OT: Louisville DC Todd Grantham Turns Down Raiders

I'm surprised. Oakland is Oakland but I don't think of Louisville as a prestige program.

I guess TV money is leveling the playing field for coaching talent. Grantham made almost $1 million last season...at Louisville...crazy!

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to have interviewed for the defensive coordinator position with the Oakland Raiders, but I'm committed to the University of Louisville," Grantham said. "I said when I came to Louisville that I thought we could win a national championship, and we are building toward that goal with the success we had this season.

"they were not going to hire me so I made it look like I turned them down", I am sure a requisite bump in retention bonus will be deposited by Louisville Athletics Department into his bank account.

I think overall Louisville has probably done the best improvement to be at the big boy table over the past decade... they are competitive in nearly every sport and they host tons of NCAA events.. even if they do have to call their fancy digs the YUM! CENTER, or whatever. they are why cincinatti and UConn are still on the outside looking in. still hard to consider them a big time program to turn down an NFL job for.

speaking of wonderful campus buildings, every time we play OSU I cannot believe they play in value city arena.. they must have thought people would not notice and just call it the schott or whatever the complex is... half of me laughs at them for it and half of me is annoyed we have to play our rivalry with them there

Make fun of the raiders while you can. Franchise QB, 70 million dollars in cap room, and the number 4 pick in the draft. Tough schedule in 15' but watch out, they will be nasty again soon. Jack Del Rio is the de-facto DC anyways.

Oh and nfl.com and bill polish both said if the draft was done over again Derek Carr would be the first pick. Also I've studied QB's for 20 years and Derek has every single tool there is... Bill polish compared him to Aaron Rodgers in that he has a great arm and is quite fast. Derek Carr will be the next great QB in the nfl. Julius Thomas, long time raider fan said he would love to play with Carr. Every analyst that talks about him raves about him.

I love football. I've watched that team do everything but win a Super Bowl. I'm passionate about them because I love the sport. Michigan will always be my number one team. There is no doubt about that. But I do what to see the Lions win badly. Their inability to get over the hump like Seattle and others have done is immensely frustrating to me. I think this is true for most Lions fans.

If the Lions ever won a Super Bowl the party in Michigan would be unlike any this state has seen.

The ghost of Al Davis is still there and will ensure they screw this up.  This is sad because IMO the NFL is more fun.when the Raiders are good, but I can't shake the feeling they're going on a run of futility to match that of the Lions.

Shhhhhh... don't say "  don't think of Louisville as a prestige program" too loudly. Those arrogant Card fans seriously think their football program is bad ass. It's hilarious.

I think coaches are beginning to realize that the NFL is too cut throat. College football is cut throat enough, but you know, if you got a pretty good gig in college football at what I'd consider a pretty stable program in Louisville, you can build yourself a pretty nice career without having to worry so much about the year-to-year moving, instability, threat on your job, etc. You can actually build something and own something. And that may be a better path to a head coaching job anyway.

Maybe a few too many Papa John's Mushroom Pizzas:

was the $$$.  All of a sudden, the $$$ is there in college football.

Honestly, as far as I can see, the only real drawback to college coaching is the recruiting.  Other than that, it seems better in every way.  Given the amount of money in college these days, I'd rather be a coach at a power college program than an NFL coach.  You can almost certainly get better job security, and your efforts are going to translate to results on the field more readily than they will in the NFL, where the entire system is setup to push you towards mediocrity.

Honestly, I bet a decent number of coaches prefer recruiting and building their own roster. Sure, it's going to be far easier to do so at a Michigan or Ohio State than at a Marshall or EMU, but I have to think some see the extra work as worth it to get the guys you want. There's got to be some satisfaction in it being your team from top to bottom as well as avoiding dealing with NFL prima donnas
