OT: What Are You Watching / Show Recommendations

Submitted by Darker Blue on March 15th, 2023 at 6:28 PM

Hey MGoPeople,

Wondering what everyone is currently watching on the TV. Here's a list of things I've watched and think you should also watch.

  1. The Last Of Us. It was wonderful. Watch it
  2. The Leftovers - Another HBO show. This one was also pretty awesome. Definitely thought provoking.
  3. Narcos and Narcos Mexico - Finally got around to watching these gems. Both of them were fantastic in my humble opinion.
  4. The Queens Gambit - I was so bummed out that it was only 7 episodes. This show was amazing
  5. Barry - Season 4 in April. Bill Hader is awesome.
  6. Ted Lasso - The best thing on the TV right now.

Give me your lists and recommendations. What are you watching

See, I would have gone a different direction. It's not so much that he mocked the reply that was offensive to me. It's that his jokes weren't funny. Typewriter, Poloroid, Blockbuster?  Maybe try some of these "jokes" out on your goldfish before putting them out here for the rest of us to consume.

Really enjoyed the new Luther movie. If you haven't seen the series (especially seasons one and two), you're missing out.

The Leftovers was one of the greatest shows of all time.  I got my wife to watch and she still sends me pics of Justin Theroux shirtless.

Ted Lasso - Currently

The Last of Us - My wife has moved on to Pedro Pascal

The Wire - because I'm going to beat a dead horse and say it is the best show of all time.

I need to watch Better Caul Saul - I just haven't had time.

Regarding the Wire, I didn't love it until the episode Kima got shot in the first season.  After that the show owned me.  The second and fifth seasons are probably my least favorite.  Season 4 is the best season of TV I have ever seen.  I just love all the characters.  It is certainly a different type of show.  I hope it wins you over.

With the Wire, every word uttered is important. You should only watch when there are no distractions and put the phone away. It took me 2 episodes to get it.

It delves into a metaphorical wire that connects everyone in society and how the institutions are more important than the individual. Each season has a theme, the public schools, the dealers, the media, the unions and of course politics and they all intertwine and overlap. It is a literary masterpiece.

Saul hits overdrive in the final season.  I don’t think there are 3 better consecutive episodes of any show than “Plan and Execution,” “Point and Shoot,” and “Fun and Games.”

I will say that it did drag a little bit in the last Gene set of episodes.  There was just not quite enough content at the very end to propel the story any further.

I've heard great things about Poker Face but haven't checked it out yet.

About 10 years late to the party on this one, but the MGoGirlfriend and I have been watching "Justified"  and have been enjoying it very much. Recently started Season 2, when UM's Margo Martindale has a major story arc.

And Season 3 of "Ted Lasso" drops today. Huge fans. We're also fans of "Only Murders In the Building," "Ghosts," "Alaska Daily," and "Resident Alien."

I just started Season 2 of "Perry Mason" (certainly not like the Raymond Burr version!) And while I don't care for "Yellowstone," I ate up the prequels "1883" and "1923." Great stuff.

EDIT: Forgot "Poker Face," which I didn't think I'd like, but the MGoGirlfriend wanting to watch, so I went along. Loved it. It's a combo of 70's crime dramas and today's realism, with a good chunk of humor mixed in. And the list of guest stars is impressive. We got to the end of the season and had the same reaction: "But I want mooore!"

And as a change-up, we watch "All Creatures Great and Small" on PBS. I like the period-piece stuff, and it reminds us both of the old days of Sunday night television, when there were family-style shows on like "Lassie" or "Wonderful World of Disney," and you'd watch until it was bedtime because you had school in the morning. It's total comfort food TV.

I watched Justified when COVID began and it’s probably one of my all-time favorites.  Each season just kept getting better.  And I hear they are making a sequel set in Detroit.

Ted Lasso, Only Murders, Ghosts and Resident Alien are also ones we enjoy.  I look forward to the 2nd season of Perry Mason but won’t start it until more episodes drop.

I might need to try Alaska Daily since it appears your likes are very similar to mine.

There are two unexpected pleasures out on TV now, both in the Star Wars universe.

Andor.  Which might be the show of the year, or really, the best show in recent years.

Bad Batch.  It's animated and somehow, not a single bad episode.  I can't believe how much I like it.  It's compelling.

A third is Mandalorian, but that is well known and not unexpected.

Our Flag Means Death (HBO) is something I can't recommend enough although it certainly won't be for everyone.  But for some give it a couple episodes and let it wear on you to get where things are going and the appreciation will come.

The Leftovers is a show I started, randomly, maybe 2 years ago.  It hadn't gotten these rave reviews quite yet that I saw.  Then over the last year, 18months I see it in these lists of great shows.  And here I am restarting it again because I only made it through 3 episodes the first time because it wasn't quite doing it for me.  It still isn't and I've gotten to episode 4 or 5.  I'm going to keep going but I have to assume it "picks up" a bit it the coming episodes or maybe next season?!
