OT: Les Miles: Drama queen?
According to Joe Schad:
Les Miles has pushed back his media availability an hour today
Does Les Miles just like a little drama, or could this Arkansas job be at least sort of real? And what would that mean if we play them in a bowl game? I've always liked his quirkiness, but could he be playing with the media? Or is the media just playing with us?
(Or am I just bored because work is slow today?)

Les wants his off season raise. If Arkansas can't get it for him, maybe next week we'll see rumors about him being our next OC. He'd never say no to Michigan.

Nobody tell Dave Brandon to cancel his yacht trip in Florida. He needs some time away from his cell phone and away from raising tons of cash. This one's in the bag.

Someone start the flight-tracker!
November 28th, 2012 at 3:43 PM ^
I can't even imagine the nightmare that Les Miles as OC would be. That and we'd be forced to put real grass down on the field.
November 28th, 2012 at 5:04 PM ^
You assume he wouldn't eat astroturf if the situation required it. I have greater faith in him...
November 28th, 2012 at 7:01 PM ^
Let's be fair here. He wouldn't eat Astroturf.
FieldTurf, on the other hand...
November 28th, 2012 at 3:48 PM ^
IIRC Miles contract states he must get $1 than the next guy in the SEC. So he doesn't need to flirt with Arkansas to get a raise.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:56 PM ^
I'm not sure about your logic there. The only way that part of his contract kicks in is if Auburn or Arkansas pays someone more than Les currently makes. However Les can up his own salary simply by demanding more not to leave. The $1 thing is a floor, not a ceiling.
November 28th, 2012 at 4:18 PM ^
I was wrong. His contract states that if he wins a National Championship he gets pulled to within $1000 of the top coach nationally.
I was assuming that he made Nick Saban $$$$ and how they hell would Arkansas justify paying him that.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:31 PM ^
You're bored because work is slow today.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:33 PM ^
I guarantee that Les Miles' agent planted that story with ESPN saying Arkansas offered him an exhorbant amount of money to put pressure on LSU for a raise. If you were an agent, wouldn't you do that? It's obviously working because everyone is talking about it.

Since Miles has ended all the suspense and renewed his "commitment" to LSU . . .
November 28th, 2012 at 4:21 PM ^
This thread is now moot - lets party!
November 28th, 2012 at 3:37 PM ^
I was watching Sportscenter last night after the IU / UNC game and they had some CLOWN on discussing the Les Miles "offer". It sounded like they were making a TON of assumptions and that it was very likely Miles didn't have an offer or had even spoken with Arkansas brass.
Maybe ESPN has it out for Miles - they sure do like to report a bunch of stuff regarding him that is untrue.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:38 PM ^
I'm sorry but for the mocking we do here Les Miles is my hero. He has managed to turn rumor and innuendo into yearly raises like no man before him. I wish I could float a story in my firm every year that company X was about to offer me a BIG, BIG contract and then have my boss panic and bump my salary out of fear of my possible departure.
Say what you will about Les but that dude can work the system for cash.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:44 PM ^
One of the business people in my company tried to do the same thing - he got an offer from a competing company and went to his managers and told them he wanted to stay but the money was making it hard to pass up the other offer. They told him "good luck with the new job." Hahaha.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:49 PM ^
If your co-worker did this without an actual offer, he has really big balls or is just really dumb.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:49 PM ^
But dont you see Profit....that's the genus that is Les. He NEVER does it himself. Imagine in your scenerio if you or someone else went to the manager and said "Person X just got a very big offer from company Y" and the manager decided to give a raise to stop the move.
Les never does his own dirty work. That's why he's a genius.
November 28th, 2012 at 4:02 PM ^
Agreed. I need to hire an agent!
November 28th, 2012 at 5:05 PM ^
Everyone talks about SEC defensive lines ad nauseum in this part of the country. The quality of the SEC defensive line talent pales in comparison with the quality of the SEC coaches' agent talent.
November 28th, 2012 at 5:52 PM ^
Les Miles is my favorite non-Michigan coach. I love that man. He's friggin hilarious.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:40 PM ^
There's some fairly entertaining stuff in here:

November 28th, 2012 at 3:41 PM ^
Something tells me that talk like this is exactly what Les and his agent want. The more publicity this gets, the more pressure LSU gets to give him a raise.
What can you do?
November 28th, 2012 at 3:41 PM ^
the Hogs are really offering the kind of money rumored, they may have just got themselves a damn strong football coach. For that kind of money I would not be surprised.
November 28th, 2012 at 7:22 PM ^
I am guessing that there is one broadcaster/coach who is very happy about the supposed Miles offer: Jon Gruden. When desperate AD's, presidents, and NFL GM's are getting into bidding wars for coaches, Chucky wins. Now, his agent can use $5 million a year as a starting point in negotiations, under the rational that "if Les Miles is worth $5 million, then Jon Gruden is worth $5 million.
I hope the Gruden family at least sends the Miles family a Christmas card this year if Chucky signs with someone like Tennessee.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:44 PM ^
It was a regularly scheduled press conference. He probably moved it back so that he can squash rumors that he's leaving for Our Kansas.
Also, Les Miles is a Michigan Man, not a drama queen.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:45 PM ^
Here we go . . .
November 28th, 2012 at 4:09 PM ^
I was trying to be funny but wasn't explicit enough. Because sometimes being a Michigan Man and a Drama Queen aren't mutually exclusive, get it? ha

Whatever trolling is I wasn't doing it. The hair on my hand is from a genetic condition.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:48 PM ^
If Les Miles is missing, it's because he's making a sacrifice to the Cajun voodoo spirit that guides him through his game day decisions.
November 28th, 2012 at 4:02 PM ^
Whew. For a second there I was worried Les Miles might leave LSU.

"Rich Rodriguez to Auburn." Now if you will please excuse Coach Miles, he has a damn fine football team to coach.

November 28th, 2012 at 4:16 PM ^
If AZ had beaten ASU, I could actually envision some Auburn people bringing up RR as a candidate. Trouble is, RR doesn't have a very good record in rivalry games recently.
I really hope RR stays in Tucson for a few years. It's a good spot for him—low expectations and a bunch of programs that he ought to be able to compete with on a regular basis. If he can manage victories against ASU more often than not, they'll love him.
November 28th, 2012 at 5:54 PM ^
Solid recruiting base too. He can dip into California and Texas for kids that get overlooked by USC, Texas, OU, and OSU. AZ produces some okay talent as well. I think Sam Montgomery was from AZ and we've gotten some not so shabby guys from there IIRC.
November 28th, 2012 at 8:25 PM ^
is probably to go "all in" on Arizona. If he can get the Wildcats to the Rose Bowl and/or have them highly ranked for a few seasons, he'll get another shot at a top tier school. A job like Auburn would be better than Arizona today, but I'd assume that long-term he can find a better gig than an SEC West school playing second fiddle in its own state.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:52 PM ^
...Miles turned the Arkansas offer into an LSU extension.
@dennisdoddcbs Just what I thought. Someone was going to profit from Ark offer. LMiles signs extension. Well earned, Lesticles, and well played.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:54 PM ^
Seriously, how many times can you play that card?
November 28th, 2012 at 4:01 PM ^

I do like how Joe Alleva (LSU athletic director) put this in the Sporting News write-up -
"“Our intent was to address his contract following this year’s bowl game, but speculation about other job opportunities accelerated our process a little,"
Alleva also mentioned that Les was in line for a raise anyway, noting that he has not received a raise in his $3.75 million salary since 2007. At least we know that he is trying to keep up with inflation, if nothing else.
