OT: Tigers Playoff Chances with 10 games to Play

Submitted by LS And Play on

The Tigers (82-70) are 0.5 games up on Baltimore (82-71) for the wild card with 10 games to play. They have 3 at home against the Royals, then 4 more at home against Cleveland, and 3 at Atlanta to end the year. How is everyone feeling about the Tigers in the last week of the season?

Too many gaps in the batting order, and Miggy's not Superman anymore. Unless he catches fire for these last 10 games, don't see much chance. Also worried that our younger starting pitchers are beginning to wear down.

Where are the gaps in the batting order? Our platoon of 3bs have produced well.a Who is a gap other than McCann and Salty? We still go Kinsler, Maybin, Miggy, VMart, JD, Upton....the same starting 6 we have had all year. In fact, our lineup is the same minus Castellanos. We still have a very good lineup. How are our young starters wearing down? Boyd has gotten stronger as the season has gone on. He is throwing harder every start and just arguably pitched his best game of the year (I think he had a shutout earlier). Daniel norris is pitching well with a mid 3 Era. Fulmer's numbers have been higher in the second half but if you take out his Cleveland aND Boston starts the last two months, he hasn't given up more than 3 runs in any of those starts.

The fun part is Tigers playing playoff type games every game from here on out I don't know if they make the playoffs but meaningful games in late September are enjoyable. Play Ball!!! Go get 'em Tigers!!!

Maddening season but 10/10 for drama. Last 2 weeks are why baseball is so great. No other sport can match the daily highs and lows of a race in baseball.

except that too many teams qualify. Baseball season may be too long, but every season it provides at least a couple of races right to the last day or two. Though the divisional races are all but over this year, both leagues have wildcard drama that might take multiple tiebreaker games to finally sort out which teams move on. Imagine the KAOS if the AL ends up with a 4-, 5-, or even 6-way tie for the wildcard!

Than I was a week ago. They were 3 back, and are now suddenly 0.5 up.

The good thing is that Baltimore is in a bit of a free fall and they have a three-game set with the Blue Jays. One of them could be completely wiped out by the end of that series. The Yankees also play Baltimore and the Jays so that entire division is just going to war.

Kansas City is done from making the post-season so who knows how much effort they'll bring.

ESPN still has Zimmerman listed in the Indians series, and I really hope that is a misprint. That's a guarenteed loss if he starts.

I doubt Zimmerman starts against Cleveland. The latest update from the Tigers org is that he will be throwing a simulated game on Monday, which would likely make him unavailable to start that week. Depending on how he's feeling after Monday though, I wouldn't be surprised to see him come out of the bullpen. If he is truly healthy and is able to pitch effectively, he could be a real asset from the bullpen.

As others have noted -- Houston and Seattle remain HUGE threats, given that they play the league bottom feeders, while the Tigers contend with KC and Cleveland.  I think we need to go 2-1 against KC; 2-2 against Cleveland; and 3-0 against Atlanta.  A 7-3 finish may be enough to get us in.

And despite those misses and Zimmerman's injury the Tigers have a top three rotation and solid bullpen. Pitching really hasn't been the problem, if anything it's what has kept them in the race. It's really that the offense has been scoring in bunches and then going silent for pretty long stretches, so some possible winning streaks have gone by the wayside. The injuries to JD, Nick, Cameron, etc haven't done them any favors.

Well, my Royals are playing like shit again so that is good for you. I'm torn because of the divisional rivalry, but the last 2 playoff years have made me fucking hate Baltimore and some of this prick fans. Namely that Jason Lacanfora prick. Go Tigers

I believe the Tigers will make the playoffs.  They play a KC team that is out of it, a Cleveland team that has secured the division, and a horrible Atlanta squad.  The Orioles finish with Arizona, Toronto and New York.  The Tigers have an easier run-in, should make the playoffs, and then hopefully fire the incompetent Ausmus after the season has concluded.

Through the year the Tigers seemed to beat their tougher opposition, except for Cleveland unfortunately, and lose against the weaker teams.  So this final 10 games is a little scary.  Perhaps it speaks to a lack of focus.  But the final stretch should get the guys focused and I predict they'll go 8-2 to finish the regular season and snag a wild card spot.

I'm more interested in how Baltimore does.  They've got the Diamondbacks then the Blue Jays and Yankees.  If they play decently they'll catch Detroit.  I also do think that at some point Detroit should break out against Cleveland, so maybe that time is now.
