OT: NFL Coaching Carousel, Black Sunday/Monday
Dolphins fired Adam Gase after 3 yrs. (NFL.com Coaching Tracker - also has section on coaching candidates)
Jets fired Todd Bowles after 4 yrs.
Broncos fired Vance Joseph after 2 yrs.
Bucs fired Dirk Koetter after 3 yrs.
Bengals fired Marvin Lewis after forever.
Cardinals fired Steve Wilks after 1 yr.
Falcons fired OC Steve Sarkisian, DC Marquand Manuel, and special teams coord Keith Armstrong. Coach Dan Quinn will take on DC role.
File under L for LOLWUT?
Raiders hired Mike Mayock as GM. "Gruden and the Raiders seem confident that Mayock's expertise as a media draft analyst will allow them to rebuild the team into a winner. ... It's Mayock's first job in an NFL front office."
'Cuz you really want a newbie GM to rebuild your team.
December 31st, 2018 at 4:49 PM ^
The Mayock hire is actually laughable.
December 31st, 2018 at 4:50 PM ^
Meh. Several posters on here recently indicated they could do a credible job coaching Michigan.
December 31st, 2018 at 4:52 PM ^
And if Mark Davis were in charge they would all get their shot.
December 31st, 2018 at 4:59 PM ^
So was the Gruden hire. Raiders have a ton of draft picks in the next few years but they basically have to hit big on a majority of them to be in good shape. Otherwise they might pick in the top 10 for 10 straight years under Grudens 10 year contract
December 31st, 2018 at 5:03 PM ^
They could always bundle the picks for a trade too. They could trade for... say... Khalil Mack or a WR like Amari Cooper.
Just sayin...
December 31st, 2018 at 6:11 PM ^
Maybe he gets a bonus for that.
December 31st, 2018 at 5:10 PM ^
How bad can it be? When’s the last time hiring a TV analyst as a first time GM failed miserably?
December 31st, 2018 at 5:12 PM ^
Being a GM for a NFL team is way more than being good at a mock draft.
December 31st, 2018 at 6:56 PM ^
Nice ... tip of the hat ...
January 1st, 2019 at 9:09 AM ^
I don't need to coach, just let me call the plays...
December 31st, 2018 at 4:50 PM ^
With the negative PR and general vibe the NFL has had around diversity - perhaps it would be better dubbed "Not Black Sunday/Monday"
https://theundefeated.com/features/future-of-black-nfl-coaches-a-concern-after-round-of-firings/
December 31st, 2018 at 5:04 PM ^
Diversity hires not working out... not shocking. Just need to hire the best men for the job.
December 31st, 2018 at 5:28 PM ^
Yeah, Anthony Lynn was terrible for the Chargers. If only they has hired a true up and comer like Matt Patrica instead.
December 31st, 2018 at 5:44 PM ^
But the term has nothing to do with race.
December 31st, 2018 at 6:42 PM ^
Steve Wilks' firing is absolute bullshit. Nobody could've been successful with that trash roster the Cardinals have. Dude was set up to fail with a rookie QB.
Vance Joseph also has no QB. Whose fault is that? Oh right Elway!
Those two deserve to keep their jobs.
December 31st, 2018 at 7:07 PM ^
Your HIGH! Wilkes and Joseph were horrible head coaches. Being a Bronco fan and watching him blunder game after game w horrible timeouts or lack there of, lack of leadership, he never challenged plays, even announcers piled on him week after week. Arizona offense was horrible as well and he hired Leftwich aegis OC so that there alone deserves a firing! Horrible head coaches and BOTH deserved to be fired.
December 31st, 2018 at 10:32 PM ^
The Cardinals roster is anything but trash. The entire OL got injured. They have great receivers, TE's and running backs and had a very good defense until they decided to change the philosophy from high pressure man to man defense to a very crappy zone.
I don't think Rosen is any good.
If anything, the GM should be fired for the hire.
December 31st, 2018 at 10:47 PM ^
“Great” receivers?? Are you having flashbacks to 2012?
January 1st, 2019 at 1:24 AM ^
No. Do you even know who the receivers are? It would seem not so stay out of it.
December 31st, 2018 at 4:57 PM ^
I don’t know if Joseph or Wilks deserved to be fired after such short tenures, but if you’re firing a coach that early, the people that hired him should be fired too. I wish the Lions would fire Patricia and Quinn. But unfortunately their careers are tied together so I feel like we are guaranteed at least two more seasons with them
December 31st, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
It doesn’t matter what the Lions do or don’t do as long as the Ford family owns the team.
December 31st, 2018 at 5:42 PM ^
Arizona should have fired that drunk bastard Keim. He's made some really stupid moves in the past year. Probably the real reason Arians left.
December 31st, 2018 at 4:57 PM ^
I am just here for the "they should hire Pep" jokes :D
December 31st, 2018 at 5:01 PM ^
Well, the NFL has a black HC problem now, so it's either Pep or Jim Caldwell.
December 31st, 2018 at 6:02 PM ^
Why not both?
December 31st, 2018 at 6:19 PM ^
Throw in Hue and we’re set.
January 1st, 2019 at 1:00 PM ^
What’s a “black HC problem”?
December 31st, 2018 at 4:57 PM ^
The Packers want to interview Pat Fucking Fitzgerald? I mean, OK, I guess? He just seems a little meat-head-y for the NFL, but what do I know??
December 31st, 2018 at 5:35 PM ^
Yeah, no. He’d fit right in.
December 31st, 2018 at 5:38 PM ^
I think the Packers President is a former NW AD
December 31st, 2018 at 5:43 PM ^
Yes, he's the one that made Fitz the coach after NW's coach died.
December 31st, 2018 at 6:12 PM ^
I got the impression the Packers think they should win the Super Bowl immediately. The wacky expectations make that a tricky job.
December 31st, 2018 at 6:45 PM ^
They have Aaron Rodgers. Not wacky expectations.
December 31st, 2018 at 7:44 PM ^
And there you are.
December 31st, 2018 at 5:05 PM ^
i like Maycock as an analyst, but isnt' there a ton of other duties that a GM needs to do beyond putting together a draft board?
seems like he could have been assistant GM in charge of scouting or something, and not the full on GM role?
Raiders...
December 31st, 2018 at 5:10 PM ^
This is Matt Millen 2.0.
December 31st, 2018 at 6:58 PM ^
You haven't factored in the key variable - the LIONS factor. Watch as this guy turns out to be amazing and drafts together a team that wins multiple Super Bowls. It is like the other end of the bell curve - he'll be the opposite of the Matt Millen experience.
December 31st, 2018 at 5:15 PM ^
That makes too much sense for the Raiders
December 31st, 2018 at 5:18 PM ^
It's baffling that someone without any front office experience would get hired as full GM. Especially since Matt Millen worked out so well.
December 31st, 2018 at 8:15 PM ^
Lynch is putting together some talent in SF. Raiders will just hire people to worry about the other issues like managing cap. Not saying it is a great hire but finding talent is still the most important part of the job.
December 31st, 2018 at 5:11 PM ^
Looks like the raiders are following the path of the D. Lions after hiring Millen. And didn't you get a chuckle out of Mrs.Ford as her Lions are on the right path?
December 31st, 2018 at 5:16 PM ^
Gruden is the real GM. Mayock is just his assistant.
December 31st, 2018 at 5:18 PM ^
Bengals fan here, should be fun watching the Brown family fuck up this coaching search. By fun I mean excruciating and nauseating all at Once.
December 31st, 2018 at 6:04 PM ^
It'll probably be Hue Jackson
December 31st, 2018 at 6:27 PM ^
Yep and my point will be made. 3-33 or whatever only to watch Greg Williams make the same team competitive does not give me an ounce of confidence in Hue. I mean Greg Williams ain’t exactly Vince Lombardi.....
December 31st, 2018 at 9:41 PM ^
Bengals fan here as well. If they hire Hue or Joseph, I will be done rooting for them as long as Brown is the owner. My top 4 choices would be L Riley, T Herman, E Bienemy and P Carmichael.
December 31st, 2018 at 8:17 PM ^
Brown will wait until all the other teams fill their vacancies. Then he can pay someone that nobody wants as little as possible.
December 31st, 2018 at 5:20 PM ^
Why not Mayock—look at the clowns currently running franchises.
December 31st, 2018 at 5:35 PM ^
As a Vikes fan, I'm interested to see if an innovative OC becomes available from the HC fires. Unfortunately, Zimmer probably isn't bringing in any flavor besides vanilla
December 31st, 2018 at 6:05 PM ^
Spielman and Zimmer should both be broomed.
