OT: So GERG's beaver goes back to his days in the NFL?

Submitted by iawolve on

Just typing that line is difficult. I have never seen this posted on this site, so apologies if it was up here long ago. Thanks to EDSBS for actually finding this video of a 1997 interview with GERG and some of his players about the beaver, it "being out" according to Romanowski and even one beaver hanging on a noose(!). You get about 30 seconds into this and the wheels will literally come off your brain because we hired this guy. I would suggest getting up and taking a short walk around to sort yourself out, it helped me.

Gerg's last job was at Michigan and he was really bad at coordinating the defense. He was quite good at providing soft coverage and giving up lots of yards and points.

Gerg was actually on their staff already as some kind of "analyst," which I guess helps to explain the move.

The fact that he was already on their staff really shows how much nepotism there is in this game.  Once you rise as high as coordinator, you'll basically never want for a job in the sport again.

In his final press conference as Syracuse coach, after the Orange had concluded a fourth straight losing campaign (3-9), Robinson likened his relentless positivity to the famous children's story The Little Engine That Could, even pausing to read a description of the story directly from Wikipedia's page. Robinson, in the words of one reporter "defiant as always and perhaps in a bit of denial", told the assembled press that in spite of his shortcomings at Syracuse, "I still think I can."

With as much crap as GERG (deservedly) gets for the plush beaver, let's not forget that this is also the same guy who read 'The Little Engine That Could' while he was the head coach at Syracuse.

Sure that bit isn't really our cross to bear, but it's arguably a more embarrasing indictment on his utter ineptitude as any kind of coach anywhere.

I still say that the best moment of that segment is watching Robinson awkwardly BS his way through this and respond to the question "What do you user this for?" as if he can't decide whether or not she's asking about Erik McMillan or the beaver in the noose.

Here's a guy who still has faith in Mack Brown:

Greg Robinson has two more Superbowl rings than any of us Both as DC of the Denver Broncos. I think the B.S. of bashing Robinson because he hitched his train to the Rich Rod Michigan disaster is unfair.

This man spent 13 years as a DC in the NFL and won two Superbowls. He didn’t do well as a HC and he didn’t do well being micro-mismanaged by Rich Rod.

Our D against BYU had absolutely NO contain. Surely a man with 13 years as DL or DC in the NFL and 2 Superbowl Rings can help us.
Thank you GR for bailing us out. Signed, Desperate.

That's in reaction to a fairly gentle evaluation of the GERG by Zach Travis of Maize n Brew on the Texas SBNation sister site.

That article brought back a lot of disturbing memories.  I couldn't  make it any further than the shot of GERG on the sidelines, with Nick Sheridan nearby.   (I know that's not fair to Sheridan; he tried his best.  But I can never look at a photo of him in a Michigan uniform again.)

I don't think I've ever seen a guy's career summed up better than that. :D  That's not a knock, I remember thinking exactly that while trying to reconcile my despair after those games.

I'll admit, I was excited about the GERG hiring. I thought UM was getting an NFL caliber D-coordinator, and I watched his Syracuse defense perform well against ND. I was wrong. Very wrong.

I'm glad he's getting another oppurtinuty to redeem himself after that debacle here.  But it looks like that staff is going to be wiped out after this year.  Texas can't play second fiddle to A&M down there.

D coordinator make a tackle or cover a WR will be a first. I think it's shameful what Mack Brown and Texas did by firing that guy. That's fricken horrible imo

that RR had hired Robinson. I was in my car in the groceryl parking lot, and I just shouted "nooooooooooooooo!" at the radio. I was a RR supporter, but I knew then he'd just signed his Michigan coaching career death warrant with that decision.

This will be an interesting experiment in how good GERG really is. Sure, he sucked ass at Michigan, but he has a decent chance at redeeming himself. I (and many others here) will be paying close attention to how the Texas defense performs.

Posted this in another thread, but maybe it warrants another life here:

GERG-le, GERG-le, new Lone Star?
Has Texas football slipped so far
That thinking that his coaching skills
Somehow would fix their Longhorns’ ills?

In Austin there’s just one believer
Who wanted GERG and his stuffed beaver
To run the Lomghorns’ new defenses,
But that man might’ve lost his senses.

At Michigan and Syracuse,
GERG’s defenses were coached to lose.
Did Texas like his silver mane
Or was their thinking just insane?

Texas football might come back,
But prob’ly not with GERG and Mack.
