OT - Some speculation PAC12 season about to be canceled for rest of year

Submitted by UofM Die Hard … on November 13th, 2020 at 4:32 PM

Oregon, Washington, California gov's all signed 14-day travel quarantine for those going into those states. Rumor is that this is the end and they wont bother to pick it back up after...whatever happens next.  I did hear that games this weekend will continue for all adhering to the guidelines, but then ...poof done.

Stay safe all, god bless

I know people keep rooting for Michigan to not play, but if we have any shot at Harbaugh heading out the door at season's end, it would need to be an apparent necessity on the field.

I'm not saying I am rooting for Michigan to get creamed, but if things are going to be this bad, id rather see the bandaid get ripped off now than wait yet another year of more of the same.

" We gotta take a swing at finding better than "got way outcoached by Mel Tucker" "

Yeah, because the revolving door of head coaches and assistants has worked out so very well.

When was the last time we had an offensive class that worked under the same system for four years?

Using wins/losses this season as a precipitating event to fire a coach is mind-numbingly stupid. Just like most of everything this year.

Somewhat disagree.  There is a reason his contract hasn’t been extended.  It would be recruiting suicide to wait until the end of the contract for an extension.  If it was a mulligan year, why was it not  extend before/as the season started/cancelled/restarted?   Some bar has to be crossed to get an extension, right ?

I think MICH will win. If we dont jump offsides and CBs not grabbing it will be a big improvement.  And I think Gattis will put some jet sweeps and screens and QB runs in. If we do that it's Got to be better.  If team.playing same O and same sloppy D penalties then can beat themselves wont matter whom we play.

No one seems to get it. I look for the same mistakes again tomorrow.  This inexperienced offense and defense need reps. You don't make up for spring ball and non conference games by having played three BUG games pun intended. This is like Harbaugh under normal circumstances sitting all of these inexperienced players out of spring let them go thru fall camp and then sit the out if the non conference games and throwing them out there for the BIG opener and tell them to play as a cohesive unit.

Wow what is it with the internet where people just take what you say and put their own meaning on it?

Let me put it this way: if my doctor tells me I should go get bloodwork done because he's suspicious I could have a horrible disease, and I should do it soon because it is treatable if I get diagnosed early enough, I'm sure as hell gonna want to go right now rather than wait a year.

It’s a ‘shitty dumb season’ for everyone, not just UM...getting embarrassed by MSU and IU has nothing to do with Covid. It has to do with the coaching and talent on the field. My belief is we have the talent to beat everyone on the schedule except OSU, but the coaching won’t allow for that to happen.

Yes, some counties have enacted restrictions across a handful of beaches, notably those that are state parks (like Golden Gate Recreational area). Parking lots are closed in some recreational areas and camping sites are either closed or scaled back. But of the state's 1500 beaches, I can count 9 that are actually closed (2 of which are on tribal land). I guess my main point is that the great majority of beaches remain open to the public and remain accessible by foot, bike, and - in most cases - cars. The restrictions are not closures, and - yes - you can certainly run on the other 1491 beaches that aren't closed.

As far as the satire, I didn't see news about Governor Newsom's party. If he violated Napa County's current policies, then - yeah - that's pretty crappy. Admittedly - I'm not gonna throw a rock at a glass house - because I've probably violated several state and county policies myself. Between some personal and work travel, various birthday parties and get togethers, and the occasional lost mask, I'm sure I've breached some recommendations. I try really hard to be compliant and mindful, and I certainly aim to be part of the solution as opposed to the problem. Occasionally, I screw up though and that's on me...

Fair enough and always appreciate seeing humility which is very rare in today's society. I am right there with you not always in compliance and working towards a greater good, but when these elected officials do not even follow their own rules that are in place it's hard to keep them credible. The old term "politicians work for us, not the other way around" gets older by the day.

Yeah, regarding the lack of utility of politicians...

whether the universities or local communities or even your own household, a lot of the way fwd is on us from the ground up. Obviously we need support "from above" to help hospitals, fund low-cost testing etc... but many of the most potent tools are just our choices every day (which I know you already know, not trying to preach here).

Just the kind of comment you’d expect from a penn state fan. Rube logic at its finest. Newsom has by virtually all accounts handles the pandemic better than most governors, especially given the states huge population. But don’t let facts get in the way, Opie.

For those curious about the incident cited:

https://www.politico.com/states/california/story/2020/11/13/newsom-faces-backlash-after-attending-french-laundry-dinner-party-1336419

I don't know whether the Animal Farm character is the best comparison, but I think I catch NittanyFan's drift. It does seem that some animals are more equal than others in California.

There's something similar ("Courvoisier moment") in this look at Sargent Shriver's life:

I've recently learned of some policies he's behind about deporting inmates who've already served a lot of their time...and some those inmates were instrumental in fighting the wildfires.  One I read about last night, had mere weeks left on his sentence and was hospitalized after a tree fell on him while firefighting.  Yet he's being sent back to Laos where he lived decades ago while only a baby.

We as humans gotta do better.

TrueBlue2003

I read about that as well.  For the record, they're not deporting people, they're just handing them over to ICE for deportation hearings as required by ICE. Been a long standing policy and most states do it.  CA is obviously not unfriendly to immigrants and could potentially use sanctuary state laws to avoid working with the feds on these cases, but they have long elected to turn over violent criminals that the feds want to deport instead of providing sanctuary.

It's insult to injury that a firefighter might be deported but that's how all other non-citizens that commit violent crimes are treated.

It's unlikely this guy is actually deported since his ethnicity isn't even even recognized as citizens of Laos, but it makes for a better human interest story when that's ignored.

Bull kaka.

Newsom has had a "rules are for thee, not for me" attitude from Day 1 (e.g., his winery up in Napa never closed back in the spring, despite his edicts that all other wineries and beaches close up in the North Bay area).

His behavior is especially tone-deaf given the rather over-the-top Thanksgiving guidance he released a few weeks ago.  Net, it is absolutely fair to call out Newsom for that.

I've seen surveys that show that Newsom isn't exactly doing great in terms of approval rating amongst his citizens either.

As for me calling him out ..... that has nothing to do with me being a Penn State alum.  You brought an absolute irrelevancy into the discussion.  You may as well have mentioned my skin color, it's just as irrelevant as regards having an opinion on Newsom.

The "Opie" comment was also unnecessary.  Overall, nearly 100% of your post was, to use the phrase I used at the beginning, "bull kaka."

In Chicago's quarantine rules, there is now an exception when traveling in from some states if you have proof of a negative test from within 72 hours leading into your arrival in the city.*

I'm not sure if these states have any similar stipulations, but that would seem to be a workaround for football programs where everyone is regularly tested.

Technically in Chicago it still wouldn't work if there were a B1G team within city limits because there is a long list of states (including, MN, WI, IA) that require a quarantine no matter your test results, so may not actually be a solution.

*From a scientific POV this actually seems a bit unsound because say you somewhere, get a negative test that you took on Friday, party all weekend, then come back Sunday you're technically cleared without quarantine even though you very obviously could have contracted COVID between testing negative and returning.

One unremarked about thing is when college football was/is hoovering up tens of thousands of these tests in September and October to test everybody, it was reasonable b/c the US had plenty of capacity.

Now? States are increasingly only allowing people to get a test only if they are also showing symptoms--having exposure is not enough. And everywhere, labs are starting to decrease turnaround times due to high demand. In that situation, does it make sense for so many tests to go towards making sure Nebraska can play Penn State?

I would completely understand why the Pac-12 might pack it in. If things progress as poorly as they have the past two weeks, the B1G should consider it as well (they won't -- there will just be 1-3 cancellations every week, as we muddle through to a final game).
