OT - Umass to jump to D -1A, join MAC
seemed like they're ready.

I feel remotely better about our performance against them.
December 17th, 2010 at 2:51 PM ^
I was at that game, and I still feel no better about it... But - along that line of thought they are probably an upper tier MAC team if they were in the MAC this year.
December 17th, 2010 at 1:00 PM ^
I respect this. I still never want to see them in the Big House again. Is that rude? Probably.
December 17th, 2010 at 1:01 PM ^
Interesting. Does anyone know if App State is still considering the jump?
December 17th, 2010 at 1:18 PM ^
They are still looking at jumping into the Big East but the story I saw said the study to determine if they jump may take a while. I bet they wait until the Big East is about to implode and become a Conference USA or WAC level conference, losing their AQ status.

I was in Boone NC in Sept10 wearing my M garb of course. I went on campus to discuss the state of affairs and reperesent. They are still geeked about kicking our ass. This is the impetus to make the jump to 1-A. They have a small campus and will rely on alumni and the famous win to carry them in 1-A.
I give my props to App St, They deserve it.

Still don't know how we only beat these guys by 5 points.
December 17th, 2010 at 1:07 PM ^
Bad defense?
December 17th, 2010 at 1:08 PM ^
It could have something to do with being up by 18 with just over 5 minutes left and taking the foot off of their throat (and Hagerup dropping a longsnap)
December 17th, 2010 at 1:12 PM ^
guys, it's the picture, the self-proclaimed Minuteman, back of pick-ups, drinking beer, looking at a border......
December 17th, 2010 at 3:50 PM ^
Sometimes we play to it...Defense doesn't help situations like that.
December 17th, 2010 at 1:02 PM ^
Being the Minutemen and all...
December 17th, 2010 at 1:07 PM ^
They should dominate the MAC in water polo...
December 17th, 2010 at 1:10 PM ^
And football.
December 17th, 2010 at 1:09 PM ^
I remember listening to the pregame and Beckman said the team we played was aided by mass tranfers from FBS schools (I thought he said 5 alone from Syracuse). They played tough, so I'm not taking anything away from their performance at the Big House (god knows I was scared) but they won't be able to poach from FBS schools when they make the jump. Should be interresting dynamic in the MAC, though.
December 17th, 2010 at 1:11 PM ^
When they were in A2 they played great and I though their fans where really classy. We had a blast with a group of UMass fans and players parents before and after the game. Plus they were very appreciative of little things like me offering to take a picture of them in front of the stadium after the game.
I think they will do well in the MAC. Just watch out for Rufus!

Marcus Camby and that other beast named Roe were unstoppable back in the day
December 17th, 2010 at 1:47 PM ^
...and his "methods" had a little to do with that.
December 17th, 2010 at 1:48 PM ^
he leaves a little grease everywhere he goes

Don't forget about the gunner, Mike Williams. I saw a UMass-GW game live back in the early 90s and watched Williams single-handedly beat GW in about 5 seconds by: (1) hitting a 3 and getting fouled, (2) missing the free throw and getting the rebound, and (3) hitting another three. I remember my buddy and I got seats in the GW alumni section and we were jumping up and down over witnessing the amazing feat. Needless to say, the others in our section were not nearly excited.

Williams was like Chuck "the rifleman" Person
December 17th, 2010 at 2:31 PM ^
they would probably want to stay in the A-10 for hoops
December 17th, 2010 at 1:32 PM ^
Argh geography. Put 'em in the Big East, it'd hardly affect the football strength of the conference.
December 17th, 2010 at 1:46 PM ^
Get their feet wet in the MAC, then help fill out the Big East. They're a natural rival to UConn.
December 17th, 2010 at 3:52 PM ^
The MAC is entirely contiguous even with UMass... they do have teams in New York and Pennsylvania, you know.
December 17th, 2010 at 8:11 PM ^
Yeah, Buffalo, New York. That's like saying Memphis is a geographical fit with the ACC.
December 18th, 2010 at 1:05 AM ^
Like putting Iowa in a conference with a bunch of Great Lakes schools?
December 17th, 2010 at 2:11 PM ^
Does this mean GVSU bumps up and takes the spot of UMass?
December 17th, 2010 at 2:15 PM ^
This marginally hurts Big East schools like UCONN and Syracuse, as well as BC.
December 17th, 2010 at 2:37 PM ^
you would think BC would be in the Big East due to location, religious identity, and tradition but they actually went to the ACC a while ago. No one knows why. No one cares either.
December 17th, 2010 at 3:27 PM ^
IIRC, they paid a penalty to move to the ACC.
December 17th, 2010 at 3:18 PM ^
I cannot wait to see the UMASSacre of my Alma Mater.
December 17th, 2010 at 3:45 PM ^
Oh no, poor Eastern...maybe UMASS and Eastern can switch places?? Seems like a win-win to me :)
December 17th, 2010 at 5:53 PM ^
App State up to D1A while we're at it. Whatever makes us look better.
December 17th, 2010 at 6:25 PM ^
UMass football has been doing pretty well in recent years in the FCS.
My force powers tell me there will be many embarrassing ass kickings of EMU and Bowling Green in the future.
December 17th, 2010 at 10:05 PM ^
Coach Clawson will have them in fighting shape before too much longer.
December 17th, 2010 at 10:46 PM ^
They would have beaten the piss out of Western this year. I'm a WMU grad. The MAC is a good fit and they might have a Marshall/Temple trajectory.
Yes, I follow MAC football.
