OT- Ridiculous dress code in Oklahoma

This is exactly why us Texans call OK our toothless neighbors from the north.

I think maybe the Anti-Gang Task Force is confused about what a gang is
August 21st, 2012 at 12:50 PM ^
Some of the most vicious people I know are five years old.

You're not down with UofM homes? All you need to do is take a beating for 13 seconds and you're in ESE!

the teacher did not know the 5 year old's T-shirt was reversible and said, "Sooners Blow" when it was inside out.

OK, I can see the other side here. Seriously.
They have gang problems. They have a dress code intended to prevent gangs from subtly identifying themselves. You ban gang logos and gang colors... so maybe a gang could decide, hmm, we'll identify ourselves by ALL of us wearing the school colors of St. Mary's LIttle Sisters of the Poor (I think they are on Boise State's and TCU's schedule this year, btw). So to prevent that, the school district is going to ban all separately-identifiable garb that a gang might use to set themselves apart.
Of course, there really is only one logical solution here. The school needs to implement uniforms, and end any potential ambiguities. As long as you DONT have a dress code but DO ban a variety of clothing, you're going to get nonsensical and arbitrary results. Either you choose to live with that ("no Michigan shirt for a 5 year old"), or, you just go all the way to a full-up uniform.
My kids go to catholic school, and you have NO idea how GREAT it is to have uniforms. No choices to make. No kids looking better (or richer or cooler) than others; no kids feeling less cool or poorer. It's actally cheaper, too -- you don't need the variability of a large wardrobe. So takes all the stress (for kids and parents) out of wardrobe, reduces prices, and eliminates all of the problems the school is facing.
August 21st, 2012 at 1:04 PM ^
to use Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, the Oklahoma directional schools and whatnot, to show gang affiliation, though? It would make a bit more sense if they banned all college gear, just out of state stuff probably doesn't solve anything.
August 21st, 2012 at 2:34 PM ^
...it wouldn't be easy for gangsters to limit themselves to Oklahoma schools because there would be a lot of non-gangsters wearing those shirts in Oklahoma anyways. Way too much collateral damage in a shoot-out.
Kind of like when that student organization (I think it was an LGBT group) used to have a "jeans day", it was like, WTF? damn near everybody was wearing jeans on campus anyways.
August 21st, 2012 at 2:40 PM ^
5 year olds dude. 5 year olds.
August 21st, 2012 at 2:46 PM ^
but don't gangs effectively put a monopoly on pro-sports wear in some areas? I was under the impression that in the right (wrong) neighborhood in Chicago, Blackhawks, Bulls or Sox gear could all mean different affiliations and the general public pretty much stops wearing any of that gear.
August 21st, 2012 at 10:16 PM ^
Honestly I get the policy, but still think Brian's "someone has a stick up their ass about Texas" theory is more likely.
August 21st, 2012 at 2:25 PM ^
It's actally cheaper, too -- you don't need the variability of a large wardrobe. This becomes less true when they reach high school age (especially girls).
August 21st, 2012 at 3:36 PM ^
except the "No uniform days" where it becomes obvious who the haves and have nots are, trust me I still remain scarred from 6th grade :)
"eliminates all of the problems the school is facing."
All of them? Bit of a stretch there, guy.
August 21st, 2012 at 12:53 PM ^
We are a gang, a gang who happens to the world's largest alumni base, a higher academic ranking, more money than OSU can ever hope to suckle off the teat of T. Boone Pickens, and centered in the smartest city in America by degree achievement.
Maybe the school system should go focus on the fact their school system is poorly ranked (C rating) and stop trying to punish the kid who has goals beyond cooking in a meth in a trailer outside of Tulsa.

" Oklahoma City Public Schools only allow in-state college apparel to be worn." - from the article
Here it is actually, in their own handbook:
Page 21, item #6 under the section explaining prohibited items: "Clothing bearing the names or emblems of all professional and collegiate athletic teams (with the exception of Oklahoma colleges and universities)
I would say that this is a pretty ridiculous rule to have in a public school system regardless, and especially in one which probably has a fair number of transplants like Oklahoma City. That being said, many of the 26 major line items in this part of the code are pretty understandable (and probably related to the findings of the Task Force, I imagine). I have to wonder what would make the Anti-Gang Task Force simply not exclude all manner of identifying gear like this, rather than simply out-of-state items (or indeed, leave this rule intact, if it has been long-standing).
August 21st, 2012 at 1:26 PM ^
This would seem to exclude Thunder apparel as well. Most of the time these rules are in place and ignored until there is a problem, when they can conveniently be enforced (rather than having to rewrite the regs). It's a decent rule to have so long as you ignore it until you really need it, in this case, lol wut principal.

Never had any issues with wearing Michigan gear. This incident is probably tied to a teacher who takes his/her job a little to seriously. I doubt 99% of the teachers would care about what school gear you have on.
August 21st, 2012 at 2:07 PM ^
I graduated from Broken Arrow in 2000. Never had any issues either. Funny thing though in 97, there used to be gangs and one of them wore Michigan gear as their colors. My brother was in said gang, still make fun of him all of the time.

This is communist like shit. Honestly. This could be some kind of NCAA violation with kids who go to OU and Ok St because they are funneling them to those schools by not allowing kids to wear the shirts of the schools they like.
August 21st, 2012 at 1:29 PM ^
I went to private school and had to wear a uniform, blue pants, white shirt. If what you wear directs you to a school, I'd have gone to Penn State. It doesn't. Stop trying to find a violation in a situation that is stupid and nothing more.
August 21st, 2012 at 1:47 PM ^
Hmm. I think there is a difference between plain blue and white UNIFORMS and not allowing kids to wear apparel of any other college than the two Big 12 schools in the state.
Maybe I'm wrong though.
August 21st, 2012 at 1:59 PM ^
First, that's not true. They can wear apparel from Tulsa, SE Oklahoma State, etc.
Second, I think you're missing the point that what you wear does has no corrolation to where you decide to matriculate. Growing up in Michigan, I owned very little Michigan gear when I was younger since it was so common - but without a doubt I still knew I wanted to go to Michigan. I owned just as many (1) Fighting Illini, Vermont Catamounts, and University of Detroit tees that I'd wear outside of school and I never considered going to any of those institutions and wasn't even a fan of them, except for maybe UofD basketball in the Rashad Phillips era.

I used to rock a Clemson t-shirt that I absolutely loved and had no intention of going to Clemson. I went through a random college t-shirt phase in high school even though I was always a firm UM verbal commit. But I must say that I never had a Vermont Catamounts shirt...VERY JEALOUS.

Its true, several guys in my high school tought it was funny to wear South Carolona game "Cocks" hats, and as far as I know they do not like games with cocks at all.

I love how some people on that post are defending the Dress Code. Yes kudo's to you for "standing up" to gang violence outlawing anything non O.K. Because we all know the bangers are the only ones who love Miami ... right Nevin?

Great hidden agenda guys. Way to inspire and nurture young minds and teach them that it's OK to be who they want to be and no one can tell them otherwise.

Psssh. This kid is more than likely a top ranking official with the Maniac Latin Disciples. Kudos to the teacher for keeping this little scumbag in line.
Also, here are some helpful pointers in spotting these miscreants -
- Shaved, bald head or extremely short hair
- White oversized T-shirt creased in the middle
- White athletic type undershirt
- Polo type knit shirts (oversized) and usually worn buttoned to the top and not tucked in
- Oversized Dickie, Ben Davis or Solos pants
- Pants worn low, or "sagging" and cuffed inside at the bottom or dragging on the ground
- Baseball caps worn backwards (usually black and sometimes with the initials of the gang)
- Cut off under-the-knee, short pants worn with knee-high socks
- A predominance of dark or dull clothing, or clothing of one particular color
- Black oversized jackets, sweatshirts, jerseys, etc.
- Black stretch belt with chrome or silver gang initial belt buckle
- Oversized shirts
- Clothing a mixture of gang colors, black and silver or white
