops spinning when the Maize and Blue are in action.

I had a date in 2011 but wanted to watch the game (bumblebee stripe game vs USF/MSU) at Noon so I skipped all the picture taking nonsense for the game.

It did not end well a couple weeks later.

Had a TCU vs Baylor (I think) game go way over the allotted time in 2014 for Penn State. Recently having moved, I only had my work computer. Michigan game wasn't being shown on ESPN. Genius I am, I went to a European site to watch game and my adobe flash was out of date. I downloaded adobe flash and boom RANSOMWARE...

Long story short I did not get fired from my job even though the IT guys hair caught fire. I did lose all my work files though. Thank god for backups!

During the 2004 Michigan-MSU game we had to call our aunt to give us play by play over the phone during overtime because the power went out. Anyone who remembers that game knows how windy that Saturday was.

I studied abroad for a semester in the spring of 2014. Was in Churachandpur, India, affectionately known to me as the place where Internet goes to die. I had an aircel USB stick for my connections. Streamed games on CBS during our NCAA run that basketball season. I was all by myself and didn't see any other non-Indian person for 4 months, so obsessing about UM, despite it being mostly offseason, got me through my struggles to thrive in that culture. Kept me connected to back home.

I watched the Sugar Bowl against VT in the bdubs in Lynchburg, VA. Was one of two UM fans in the place and one UVA fan rooting for UM, and it was as packed as I've ever seen it besides maybe during a fight night. Was even by myself as most of my friends were home on break (I couldn't go back to MI bc of work). I thought I was going to die when they made the call on that no-catch. It was very fun though.

Jimmy's last game as a Wolverine and I was living in San Fransisco so I got tickets.  The problem was my ex-wife was pregnant with our first kid and she was due right about the time of the game.  Fortunately for me he was born on December 13th so all was well (or so I thought)

My ex FORBID me from leaving and attending the game as she was still largely bedridden and wanted me to stay home to help her with the baby.  I didnt agree with her that she couldnt handle things for a couple of days so I went to the game anyways.

Son is just fine

Wife who forbid me from going to game is now an ex-wife

When I lived in India doing global health work, I watched UM games on my iPad. Given the state of my Indian wifi setup, it wasn't high def but it got the job done. The waking up to watch between 2-5 AM though really sucked

Bought tickets on a Stubhub-surfing whim to the Iowa basketball game a few years ago. Black ice from 696 all the way to Ann Arbor.  I got to 275 and decided that since I made it that far (and didnt want to try and exit and spin out), I'd just complete the trip.  Left with enough time to get there about 30 minutes early on a normal day, arrived at the under-8 minute timeout of  the 2nd half.  Michigan wins!  Promptly turn around and drive back home.

2007. Michigan vs Appy State.

I was in Florida. We were still at the condo and saw Michigan go up after Mathews caught that TD pass, and assumed that the tide was stemmed at Michigan would win 48-21 or something.

My curiousity got the best of me, went to a oceanside bar. Watched on ESPN the highlights that would cut in. Remember them showing the 40 some yard completion to Manningham, staring at the "scoring update" line at the bottom. I actually remember thinking, "I want to see "scoring update" not FINAL score."

The Final Score update flashed on the screen, and didn't show Michigan making the 3 to win.

I'll never, ever, ever forget that. I believe it was the first year of the BTN so ESPN couldn't show live coverage.

Suffering through a season sitting between FSU and PSU alumni watching parties at a bar in North Carolina.  Between the incessant tomahawk chant and intolerable "We are... Penn State" that whole year was a struggle to make it out to watch a game.

Retired in July 2011 and his congregation planned his retirement celebration on the Saturday of the 1st night game against ND. My wife wasn't thrilled that I was skipping the event until her dad said to me in front of her. "I wasn't planning on you being here with that game. Go to the game"

Also back in 1993 my grandfather (who played for tOSU in the '20's but didnt like them) Died the Friday night before the UM OSU game. My dad and I went to the game saturday then my mom, dad and myself took care of the funeral arrangments Sunday.

It has always been in my family DNA. Michigan football FIRST, pretty much everything else second.

I got home from Iraq at 3am (back to Michigan, actually) on the morning of the 2009 Notre Dame game. Rather than going home, I drove a couple hours to Ann Arbor and crashed on a friend's couch so I could attend the game.

Nothing extreme, but a bit of a mad rush to see them in person last year.

Remember how the Maryland game was supposed to be a night game at Maryland but then was changed to noon due to the fake hurricane? Well, I was scheduled to fly in on Saturday morning and I debated whether to still go, but decided to anyways.

Landed at Baltimore at 10:45AM, sped down 95 to College Park. Then had to sprint to the entire opposite side of the campus of where we parked to put my bag away in my friend's dorm room. Then had to sprint all the way back across campus to the game.

Only missed the opening kickoff. Turned out to be an awesome time.

SEVEN years in a row I was either deployed, on duty, or, after transferring to the reserves, had drill the weekend of the MSU game. Seven years in a row. I always found a way to watch, though. A couple times involved some minor bluffs and contrived "coincidences" but nothing ever too crazy, I did take my duties seriously. Also led to some pretty late nights on the other side of the world.

EDIT: I don't know how I forgot this one...the day of the 2012 game against MSU, I had to attend a relative's wedding in Columbus, OH. I waited until the last possible minute to go back to my hotel room and change into my suit so I could sit in the Buckeye-packed bar around the corner in my Michigan shirt to watch, as I believe it was on BTN which was not available in the hotel.

I suspect many stories will involve weddings...

I was engaged to my (now) wife. Her cousins were getting married in Franklin Lakes, NJ. Venue had no TV's.

I pretended to be sick so I could "rest" in the car and hear the end of the Penn State game - and of course heard Chad Henne to Mario Manningham TD. Of course, after that catch I was fine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofg5EiHxaX8

My wife knew I was faking illness once she saw the highlights in the morning. Have other similar stories, most involve weddings.

When I got married I had but two rules for my wife when choosing a date 1) don’t hijack people’s long weekends with our wedding and 2) we are not getting married during football season.

Cousin's wedding in Traverse City. My late uncle (UM grad too) and I watched the Manningham TD catch against Penn State with 8 seconds left in the hotel bar. Missed the entrance of the bridal party and all of the other "show" parts of the wedding.

I was deployed to Afghanistan in 2011- 2012. I was able to watch the Michigan vs. ND game courtesy of a USO feed we hooked up. During this time my squad was doing multiple patrols a day walking about 10 or so miles in the heat. After patrolling that day, I stayed up and watched the UTL1. Due to the time change the game started about 4:30 in the morning AFG time and ended around 7In the morning (AFG is 8:30 hours ahead). Promptly after the game I grabbed my gear and patrolled all day without sleep but didn’t care. It was worth it and made patrolling that much less miserable. Go Blue.

Rose Bowl game against Texas in 2005, and I wanted to watch it (Thank goodness for DVR now). I made the drive in 10.5 hours door to door.  A personal best. Key is to make pit stops as efficent as possible.

So there i was, running for my life. The setting: jungle. The weather: tropical. The folks behind me: young, angry, and carrying spears. But I was determined: there was a football game to be watched, goddammit, and I was going to watch it.

I cut through the remainder of the trees and soon was out in the clearing, leaving my trusted burros behind. I ran up and over the hill and soon saw my salvation in the clearing: a two seater prop with my lazy pilot out fishing. "Jock, start the engine!" I cried. "Get 'er up!" He finally got moving, and soon the bird was humming: I just had to get onboard.

Soon the arrows were flying, coming from all directions. I must say, still to this day I don't know how they all missed. I approached the river, taking (cliche, sure) a rope swing from the bank into to the midst of the current; it reminded me of my youth spent at the lake, although the stakes were a little higher this time. The plane was finally moving, ramping up for takeoff from the water, and all I had to do was climb on, all while the arrows and (you won't believe this) poisoned darts from a blowgun flew past me. I'm still here because they all didn't find their mark.

Soon we were up in the air, and I could relax. Well, except for the snake in the backseat. You know how I hate snakes!

We got back just in time for the game: the season opener of the 1981 season against Wisconsin. We were #1, and no way could we lose to those pesky Badgers. We lost, 21-14. Oh well, it just goes to show: no matter how much fans put into it, sometimes the old ball team still loses the game.

See this old clip for some highlights from my adventure: here

I was out playing football with my buddies pregame, and got my ring finger caught in a dudes jersey. Hurt for a bit, but I kept playing. 2 snaps later, I noticed that it was bent at an awkward angle. So went to St. Joes - turns out I had a pretty bad fracture. Got it set and in a cast in the first half. Dad drove me to buddy's house, and I was shocked to hear the score on the radio. I managed to catch the second half and eat some nachos with my good hand.

I've been before and you are sitting on a bench with 8-10 people at a large wooden  table drinking great beer, listening to the Oompah band play traditional German music (and then Country Road and Hey Baby every 45 mins). Around 5-6 after you've had your half a chicken the party really gets started. Everyone stands on the benches and signs along with more beer. Lots of women wearing those amazing dresses. It's one of the best parties I've ever attended and worth it at least once in your life. The majority of the time there was spent talking to locals as they try out their English on you and they were super friendly.

I will be making my fourth Oktoberfest trip this year and have never even thought about trying to watch a Michigan football game while there.  Set the DVR back home and watch it after your trip.  I love Michigan football, but there are way better things to do in Munich than try to figure out how to watch a college football game.

MGoBride and I went in 2012 and had a blast. I agree on buying the lederhosen. Get good ones though, not the crappy ones they sell only to tourists. I may go again this year (have reservations but the business trip I'm piggybacking on might be cancelled) and will remember the comment about the place near the Hauptbahnhof. When we lived in Zurich I once got the Hooters there to turn on the M v OSU basketball game despite that the entire bar was already engrossed with some soccer game. I didn't really want all the TVs changed over (just the one over the bar) but the manager was another American and for whatever reason switched all the TVs over and made the whole place watch college basketball. The patrons accepted it and watched the Michigan game.

I am out of market there have been times when watching and listening were very difficult, I paid upwards of $50 to Dish Network for the UMass game a couple of years ago.

I also made a call to ESPN a few years ago when one of their alternates was not showing the game.  I actually talked to a rep who was rude to say the least, after arguing with them for 10 minutes I asked to talk to either Rece Davis or Desmond, both requests were denied.
