OT: Ty Detmer to be BYU's OC?

Submitted by WichitanWolverine on

I just came across this on Facebook. Apparently BYU has hired Ty as their OC.

This is a pretty lackluster hire in my opinion since he has zero college coaching exerience. I sort of understand bringing the hometown hero back, but I personally don't see this translating into wins.

I'll grant you the Google thing, but there are almost certainly lots of people who know a great deal about college football who don't know who Detmer is. Anyone under 23 or so wasn't even born yet when Detmer was playing. I consider myself "old" and the bulk of his college playing days happened when I was in junior high.

I actually think it's an upgrade from BYU's OC this year. The OC this year took a lot of heat for being too predictable and running basic schemes. In Ty Detmer they are hiring a Heisman trophy winner and 14 year NFL vet. That can certainly help with recruiting. I do think there will be a learning curve though, since being the OC is not the same as being a great QB.

Utah tried something similar with Brian Johnson and that went not good. Just because you're a good college QB doesn't mean you know how to coordinate the whole show.

Woodson is the Greatest of All Time in the Modern Era of the NFL (trailed by Brian Dawkins, Champ Bailey, Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed, IMO)

Running a secondary is one thing...but coordinating that with DL/LB play vs. offensive scheme is a whole other operation. Not saying he wouldn't be knowledgeable but you'd want a couple years to transition into that role, IMO.

I don't think it matters. Woodson should coach before being a defensive coordinator.

I don't think anyone should just jump into a coordinator level position at a P5 (or similar level) school. At least be a position coach for a couple of years and learn what coaching is about at that particular school. Learn the nuiances of recruiting. Everything, then if you slide into a coordinator role, fine.

I also think if I ever made an exception, it would be for a QB being an OC. Because while I wouldn't hire Peyton Manning to be the OC if I'm Tennessee...he wouldn't have to wait long.
