OT: So GERG's beaver goes back to his days in the NFL?
Just typing that line is difficult. I have never seen this posted on this site, so apologies if it was up here long ago. Thanks to EDSBS for actually finding this video of a 1997 interview with GERG and some of his players about the beaver, it "being out" according to Romanowski and even one beaver hanging on a noose(!). You get about 30 seconds into this and the wheels will literally come off your brain because we hired this guy. I would suggest getting up and taking a short walk around to sort yourself out, it helped me.

It was posted on here a while back, but always a good thing to brush up on the beaver.

he was d-coordinator there for a couple of years (2004-05 i think) so he's familiar with mack brown buuuuuut still GERG
September 9th, 2013 at 5:00 PM ^
kind of hard to find a DC mid-season. Gerg was available (shocking, I know!)
September 9th, 2013 at 5:13 PM ^
Gerg was actually on their staff already as some kind of "analyst," which I guess helps to explain the move.
The fact that he was already on their staff really shows how much nepotism there is in this game. Once you rise as high as coordinator, you'll basically never want for a job in the sport again.
September 9th, 2013 at 5:14 PM ^
I'd say it also explains Texas giving up 550 rushing yards to BYU.
September 9th, 2013 at 11:20 PM ^
hmm. then they'll need someone to replace the "analyst", and since they're hiring GERG they will also need a "therapist" and I have JUST the person to fill both roles.

Never gets old
September 9th, 2013 at 6:17 PM ^
yes and no... there's no shortage of "defensive quality control" or "senior offensive consultant" jobs (to say nothing of the tradition college coordinator -> NFL TE coach demotion promotions), but after a while you'll be replaced by younger models. Witness DeBord.

But Michigan State hired Jim Bollman off a reviled tenure running Ohio State's offense, and Michigan State now has an offense that looks to be making history.
September 9th, 2013 at 5:07 PM ^
I don't think you can put that one on Bollman just yet.
September 9th, 2013 at 10:10 PM ^
Yes you can. Great coaches make immediate impact. So do bad coaches. Jim Bollman is a terrible coordinator. He runs an offense that has actually scored less than its defense. If that's not on coaching I don't know what is.

Wonder if he is bringing the beaver to Texas.
I mean the beaver is the most diligent worker in the animal kingdom so it only makes sense.
September 9th, 2013 at 5:08 PM ^
Rumor is that he's already purchased a stuffed Bevo.

Memory lane. Thanks fella.

So, GERG was involved with Texas prior to this as like, an analyst or something right? Like he's on the staff? Or is Mack Brown trolling the AD?

In his final press conference as Syracuse coach, after the Orange had concluded a fourth straight losing campaign (3-9), Robinson likened his relentless positivity to the famous children's story The Little Engine That Could, even pausing to read a description of the story directly from Wikipedia's page. Robinson, in the words of one reporter "defiant as always and perhaps in a bit of denial", told the assembled press that in spite of his shortcomings at Syracuse, "I still think I can."
September 9th, 2013 at 5:03 PM ^
...and apparently Don and I share a braincell :)
September 9th, 2013 at 5:02 PM ^
With as much crap as GERG (deservedly) gets for the plush beaver, let's not forget that this is also the same guy who read 'The Little Engine That Could' while he was the head coach at Syracuse.
Sure that bit isn't really our cross to bear, but it's arguably a more embarrasing indictment on his utter ineptitude as any kind of coach anywhere.
September 9th, 2013 at 5:11 PM ^
IIRC, he went to Syracuse and followed GERG's Syracuse career closely. Maybe he's lurking and he can fill in the gory details.
September 9th, 2013 at 5:18 PM ^
I remember that. Just when one of his alma maters relieved itself of the Gerg millstone, his other one took it on. Poor guy...
September 9th, 2013 at 5:28 PM ^
Oh yes. I remember him warning us about GERG and getting negbanged over it. We didn't want to listen.
September 9th, 2013 at 5:06 PM ^
I still say that the best moment of that segment is watching Robinson awkwardly BS his way through this and respond to the question "What do you user this for?" as if he can't decide whether or not she's asking about Erik McMillan or the beaver in the noose.

Here's a guy who still has faith in Mack Brown:
Greg Robinson has two more Superbowl rings than any of us Both as DC of the Denver Broncos. I think the B.S. of bashing Robinson because he hitched his train to the Rich Rod Michigan disaster is unfair. This man spent 13 years as a DC in the NFL and won two Superbowls. He didn’t do well as a HC and he didn’t do well being micro-mismanaged by Rich Rod.
Our D against BYU had absolutely NO contain. Surely a man with 13 years as DL or DC in the NFL and 2 Superbowl Rings can help us.
Thank you GR for bailing us out. Signed, Desperate.by Wrangler86 on Sep 8, 2013 | 11:18 PM ↩reply
That's in reaction to a fairly gentle evaluation of the GERG by Zach Travis of Maize n Brew on the Texas SBNation sister site.
September 9th, 2013 at 5:33 PM ^
That article brought back a lot of disturbing memories. I couldn't make it any further than the shot of GERG on the sidelines, with Nick Sheridan nearby. (I know that's not fair to Sheridan; he tried his best. But I can never look at a photo of him in a Michigan uniform again.)
September 9th, 2013 at 6:15 PM ^
I don't think I've ever seen a guy's career summed up better than that. :D That's not a knock, I remember thinking exactly that while trying to reconcile my despair after those games.

until we dropped into the 100's on defensive ranking

I'm glad he's getting another oppurtinuty to redeem himself after that debacle here. But it looks like that staff is going to be wiped out after this year. Texas can't play second fiddle to A&M down there.

that RR had hired Robinson. I was in my car in the groceryl parking lot, and I just shouted "nooooooooooooooo!" at the radio. I was a RR supporter, but I knew then he'd just signed his Michigan coaching career death warrant with that decision.
