OT: Late Night Horror
I just finished watching a Dutch thriller from 1988 entitled Spoorloos, or The Vanishing as it's known here in the States.
It's an exceptional film, and I highly recommend it for anyone desiring something in the horror category that doesn't confine itself to genre stereotypes.
Next on my list is Roman Polanski's The Tenant.
Share with us some underrated horror titles that you've come across!
I don't like Horrors...the first game of the 2007 season still haunts me to this day.
The Wicker Man from 1973. The remake is a work of comedic genius, but the original is an absolute masterpiece. If you can find a copy to rent, do it.
"Children shouln't play with dead things" is a good one.
Night of the Living Dead is pure genius, and the original The Haunting from the 60s.
The original is excellent. I actually just watched the remake from 1991 a couple days ago and was pleasantly surprised. It stays fairly faithful to the original, the main change is updating the lady character to make her respectable instead of a total ditz. And the ending is different.
There were some flaws of course but overall I'd say it's a far better remake than the remakes of Dawn of the Dead or Day of the Dead.
The only flaw IMO is the lack of gore as well as the lack of old, decaying zombies. Too many freshies. Other than that it's great. I love the atmosphere as well.
Indy horror film that starts out kinda slow, but is totally worth watching. Can't say anymore lest I give something away. "Session 9" is another really good low-budget horror flick.
Avoid the movie "Old Boy" like it is the plague dipped in herpes and glass shards.
Clarification:
Avoid the movie "Old Boy" like it is the plague dipped in herpes and glass shards.
Avoid it because why? I loved that whole Park Chan-wook vengeance trilogy, including Lady Vengeance and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. I thought Oldboy was the best of the three, FWIW.
I agree with you that Oldboy was pretty amazing. I can also understand people not liking it. It was super intense. It had a lot of graphic content and plot points that might make someone sick.
I will always remember the scene in the sushi bar though. That was insane!
Actually, I am going to watch Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. Only 3 short years after seeing Oldboy. It will probably take me another 3 years to recover enough to finish the trilogy.
I was initially horrified by your avatar, but I've come to find it quite amusing.
The Tenant is creepy but not especially great. The worst of the apartment trilogy.
Those furry little bastards singing gives me the chills everytime. I am still too traumatized to check out the squeakquel.
The fourth kind is underrated imo! That movie made me believe in aliens...and creeped me out
Have you ever watched Ancient Aliens on the History Channel? That has more compelling alien evidence than The Fourth Kind did.... just throwin' it out there if you're interested in that.
Also, Fourth Kind was a very good movie.
That's the same exact way I described it to my fiance yesterday when she was bitching about it being on. I said "come on, you don't think any of this is compelling?" Good call, great show...As far as alien/UFO movies go, nothing beats "Fire in the Sky." That movie will scar you for life.
As far as underrated I would go with Identity as one of my favorites.
First and last horror movie i saw in the theater, scared the piss out of me and made me sleep with a light on for months.
I have to say the new Halloween II by Rob Zombie was very scary in theatre. Lots of moments to make you jump.
Direct quote from me to my girlfriend in the theatre watching this movie: "I can't handle this!" Rob Zombie did an awesome job on it.
High Tension (2003) A nice gory lil' horror flick with a descent plot twist.
Agreed, solid movie/plot twist. They dropped subtle hints through out the movie that there was something wrong with the main character.
Ugh, one of the many bad girly movies I was dragged to in New Jersey. We had cable vision and one of their promotions was free movies for all cable vision subscribers at clearview cinemas on Tuesdays. So if there wasn't anything decent we both wanted to see, she would convince me to come with her to movies such as Bride Wars, Confessions of a Shopaholic, some movie about a girl with a pig face, and Enchanted (which I actually enjoyed and Amy Adams is hot).
Near Dark (1987) - one of my all-time horror faves...featuring Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton. Joe Bob Briggs says check it out!
Condorman.
Probably not underrated but to me the gold standard scare flick has always been Poltergeist. I guess it depends on what pushes your particular buttons. In that vein I would add Amityville Horror.
The Descent is one of my all time favorites. They recently made a straight to dvd sequel, I read about it some, and it doesn't even make sense given the ending of the first movie.
as one of the scariest movies I have ever seen.
The second one still creeps me out to this day. The original ones, not the Julia Stiles remake, although she is incredibly HOT!!!
Suspiria is great one to check out. It might not always make sense, but it's a ton of fun and one of the crazier movies you'll see.
Anyone seen Audition? I've heard its really scary/messed up, but no movie stores carry it around town.
Watched it on Netflix. It was good, a little slow at first. One of the final scenes was really difficult to watch, I don't think I've ever been so uncomfortable watching a movie
Will MESS you up!
And tell me you can't see his attraction to her....before she starts to....
Let the Right One In (the original: foreign/ not sure if they did a shitty remake in US)
One of the best I have seen in a while.
That's the one I was going to post. I've only seen the foreign version, but it's terrifying and well worth spending the time on.
I'm glad you correctly labeled this OT. At first glance I thought this was an announcement that we were going to be playing a rematch vs. ASU in a night game in 2012.
I think I've been spending too much time on this site.
Sleepaway Camp!!!
not intentionally scary clowns, but clowns in general
Clowns are evil. Anything with a smile painted on its face cannot be trusted.
A clown killed my dad.
Rosemary's Baby is a good one.
Appalachin State VS.... I can't even say it I get so scared thinking about it.
I don't think I've ever seen a Stephen King movie that I didn't like. "Pet Sematary" is one of my favorites. More recently, "The Mist" is a great one. Oh yeah, "The Shining" is pretty good too.
Didn't that get remade into a horrible piece of crap with Keifer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock?
Loved the original, despised the remake with the fury of 1,000 suns if that's the one I'm thinking of. Someone mentioned "Audition" above...extremely skin-crawly creepy movie. If you like Japanese horror films (and what's WRONG with you?? if you don't), the orignal Ju-On and Dark Water are both good.

Is the best comedy/horror film of all time. Best zombie deaths (aside from zombieland) ever. The lawnmower scene is priceless.
Zombi II- Lucio Fulci's masterpiece, far superior to Romero's "Dawn."
Also, the box cover photo makes for a sweet avatar.
And you can't convince me it doesn't have the greatest theme song ever composed.
"We are going to eat you!"
But I read about it, and this may be the most disturbing crap man has ever come up with. I won't even embed the video. Just the link, if you dare. Don't watch or research if you're easily disturbed. Or just had lunch.
The Human Centipede-
